GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK:  The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan Baseball team (11-33 overall record, 6-10 North Star Athletic Association conference record) heads into their final week of regular-season play against a pair of opponents.  The Trojans conclude their 11-game road trip Wednesday against Briar Cliff (26-17-1) in a nine-inning non-conference game.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Bishop Mueller Field in Sioux City, Iowa.  DSU returns home this weekend to play their final NSAA's four-game series, hosting Presentation (S.D.) (14-35, 5-11 NSAA).  The doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon Sunday at Flynn Field in Madison, S.D.

TROJANS ADJUST SCHEDULE FOR WEDNESDAY, CONCLUE 11-GAME ROAD TRIP:  The DSU Baseball team was originally schedule to play Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Tuesday was moved to Wednesday.  The Trojans' non-conference doubleheader at long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled due to conference make-up games for the Tigers.  Dakota State (S.D.) will conclude their 11-game road trip that started since April 8 when they visited NCAA Division I North Dakota State along with stops in Jamestown (N.D.) on April 11-12, South Dakota State on April 15 and Mayville State (N.D.) on April 17-18.

DSU SENIORS:  The Trojans have nine seniors on this year's roster and they will be playing in there final career collegiate games at home versus Presentation (S.D.) this weekend.  The seniors include Mitch Bouchard (pitcher), Dylan Deckert (outfielder), Jordan Entrikin (infielder), JD Farley (who was a member of the Trojan Baseball program for four years/outfielder-pitcher), Danny Lopiparo (pitcher), Ryan Schlesser (catcher), Nick Serrata (infielder), Zac Smith (2014 North Star Athletic Association Baseball All-Conference Pitcher) and Bryant Westra (pitcher).  Bouchard, Entrikin, Lopiparo, Schlesser, Serrata, Smith and Westra were with the Trojan Baseball program for two years.

BATTLE FOR NSAA BASEBALL POSTSEASON POSITIONING:  All six North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) members are heading into their final weekend of conference play, battling for the postseason positioning for the upcoming NSAA Baseball Postseason Tournament to be held at the Astoria Field in Dickinson, N.D. on May 1-4.  Mayville State (N.D.) currently holds the sole possession for first-place with a 12-4 conference record, followed by Jamestown (N.D.) second with 11-5 NSAA record.  Valley City State (N.D.) is third with 9-7 conference record, followed by Dakota State (S.D.) fourth with 6-10 NSAA record.  Dickinson State (N.D.) and Presentation (S.D.) are tied for fifth in the NSAA Baseball standings with a 5-11 record.  The pairings for the NSAA Baseball Conference Tournament will be announced after the conclusion of the NSAA's four-game series this weekend.

TROJANS FELL SHORT TO NCAA DIVISION I SOUTH DAKOTA STATE:  Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to an 1-0 early lead  after Jordan Entrikin's RBI single at NCAA Division I South Dakota State on April 15, but the Jackrabbits scored a combined five unanswered runs in the first three innings to hold on to a 5-1 victory.  Dakota State used five different pitchers—Bryant Westra, Zac Smith, Connor Nagel, Luke Gassman and Taylor Boerger—in relief and limited SDSU to just two hits in the last five innings of the game.

WEATHER FORECAST:  According to the weather forecast on www.weather.com (Weather Channel) as of Tuesday evening, the weather forecast in Sioux City, Iowa for Wednesday calls for sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 50's for the highs.  The wind forecast comes from the northwest at 10 miles-per-hour.  This weekend in Madison, S.D. the weather forecast calls for cloudy skies on Saturday and partly cloudy skies on Sunday.  Both days' high temperatures will be near 60 degrees.  The wind forecast on Saturday comes from the east at 15 miles-per-hour, switching to the southeast on Sunday at 17 miles-per-hour.

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State went 1-4 record for the week.  The Trojans lost to NCAA Division I South Dakota State 5-1 on April 15.  DSU lost three times in the NSAA conference four-game series at Mayville State (N.D.) last weekend.  The Comets won the series opener 9-3 and held off the Trojans' comeback in the second game 3-2 on April 17.  DSU could not hold on to their 3-1 lead as MSU came-from-behind to defeat the Trojans 4-3 in the third game of the series on April 18.  Dakota State closed out the series with a 7-3 victory after falling behind 3-0.  Briar Cliff (Iowa) split the Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader at Doane (Neb.) on April 21, winning the first game 5-4 and losing the second game 10-8.  The Chargers had lost four times in the last five games and hold a two-game lead over second-place Mount Marty (S.D.) in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings (12-4 record).  Presentation (S.D.) went 1-3 record against members of the GPAC.  The Saints were swept by Mount Marty 3-1 and 9-0 on April 14 and split a doubleheader at Dordt (Iowa) on April 15 (losing the first game 12-2 and winning the second game 7-6).  PC were swept by Jamestown (N.D.) in the NSAA four-game series in Jamestown, N.D.  The Jimmies defeated the Saints 3-0 and 5-3 on April 18 and 8-2 and 10-5 on April 19.

LAST MEETING:  Briar Cliff (Iowa) won the last meeting with Dakota State (S.D.) on April 1 at Flynn Field.  The Chargers won 5-4 in 11 innings.  The Trojans rallied back with two runs in the bottom eighth inning to tie the game at 3-3 and extended the game into extra innings.  Both teams scored once in the 10th inning before the Chargers held off the Trojans with a run scored in the top 11th inning, while DSU could not convert their chances in the bottom 11th.  BCU also won 17-4 in the earlier meeting this season as part of the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational on March 9.  Dakota State took three of four games with Presentation (S.D.) in last year's NSAA four-game series.  The Trojans swept the doubleheader with the Saints 10-6 and 13-4 in Redfield, S.D. on April 25.  PC split the doubleheader with DSU on April 26 in Aberdeen, S.D.  PC won the first game 1-0 in 15 innings, but Dakota State bounced back with a 3-1 series finale victory over the Saints.

TEAM LEADERS:  Jake Harris leads Dakota State's (S.D.) offense attack by posting a batting average of .402.  He is 49-of-122 at the plate for the Trojans.  Both Harris and Jordan Entrikin are on their season-high 11-game hitting streak.  Harris also leads the team with 29 runs batted in (RBIs), averaging 0.8 RBIs per game for DSU.  Tyler Ratkie and Tony Poncia each swipe three bases this season.  Ian Barker leads the Trojans with four home runs and three triples.  Bryant Westra leads DSU and North Star Athletic Association in earned runs average of 3.86 (20 earned runs in 46 2/3 innings).  Mitch Bouchard records 30 strikeouts from the pitching mound, averaging 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

UP NEXT:  Dakota State (S.D.) awaits to hear the pairings for the upcoming North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Postseason Conference Tournament at Astoria Field in Dickinson, N.D.  All six NSAA members will kick off their first round on Friday, May 1.  The tournament runs through Monday, May 4 with the championship game.  The winner of the NSAA Baseball Postseason Conference Tournament will earn the NSAA Conference's automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round at nine different sites on May 11-14.
