MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to hold on to their 3-1 lead in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference baseball action versus Mayville State (N.D.) at Scott Berry Field Saturday afternoon.  The Comets rallied back with a walk-off home run in the bottom seventh inning for a 4-3 victory.  Trailing 3-0 in the final game of the four-game series, the Trojans stormed back and defeated MSU 7-3.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 11-33 and 6-10 NSAA conference record.  Mayville State is 29-16 and 12-4 NSAA record and currently holds first-place in the NSAA Baseball standings.  The Comets' nine-game winning streak was snapped in the second game today.

Game 1:  Mayville State (N.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

Zach Mihic led off with a double for the Comets in the bottom first inning.  John Pistulka produced an RBI single to score Brandon Weber – courtesy runner for Mihic – as Mayville State grabbed the first lead of the game at 1-0.

Dakota State exploded for three runs in the top third frame, thanks to four consecutive hits after recording two outs.  Tyler Ratkie and Nick Serrata hit back-to-back singles.  Jake Harris blasted a 2-RBI double to score Ratkie and Serrata as DSU take a 2-1 lead. 

Dakota State made it 3-1 after Jordan Entrikin recorded an RBI single to score Harris in the top third inning.

The Comets answered back with two runs in the bottom fifth inning.  Mihic reached on base by a walk.  Spencer Mallonee added a single to advance Weber (courtesy runner for Mihic) to second base.  A defensive error caused by DSU advanced Weber to third and Mallonee to second base.

Miller hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Weber, followed by Nate Williams' RBI single to score Mallonee as MSU knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom fifth.

Dakota State could not convert their scoring chances in the top seventh inning.  The Trojans left two runners on base.

Mihic led off the bottom seventh inning with a walk-off home run as the Comets rallied back for a 4-3 victory.

Harris collected two doubles and two RBIs for the Trojans.  Entrikin added two hits and an RBI.  Ratkie had two singles.  Brady Wauer and Jamie Jorgensen each recorded a double.  Serrata and Ryan Schlesser each had a hit.  Danny Lopiparo swiped one base.

Mihic was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, double and an RBI for the Comets.  Weber scored twice.  John Cahill recorded a double.  Miller had two singles and an RBI.  Pistulka and Williams each had a single and an RBI.  Mallonee had a single.

Dakota State outhit Mayville State 10-8.  The Comets left six runners on base while the Trojans had five runners left on base.

Bryant Westra (1-6) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He tossed six-plus innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.

Matthew Tomblin started the game for the Comets.  He worked for 2 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits.  Garret Osterode came in relief for 3 1/3 innings, limiting the Trojans to three hits.  Josh Janzen (2-1) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the victory.

Game 2:  Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Mayville State (N.D.) 3 – FINAL

MSU scored a run in the first three innings in the final game of the four-game series, but DSU used a pair of big innings to secure the victory.

Mihic led off the Comets with a single in the bottom first inning.  Mallonee hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Weber (courtesy runner for Mihic) to second base.  Pistulka recorded an RBI double to score Weber to give Mayville State a 1-0 lead.

With bases loaded situation for the Comets in the bottom second frame, Mason Swegarden recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to extend MSU's lead to 2-0.

Christian Berry hit an RBI single to score Miller, who hit a single with two outs, as Mayville State's lead grew to 3-0.

Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with four runs scored in the top fifth inning to overtake the lead from MSU.  Travis Fleming reached on base caused by Comets' defensive miscue.  JD Farley added a walk and advanced Fleming to second base.  Serrata hit an RBI single to score Fleming as DSU cut MSU's lead to 3-1.

Harris added an RBI ground out to score Farley as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 3-2 in the top fifth.  Entrikin added a 2-RBI single to score Ratkie and Serrata as DSU earned a 4-3 lead.

DSU added three runs in the top seventh inning to extend their lead to 7-3.  After Serrata reached on base by fielder's choice and Harris' single, Ian Barker smashed a 3-run home run to put Trojans up by four runs.

Mayville State went three-and-out in the bottom seventh as DSU secured the victory.

Barker was 2-for-3 with a home run, a single and collected three RBIs for the Trojans.  Entrikin added a single and two RBIs.  Serrata and Harris each had a hit and an RBI.  Jorgensen had a single.  Fleming and Farley each recorded a walk and scored once.

Mihic tallied two singles for the Comets.  Berry and Pistulka each recorded a double and an RBI.  Miller, Cahill and Jalen Hashbarger each had a single.

MSU had seven hits in the game compared to DSU six hits.  The Comets committed three defensive errors.

Mayville State left seven runners on base while the Trojans had six runners left on base.

Mitch Bouchard started on the pitching mound for DSU.  He worked for two innings and allowed two runs on four hits.  Connor Nagel (1-0) notched the victory in relief after tossing two innings.  He gave up one run on three hits.  Jordan Lerdal pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.  Taylor Boerger (S, 1) earned the save for DSu was he closed the game by tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Pistulka (2-4) suffered the pitching loss for MSU.  He allowed four runs (two unearned) on three hits in five innings.  Dylan Johnson pitched a scoreless sixth inning.  Camran Bonnema worked in the seventh inning and gave up three runs on two hits.

Dakota State continues their 13-game road trip Tuesday afternoon as they visit Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a nine-inning non-conference game.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bishop Mueller Field in Sioux City, Iowa.
