JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.) split the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Jack Brown Stadium.  The Trojans roared to a 5-0 lead in the first game and never looked back for a 9-4 victory.  The Jimmies closed out the four-game series after holding off DSU's late comeback for a 10-5 win.

Dakota State is 10-29 overall record and 5-7 NSAA conference record.  Jamestown is 17-15 overall record and 6-5 NSAA.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Jamestown (N.D.) 4 – FINAL

DSU's offensive outburst began in the opening inning of the first game, plating five runs.  Ian Barker kicked off the game with a double.  Tony Poncia hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Barker to second base.  Jake Harris was hit-by-pitch.

Jordan Entrikin hit an RBI single to score Barker for Trojans' first lead of the game at 1-0 in the top first.  Jamie Jorgensen added a single and advance Entrikin to third base and Harris to second base.  Richard Sternberg was hit-by-pitch, earning an RBI to score Harris for a 2-0 DSU lead.

A passed ball committed by the Jimmies allowed DSU's Entrikin to score for a 3-0 lead in the first inning (Jorgensen and Sternberg each advanced one base).  Ryan Schlesser added a 2-RBI single to score Jorgensen and Sternberg to extend Dakota State's lead to 5-0.

Jamestown answered back with a run scored in the bottom first inning.  After recording the first two outs for the Jimmies, UJ hit three straight singles by Paul Sitkowski, Landon Uetz and Tyler Ludlow.  Ludlow hit an RBI single to score Sitkowski as the Jimmies trimmed DSU's lead to 5-1.

Erik Peterson recorded an RBI single as Jamestown reduced their deficit to 5-2 in the bottom third.

The Trojans responded back with three runs in the top fourth inning as their lead grew to 8-2.  Schlesser and Tyler Ratkie led off with back-to-back singles.  Barker was reached on base by a walk, setting up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Harris produced a 2-RBI single to score Danny Lopiparo (courtesy runner for Schlesser) and Ratkie to give the Trojans a five-run lead at 7-2 in the top fourth.  A wild pitch committed by UJ's Nick Torres allowed Barker to score for a six-run lead.

Dakota State added a run in the top sixth inning.  Poncia led off with a single and swiped to second base with one out.  Harris hit an RBI single to score Poncia for 9-2 Trojans lead.

Kory Wolden hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom sixth inning as the Jimmies' cut DSU's lead to 9-4.

The Trojans secured the victory as UJ left two runners on base in the final inning.

Harris was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and three RBIs.  Barker and Sternberg each added a double.  Schlesser collected two singles and two RBIs.  Poncia, Entrikin, Nick Serrata and Ratkie each had a hit.  Poncia recorded a stolen base.

Wolden was 3-of-5 at the plate for the Jimmies with three singles and two RBIs.  Peterson added three hits and an RBI.  Ludlow, Sitkowski and Lance Ibesate each had two singles.

UJ had 14 hits in the game compared to DSU 13 hits.  The Jimmies left 12 runners on base while the Trojans had six runners left on base.

Garrison Collier (3-1) earned the victory on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He worked for five-plus innings and allowed four runs on 12 hits.  Taylor Boerger pitched for one out in the bottom sixth inning, while Jordan Lerdal finished off the sixth inning with the final two outs.  Sternberg pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Scott Beever (1-5) recorded the loss after pitching 2/3 innings.  He gave up five runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Julien Garica worked for 2 2/3innings in relief, allowing three runs on four hits.  Torries pitched for two innings and allowed one run on two hits.  Jeremy McPhee pitched for one out in the top seventh inning.  Travis Crumb tossed 1 2/3 innings and gave up two hits.

Game 2 – Jamestown (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

Jamestown raced to a 7-0 lead and held off the Trojans' late comeback in the final inning, earning UJ's third victory over the Trojans in the NSAA conference four-game series.

After setting up a bases loaded situation to kick off the bottom first inning (Wolden reached on base by a walk; Ibesate added a double to advance Wolden to third and Sitkowski was reached on base by a walk), UJ's Landon Uetz exploded for a grand slam to grab a 4-0 lead over the Trojans.

Ludlow hit a 2-run home run to extend Jimmies' lead to 6-0 in the bottom third inning (Uetz led off the inning with a single for UJ).  After Travis Crumb hit a double and advanced to third base by Marcus Blackmon, Jr.'s sacrifice bunt, the Trojans committed a passed ball to allow Crumb to score for a seven-run lead.

The Trojans ended their scoreless drought with a run scored in the top fourth inning.  Harris and Entrikin hit back-to-back singles.  Harris advanced to third base after Sternberg's fielder's choice (Entrikin out at second base).  Brady Wauer recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Harris as DSU cut their deficit to 7-1.

UJ made it 10-1 in the bottom fourth inning with three runs scored.  Wolden was hit-by-pitch, followed by Ibesate's single.  Sitkowski hit a 2-RBI single to score Wolden and Ibesate for an eight-run lead.  Uetz added an RBI single to score Siktowski to extend Jimmies' lead to nine runs.

Dakota State put together a three-run offense production in the top fifth inning.  JD Farley was hit-by-pitch with one out and advanced to second base after Barker's single.  Poncia hit a ground out to advance Farley to third and David Novak – pinch runner for barker – to second base. 

Harris recorded a 2-RBI single to score Farley and Novak as Dakota State cut UJ's lead to 10-3.  Entrikin added a single, advancing Harris to third base.  On the same play, Jamestown committed a defensive error to allow Harris to score as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 10-4.

DSU mounted a comeback in the top seventh inning.  Farley led off with a single.  A wild pitch by UJ's Dylan Deavy allowed to advance Farley to second base.  After the first two outs were recorded in the seventh inning, Entrikin was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State.

Travis Fleming was hit-by-pitch and earned an RBI to score Farley as the Trojans trimmed Jimmies' lead to 10-5.  The Jimmies secured the victory by a fly out, leaving three runners on base for DSU.

Harris was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and two RBIs for Dakota State.  Entrikin added two singles.  Barker, Wauer and Farley each had a hit.

Uetz was 3-of-3 at the plate with a grand slam home run, two singles and collected five RBIs for Jamestown.  Ibesate added a double and two singles.  Ludlow had a home run and two RBIs.  Crumb had a double.

The Jimmies had nine hits in the game compared to the Trojans seven hits.  UJ committed four defensive errors while DSU had one defensive miscue. 

DSU left seven runners on base while UJ had three runners left on base.

Jorgensen (0-4) picked up the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.  Luke Gassman worked for 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on three hits.  Connor Nagel pitched two shutout innings in relief.

Logan Lund (2-1) earned the victory as he pitched six innings for Jamestown.  He gave up four runs on six hits.  He recorded seven strikeouts.  Deavy worked for two outs in the top seventh inning, allowing a run on one hit.  Ryan Sheeley (S, 2) earned his second save as he recorded the final out of the game in relief.

Dakota State steps aside their NSAA conference play as they play a nine-inning game at NCAA Division I South Dakota State.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Erv Huether Field in Brookings, S.D.
