MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned back to the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference action Friday afternoon, visiting Mayville State (N.D.) for the four-game series at Scott Berry Field.  The Comets stormed to a 9-0 lead in the first game, cruising to a 9-3 victory.  The Trojans had a pair of solo home runs in the second game, but fell short in a nine-inning game to the Comets by the score of 3-2.

Dakota State, who is currently on a 13-game road trip, fell to 10-32 overall record and 5-9 NSAA conference action.  Mayville State won their eighth straight game to improve their overall record to 28-15 and 11-3 NSAA.

Game 1 – Mayville State (N.D.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

The Comets used a pair of big innings for a 9-0 lead.  The Trojans could not make a comeback after scoring at least a run in the final two innings, securing the first game of the four-game series for Mayville State.

With bases loaded with one out in the bottom second, the Comets earned their first lead of the game at 1-0 after Mason Swegarden's RBI walk.  Zach Mihic followed with a grand slam to extend MSU's lead to 5-0.

Mayville State added four runs in the bottom fifth inning as their lead grew to 9-0.  The Comets recorded six singles in the inning by Aaron Miller, Nate Williams, Swegarden, Mihic, Spencer Mallonee and John Pistulka.

Dakota State got on board in the top sixth with two runs scored.  Jordan Entrikin hit a single.  Jamie Jorgensen was hit-by-pitch to advance Entrikin to second base.  Nick Serrata reached on base by MSU's defensive error to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.

Tyler Ratkie hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Entrikin for DSU's first run of the game in the top sixth frame.  The Trojans added another run scored by Jorgensen after Ryan Schlesser reached safely on base by Comets' error, cutting DSU's deficit to 9-2.

JD Farley led off the top seventh inning with a walk for the Trojans.  Jake Harris added a single to advance Farley to third base.  Entrikin produced an RBI single to score Farley, but the Comets ended the game with a double play.

Harris and Entrikin each were 2-for-4 at the plate for Dakota State.  Ratkie added a hit.  Entrikin and Ratkie each had an RBI.  Ratkie, Brady Wauer and Farley reached on base by a walk.

Mihic had a home run, two singles and collected five RBIs for Mayville State.  Mallonee and Williams each added two hits.  Pistulka, Miller, Preston Kath and Swegarden each recorded a single.  Swegarden had two RBIs. 

MSU outhit DSU 11-5 in the game.  The Comets left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans' seven runners left on base.

Zac Smith (0-6) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits.  Luke Gassman worked for 1/3 inning, giving up two runs on three hits.  David Novak pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

Tyler Leibert (6-0) earned a complete game victory for Mayville State.  He allowed three runs (two unearned) on five hits.

Game 2 – Mayville State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

The second game of the four-game series featured a pair of pitchers between DSU's Garrison Collier and MSU's Aaron Dick tossing a complete game.

The Trojans grabbed the first lead of the game after Ian Barker slammed a solo home run in the top second frame, holding a 1-0 lead.

Mayville State answered back with two runs scored in the bottom third frame.  Jalen Hashbarger led off with a single.  Swegarden hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Hashbarger to second base.  Mallonee hit a single, advancing Hashbarger to third and then scored caused by DSU's defensive miscue to knot the game at 1-1.

Pistulka added an RBI double to score Mallonee as MSU overtook the lead from the Trojans at 2-1 in the bottom third.

Both teams were unable to score from the fourth through seventh innings.

The Comets made it 3-1 after Pistulka recorded a solo home run to lead off the bottom eighth.

Harris blasted a solo home run in the top ninth inning as DSU cut MSU's lead to 3-2.  The Comets secured the game after closing the game with a strikeout.

Barker was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, single and produced an RBI for Dakota State.  Harris added a home run and an RBI.  Ratkie, Entrikin and Farley each had a single.

Pistulka had a home run, double and earned two RBIs for Mayville State.  Mihic and Hasbarger each added two hits.  Christian Berry had a double.  Mallonee recorded a single.

MSU had eight hits compared to DSU six hits in the game.  The Comets left six runners on base while the Trojans left two runners on base.

Collier (3-2) recorded the loss on the pitching mound after working for eight innings for DSU.  He allowed three runs on eight hits.  Collier recoded six strikeouts.

Dick (4-2) collected the victory as he pitched nine innings.  He gave up two runs on six hits.

Dakota State and Mayville State conclude their four-game series Saturday at 12 noon.  The NSAA conference doubleheader takes place at Scott Berry Field in Mayville, N.D.
