MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Presentation (S.D.) headed in their final weekend of North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball four-game series at Flynn Field Saturday.  The Trojans scored all three runs in the opening inning of the first game of the series, holding off the Saints 3-1 for DSU's third straight victory.  Dakota State could not extend their winning streak in the second game as PC held off Trojans' late comeback for a 14-11 11-inning victory.

Dakota State stands at 13-34 overall record and 7-11 in NSAA conference action (currently fourth in the NSAA conference standings).  Presentation is 15-37 overall record and 6-12 NSAA conference record (fifth in the NSAA standings).

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Presentation (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

The Trojans scored all of their three runs in the opening inning, along with Bryant Westra's complete game victory give DSU a 3-1 victory.

Nick Serrata drilled a double with one out in the bottom first frame for DSU.  Jordan Entrikin blasted a 2-run home run – his third home run of the season – with two outs to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. 

Dakota State continued their hitting as they recorded three consecutive singles by Ian Barker, Jamie Jorgensen and Richard Sternberg.  Sternberg produced an RBI single to score Barker as DSU's lead grew to 3-0.

Jesse Spangler led off the top third inning with a solo home run as Presentation trimmed their deficit to 3-1.

The Trojans prevented the Saints' scoring opportunities in the top sixth inning.  With bases loaded and two outs for PC, DSU ended the top half of the sixth inning as Jorgensen caught a line drive from Ryan Baldonado.

DSU secured the victory as Presentation went three-and-out in the final inning.

Jorgensen was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two singles and a walk for the Trojans.  He swiped two bases.  Entrikin had a home run and two RBIs.  Serrata had a double.  Sternberg recorded a single and an RBI.

Josh Youngchilid was 2-of-3 at the plate for the Saints.  Spangler had a home run and an RBI.  Johnnie Morris added a single.

DSU had six hits in the game, with five hits coming from the first inning.  PC had four hits.

Defensively, the Trojans produced three double plays in the game.  The Saints had one double play.

Dakota State left six runners on base while Presentation had three runners left on base.

Westra (2-6) tossed a complete game victory for the Trojans.  He limited the Saints to one run on four hit and ended the game with a strikeout. 

Baldonado (1-7) recorded the loss, despite pitching a complete game for the Saints.  He gave up three runs on six hits.

Game 2:  Presentation (S.D.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 11 – FINAL/11 innings

Trailing 11-8 in the bottom ninth inning, the Trojans rallied back to knot the game and extended the game into extra innings.  The Saints were able to score three runs in the top 11th inning and held off DSU in a 14-11 thriller.

Dakota State jumped to a 2-0 early lead in the bottom first inning.  Tyler Ratkie led off with a walk.  Serrata hit a single to advance Ratkie to second base.  On the same play, a defensive error caused by PC advanced Ratkie to third base and Serrata to second base.  Jake Harris produced an RBI single to score Ratkie as the Trojans grabbed their first lead of the game at 1-0 (Serrata advanced to third base).

Entrikin added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Serrata as the Trojans gain a two-run lead in the bottom first.

The Saints exploded for seven runs in the top second inning, overtaking the lead from DSU.  PC recorded three singles from Youngchild, Spangler and Drew Sanders to set up a bases loaded situation with one out.  Albert Castro recorded an RBI walk to score Youngchild to trim DSU's lead to 2-1.

Presentation continued their scoring run with three runs scored from DSU's defensive errors to overtake a 4-2 lead in the top second frame.  Baldonado added a 2-RBI single to extend PC's lead to 6-2.  PC made it 7-2 after Youngchild's RBI single.

The Saints put together two more runs in the top fourth inning.  Lane Hovde led off with a single, followed by Tony Hofman's double to advance Hovde to third.  Baldonado recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hovde as PC's lead grew to 8-2.  Presentation made it 9-2 after Spangler blasted an RBI double to score Hofman.

With bases loaded and one out in the top fifth, Hofman added an RBI ground out to make it 10-2 in favor of PC. 

The Trojans came out with an outburst in the bottom fifth frame, thanks to seven consecutive batters reaching safely.  Ratkie, Serrata and Harris hit back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off for the Trojans.  Entrkin was hit-by-pitch and earned an RBI to score Ratkie as DSU cut PC"s lead to 10-3.

Ian Barker added a 2-RBI single to score Serrata and Harris to reduce Trojans' deficit to 10-5 in the bottom fifth.  Jorgensen hit a 3-run home run – his fourth home run of the season – as DSU trimmed Saints' lead to 10-8.

Presentation added a run in the top seventh inning, expanding their lead by three runs.  Morris was hit-by-pitch to open the seventh.  Hovde hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Morris to second base.  Hofman produced an RBI single to score Morris to extend PC's lead to 11-8.

The Trojans mounted a furious comeback in the bottom ninth inning.  Barker started off with a double for the Trojans.  Sternberg, pinch hitter for Ryan Schlesser, reached on base after being struck out swinging but a wild pitch was committed by PC's Jared Ayres.  Sternberg swiped to second base and Barker advanced home after PC's defensive miscue as DSU trailed 11-9.

JD Farley drilled an RBI double to score Sternberg as the Trojans cut PC's lead to 11-10 with two outs.  Ratkie followed with an RBI single to score Farley to knot the game at 11-11, forcing the game to go into extra innings.

The Saints went three-and-out in the top 10th inning.

Dakota State had a bases loaded situation with two outs in the bottom 10th inning, but was unable to convert their scoring opportunities.

Morris and Hovde hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top 11th inning for the Saints.  Hofman went on to hit a 3-run home run to give PC a 14-11 lead.

The Trojans went three-and-out in the bottom 11th inning as the Saints sealed off with the victory.

Serrata was 5-of-7 at the plate with a double, four singles and scored twice for DSU.  Farley added two doubles and an RBI.  Barker had a double, two singles and two RBIs.  Jorgensen had a home run and collected three RBIs.  Ratkie and Harris each had two hits and an RBI.  Entrikin had two singles and two RBIs, extending his hitting streak to 14 straight games.  Schlesser had a single.  Sternberg and Barker each recorded a stolen base.

Hofman was 4-of-5 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, single and tallied five RBIs for PC.  Hovide added three hits and scored three times.  Youngchild and Spangler each had three hits and an RBI.  Morris recorded a single and Albert Castro each had a hit and an RBI.  Hovde swiped one base.

PC outhit DSU 20-18 in the game.

The Saints left 14 runners on base.  The Trojans had 14 runners left on base.

Garrison Collier started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for 1 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (three unearned) on six hits.  Zac Smith pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on five hits.  Taylor Boerger tossed two innings and allowed one run on three hits.  Mitch Bouchard (2-6) recorded the loss, despite working for four innings and giving up three runs on six hits.

Henry Neils pitched four-plus innings for Presentation.  He allowed seven runs on 10 hits.  Ryan Wolf worked for two outs in the fifth inning and gave up one run on two hits.  Ayres tossed 4 2/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs (one unearned) on six hits.  Emilio Griego (2-2) earned the victory after pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Dakota State and Presentation battle out for the NSAA postseason positioning on the final day of conference play Sunday afternoon.  The doubleheader kicks off at 12 noon at Flynn Field.
