MADISON, S.D. – Trailing 3-1 in the bottom eighth inning Wednesday afternoon at Flynn Field, Dakota State (S.D.) mounted a comeback with two run scored to tie the game at 3-3 with Briar Cliff (Iowa).  After each team scored a run in the 10th inning, the Chargers added a run in the top 11th frame and held off the Trojans by the score of 5-4.

Dakota State, who is currently playing their seventh straight home game in the current 13-game home stand, fell to 7-23 overall record.  Briar Cliff, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 17-11-1 overall record.

The Trojans halted Briar Cliff's scoring chances in the second and third innings, despite leaving bases full.

DSU would take the first lead of the game in the bottom third frame.  Jake Bonin reached on base after BCU committed a defensive error with one out.  The Trojans produced a hit-and-run play as Tyler Ratkie hit a single through the second base's hole, advancing Bonin to third base.  Jordan Entrikin recorded an RBI ground out to score Bonin as DSU gained a 1-0 advantage.

Briar Cliff ended their scoring drought after scoring three runs in the top sixth inning, overtaking the lead from the Trojans.  Darrell Wilson hit a single with one out.  Chase Hernandez recorded an RBI double to score Wilson as the Chargers tied the game at 1-1.

After BCU Braden Amenta reached on base by DSU's defensive miscue in the top sixth frame (Hernandez advanced to third), Alex Colegrove hit an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Hernandez as the Chargers grabbed a 2-1 lead.  Briar Cliff added another run for a 3-1 lead after Brody Pitkin hit an RBI double to score Amenta.

Dakota State mounted a rally in the bottom eighth inning.  Richard Sternberg led off the bottom eighth and reached safely on first base after the Chargers' committed an error.  He advanced to second base after a wild pitch by BCU's Matt Wesselmann. 

With two outs, Ratkie blasted an RBI double to score Sternberg to cut BCU's lead to 3-2 in the bottom eighth.  After a pitching change for the Chargers, Entrikin added an RBI single to score Ratkie and knotted the game at 3-3.

The Chargers left one runner on base, while the Trojans went three-and-out in the ninth inning.  As the result, the game was extended into extra innings.

Briar Cliff regained their lead in the top 10th inning with one run score.  Wilson was hit-by-pitch with one out.  He advanced to second after a wild pitch by DSU's Jordan Lerdal.  A balk was called on DSU, advancing Wilson to third base.  Amenta recorded an RBI ground out to score Wilson for a 4-3 BCU lead.

The Trojans answered back with a run scored in the bottom 10th frame.  Sternberg led off with a single.  Ryan Schlesser hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Sternberg to second base.  Sternberg advanced to third base by a wild pitch by Charger Jeraldo Montejano.

JD Farley – pinch hitter for Bonin – was reached safely on first by a walk, but Sternberg scored after another wild pitch by Montejano as the Trojans tied the game at 4-4.

The Chargers ended the tenth inning with a double play.

Briar Cliff added a run in the top 11th inning to earn a 5-4 lead.  Montejano led off with a single.  Joshua Penrod hit a ground out and advanced Montejano to second base.  Maurice Handcox, Jr. recorded a single and allowed Montejano reached safely on third base.

BCU set up a bases loaded situation with one out after Scott Morton was hit-by-pitch in the top 11th.  Jake Erichsen hit a sacrifice bunt to score Montejano as the Chargers regained a one-run lead.

The Trojans were unable to make a comeback in the bottom 11th inning as Jake Harris hit a single, followed by Jamie Jorgensen's walk with one out.  BCU sealed the game after DSU left two runners on base.

Ratkie was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI for Dakota State.  Entrikin added a single and two RBIs.  Harris, Nick Serrata and Sternberg each had a hit.  Sternberg scored twice in the game.  Ratkie and Bonin each had a run.  Jorgensen, Dylan Deckert and Farley each reached on base-on-balls once.

Pitkin and Hernandez each had a double and an RBI for Briar Cliff.  Penrod had two hits.  Handcox, Jr., Erichsen, Amenta and Montejano each recorded a single.  Erichsen, Amenta and Alex Colegrove each had an RBI.

BCU outhit DSU 10-7 in the game.  The Chargers left 12 runners on base, while DSU had 5 runners left on base.

Mitch Bouchard started the game on the pitching mount for the Trojans.  He worked for two scoreless innings and gave up two hits.  Taylor Boerger tossed four innings in relief.  He allowed three runs (two unearned) on six hits.  Lerdal pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up one unearned run.  He recorded three strikeouts.  Bryant Westra (1-3) took the loss after tossing 1 2/3 innings.  He allowed one run on two hits.

Wesselmann pitched for 7 2/3 innings on the pitching mound for the Chargers.  He allowed three unearned runs on four hits.  Jon Muller pitched the final out in the bottom eighth inning after giving up a hit.  Jory Boynton tossed a shutout ninth inning.  Montejano (1-0) earned the victory after pitching two innings.  He gave up one run on two hits.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return back to North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference action Friday and Saturday.  The Trojans continue their home stand as they host Dickinson State (N.D.) in a four-game series.  The doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. Friday and 12 noon on Saturday at Flynn Field.
