SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Trailing 7-6 in the final inning of the baseball non-conference game at Bishop Mueller Field Wednesday afternoon, Dakota State (S.D.) came from behind with two runs scored to grab a one-run lead over Great Plains Athletic Conference's leader Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The Trojans were able to hold on to an 8-7 victory over the Chargers, concluding DSU's 11-game road over a span of two weeks.

Dakota State won their second straight game, improving their overall record to 12-33.  Briar Cliff, who holds the sole possession in the GPAC conference standings with a two-game lead (12-4 conference record), fell to 26-18-1 overall record.

The Trojans were unable to earn the first lead of the game after they left bases full in the top first innings after a pair of singles by Nick Serrata and Jake Harris and a walk by Jordan Entrikin

The Chargers grabbed the first lead of the game in the opening inning, thanks to Maurice Handcox, Jr. and Carter Ludwing back-to-back singles (Handcox, Jr. advanced to third base after Ludwig's single).  Scott Morton recorded an RBI after grounding out into a double play by DSU, allowing Handcox, Jr. to score for BCU 1-0 lead.

Briar Cliff scored three runs in the bottom fourth inning, highlighted by Chase Hernandez's 2-RBI triple to score Morton and Mike Nielsen who had back-to-back singles.  Branden Amenta added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hernandez as the Chargers' lead grew to 4-0.

Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with two runs scored in the top fifth frame.  As the Trojans set up a bases loaded situation (David Novak hit a single, followed by JD Farley and Tyler Ratkie back-to-back walks), Serrata produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Novak to cut BCU's lead to 4-1.

Harris drilled an RBI double to score Farley as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 4-2 in the top fifth inning.

The Chargers answered back with two runs scored in the bottom fifth after Nielsen's 2-RBI single.  BCU's lead expanded to 6-2.

The Trojans exploded for four runs in the top half of the seventh inning, rallying back to knot the game.  Farley hit a single to lead off for DSU.  Serrata added a single to advance Farley to second base.  Harris reached first by base-on-balls to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs.  Entrikin produced a 2-RBI single to score Farley and Serrata as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 6-4.

Dylan Deckert added a single in the top seventh inning to become a bases loaded situation for DSU.  Jamie Jorgensen was hit-by-pitch and earned an RBI to score Harris, trailing by one run at 6-5.  Ryan Schlesser recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Entrikin as Dakota State tied the game at 6-6.

Briar Cliff regained their lead at 7-6 in the bottom seventh inning.  Morton hit a triple and then eventually scored caused by a wild pitch by DSU's Connor Nagel.

Dakota State mounted a comeback in the final inning.  Harris led off the top ninth inning with a single.  Deckert added a single with one out and advanced Harris to second base.  Jorgensen recorded a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Schlesser was hit-by-pitch, collecting an RBI to score Harris as the Trojans knotted the game for the second time at 7-7 in the top ninth inning.  Farley added an RBI walk to score Deckert as the Trojans earned their first lead of the game at 8-7.

Briar Cliff could not convert their scoring chances in the bottom ninth inning as DSU sealed the victory.  Handcox, Jr. opened up with a single, but he was caught stealing at second base.  BCU left a runner on first base when the game ended.

Harris and Serrata each were 3-of-4 at the plate with an RBI for Dakota State.  Deckert was 2-for-2 with two singles and scored once.  Farley added a hit, RBI and reached on base by a walk three times.  Schlesser had a hit and earned two RBIs.  Entrikin recorded a single and two RBIs.  Novak had a hit.  Jorgensen swiped one base and recorded an RBI.  Ratkie, Harris, Entrikin and Jorgensen each recorded a walk.

Handcox, Jr. was 3-of-5 at the plate with three singles for Briar Cliff.  Ludwig, Nielsen and Hernandez each had two hits.  Both Nielsen and Hernandez tallied two RBIs.  Jeff Hackenmueller had two singles.  Amenta had a hit and an RBI.  Morton had a triple.

BCU recorded 13 hits in the game compared to DSU 12 hits.  The Trojans left 11 runners on base while the Chargers left 6 runners on base.

Richard Sternberg started the game on the pitching mound for DSU.  He pitched five innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits.  Sternberg recorded four strikeouts.  Nagel (2-0) earned his second straight victory in relief after working for three innings.  He gave up one run on two hits and struck out three BCU's batters.  Zac Smith (S, 1) earned his first save this season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Tyler Delperdang pitched the first four innings of the game for Briar Cliff.  He gave up two runs on five hits.  Brazis Horak tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits.  Justin Mauro, Owen Harris and Luke Lindsey combined for one-hitter in relief for 1 2/3 innings.  Jon Muller (4-3) recorded the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth inning.

Dakota State returns back home this weekend as they play their final North Star Athletic Association's four-game series conference action, hosting Presentation (S.D.).  The doubleheaders are slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday at Flynn Field in Madison, S.D.
