MADISON, S.D. – Dickinson State (N.D.) held on for a 3-2 victory in the third game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) baseball series over Dakota State (S.D.) at Flynn Field.  The Trojans bounced back in the final game of series by taking advantage of Blue Hawks' six defensive errors for a 9-1 win, earning a four-game series split.

Dakota State is 9-25 overall record, while Dickinson State is 12-17 overall record.  Both teams are 4-4 record in the NSAA standings and are in a four-way tie for second place with Jamestown (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.).

Game 1:  Dickinson State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

The Blue Hawks scored a run in the first three innings of the game and held off the Trojans in a thriller.

Landon Briscoe led off the game with a single for DiSU.  Dylan Skabo recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Briscoe to second base.  Jordan Tescher hit an RBI single to score Briscoe for a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.

Dickinson State added another run in the top second frame after Ryan Mitchell's RBI double for a 2-0 lead.

Brady Wauer blasted his first career collegiate home run to lead off the bottom second inning as Dakota State trimmed Blue Hawks' lead to 2-1.  After JD Farley reached safely by a fielder's choice, Tyler Ratkie hit a double to advance Farley to second base. 

Jake Harris produced an RBI single to score Farley as the Trojans answered back with two runs in the bottom second frame, tying the game at 2-2.

The Blue Hawks scored once in the top third frame to overtake a 3-2 lead.  Tescher hit a double with one out and advanced to third after Eric Seiler recorded a fly out.  Jacob Hignite hit an RBI single to score Tescher for DiSU's one-run lead.

Dakota State looked to mount a comeback in the bottom seventh inning.  Harris and Jordan Entrikin recorded back-to-back base-on-balls with one out.  With Jamie Jorgensen at-bat for the Trojans, the Blue Hawks were able to end the game by a double play.

Harris was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for DaSU.  Wauer added a home run and an RBI.  Ratkie had a double.  Jorgensen and Richard Sternberg each had a hit.  Tony Poncia, Harris, Entrikin and Travis Fleming each reached on base by a walk.  Jorgensen swiped one base.

Tescher had a double, single and recorded an RBI for DiSU.  Mitchell added a double and an RBI.  Hignite had a hit and an RBI.  Briscoe, Jeff VanCleave and Ryan Risse each had a single. 

Dickinson State had seven hits in the game compared to Dakota State six hits.  The Trojans left nine runners, while the Blue Hawks had four runners left on base.

Bryant Westra (1-4) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans, despite retiring 12 of the last 13 Blue Hawks' batters.  He tossed seven innings gave up three runs on seven hits.  Westra recorded six strikeouts.

Taylor Pogroszewski (2-2) earned the victory for the Blue Hawks.  He worked for 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits.  Chas Allen pitched the last out of the sixth inning in relief.  Josh Schuller (S, 1) earned his first save of the season after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.  He gave up two walks.

Game 1:  Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Dickinson State (N.D.) 1 – FINAL

The Trojans took advantage of six defensive errors by the Blue Hawks in the final game of the four-game series.  The Blue Hawks committed three defensive errors in the first and third innings to allow Dakota State race to an 8-1 lead.

Dickinson State grabbed the first lead of the game in the opening inning.  Tescher hit a single with two outs.  Seiler added a single and advanced Tescher to third base after Trojans' defensive error.  Hignite hit an RBI double to score Tescher to give DiSU a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans exploded for four runs in the bottom first inning.  Ratkie led off with a walk.  Poncia was hit-by-pitch to advance to second base.  Jorgensen reached safely on first base after DiSU's defensive error and allowed Ratkie to score, knotting the game at 1-1.

Dakota State made it 2-1 after Entrikin hit an RBI single to score Poncia in the bottom first.  On the same play, the Blue Hawks committed another defensive error to allow Jorgensen to score to put Trojans up 3-1 (Entrikin advanced to second base).

Also in the bottom first inning, Sternberg hit a single and advanced Entrikin to third base.  Jon Forster reached safely on fielder's choice with two outs, but the Blue Hawks recorded their third defensive error after dropping the ball on second base where Danny Lopiparo – courtesy runner for Sternberg – reached safely.  The Trojans led 4-1 by the end of the first inning.

Entrikin added an RBI single to score Poncia, who had a single and swiped to second base, in the bottom second inning as DaSU's lead grew to 5-1.

The Trojans scored three more times in the bottom third frame.  Ryan Schlesser recorded base-on-balls with one out.  Forster reached safely on DiSU's defensive miscue and advanced Lopiparo (courtesy runner for Schlesser) to second base.  Ratkie reached first base after a defensive error by the Blue Hawks and allowed Lopiparo to score to expand Trojans' lead to 6-1.

After Ratkie swiped to second base in the bottom third inning, Poncia produced a 2-RBI single to score Forster and Ratkie to make it 8-1 in favor of the Trojans.

Dakota State recorded two doubles by Ratkie and Entrikin in the bottom sixth inning.  Entrikin collected an RBI to score Ratkie for 9-1 DaSU's lead.

The Blue Hawks went three-and-out in the final inning as Dakota State secured the victory.

Entrikin was 3-of-4 at the plate with a double, two singles and tallied three RBIs for the Trojans.  Poncia added two singles and two RBIs.  Ratkie had a double and scored three times.  Sternberg recorded a hit.  Ratkie and Poncia each recorded a stolen base.

Hignite had a double and an RBI for the Blue Hawks.  Tescher and Seiler each had a single.

Dakota State had seven hits in the game compared to Dickinson State three hits.  The Blue Hawks' three hits all came in the first inning.

DiSU committed a total of six defensive errors in the game.  DaSU had two defensive errors.

The Trojans left six runners on base, while the Blue Hawks had three runners left on base.

Sternberg (3-3) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State.  He retired 19 of the last 20 DiSU's batters in the game after giving up a run and three hits in the first inning.

Seiler (3-5) recorded the loss for Dickinson State.  He pitched four innings and allowed eight runs (six unearned) on five hits.  He struck out five Trojans' batters.  Andrew Sampsel worked for two innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits.

Dakota State conclude their 13-game home stand Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader versus the University of Winnipeg (Manitoba).  The first game is set for 1 p.m. at Flynn Field.  Dickinson State will play a non-conference doubleheader on Monday at Jamestown (N.D.).
