GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK:  The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan Baseball team (15-34 overall record) begins their postseason run Friday afternoon as they open up the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Conference Tournament.  The conference tournament will be held at Astoria Field in Dickinson, N.D., hosted by Dickinson State University (N.D.).  The Trojans, No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, takes on No. 3 seed Valley City State (N.D.) (30-23) in the opening round.  First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. (Central Time)/3 p.m. (Mountain Time).

DSU EARNS VICTORY OVER CONFERENCE LEADERS:  Dakota State (S.D.) posted two straight victories over a pair of conference leaders last week.  The Trojans concluded their four-game series against NSAA"s conference co-leader Mayville State (N.D.) on April 18.  DSU trailed 3-0 in the game, but stormed back by scoring seven runs for a 7-3 victory.  Dakota State added another victory over a conference leader, Briar Cliff (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, on April 22.  DSU trailed 7-6 before heading in the ninth inning and scored two runs to hold off the Chargers by the score of 8-7.

TROJANS FINISH REGULAR-SEASON STRONG:  Dakota State (S.D.) finished their regular-season schedule with a strong finish, winning five times in the last six games.  The Trojans established their first three game winning streak before falling short to Presentation (S.D.) 14-11 in 11 innings thriller at Flynn Field.  DSU finished their NSAA conference schedule by winning four games in the last five games, including a victory over NSAA"s co-leader Mayville State (N.D.) on April 18 and taking three of four games versus Presentation (S.D.) on April 25-26.

NSAA BASEBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT:  Mayville State (N.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.) shared the NSAA Baseball regular-season title with a 15-5 record.  The Comets split their four-game series this season, but MSU owns the tiebreaker after taking three of four games with No. 3 seed Valley City State (N.D.) (UJ split four-game series with VCSU).  The tournament kicks off with No. 2 seed Jamestown taking on No. 5 seed Presentation (S.D.) at 12 p.m. (Mountain Time), followed by VCSU playing No. 4 seed Dakota State (S.D.) at 3 p.m. (MT).  In the night cap, host-team and No. 6 seed Dickinson State (N.D.) takes on the top-seed Mayville State.  The tournament runs through May 4 with the championship game.  All tournament games will be consisted of nine inning games with 10-run rule after seven innings.  There will be no 10-run rule in the championship game.

AUTOMATIC BID:  The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) have one automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round.  The tournament champion receives a berth to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, which will be played on May 12-15 at nine different campus sites announced by the NAIA.  The winner of each national tournament opening round will earn a spot in the NAIA Baseball World Series to be held in Lewiston, Idaho from May 22-29.

WEATHER FORECAST:  According to the weather forecast on www.weather.com (Weather Channel) as of Thursday, the weather forecast in Dickinson, N.D. for Friday through Monday calls for dry conditions.  The high temperatures will be in the upper 70's for Friday and Saturday, before falling into the upper 60's on Sunday and Monday.  The winds will range from 10-to-20 miles-per-hour.

DSU-VCSU SERIES RECAP:  Dakota State (S.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) both met on the NSAA's conference opening weekend at Flynn Field on March 28-29.  The Vikings kicked off the four-game series by grabbing a 4-0 opening lead and held off the Trojans' late rally for an 8-6 victory on March 28.  DSU answered back by beating the Vikings in the second game of the series in a nine-inning game.  The Trojans defeated the Vikings 5-4.  On March 29, DSU won the third game of the four-game series after VCSU took a 2-0 opening lead.  The Trojans went on to outscore the Vikings 9-1 after the first innings to gain a 9-3 victory.  Dakota State earned a 2-0 first inning lead in the four-game series finale, but the Vikings outscored the Trojans 8-0 in the last four innings of the game for an 8-2 victory.  Both DSU and VCSU split their four-game series this season.

DSU'S LAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE:  The Trojans went 0-2 record in last year's NAIA Unaffiliated North Star Athletic Association/Frontier Conference Tournament at Charlie Brown Stadium in Valley City, N.D. on May 2-5, 2014. DSU was the No. 4 seed and faced No. 3 seed Valley City State (N.D.) in the opening round on May 2, 2014.  Dakota State had a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom ninth inning before the Vikings rallied back to knot the game at 7-7 and extended the game into extra innings.  VCSU secured the game after scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom 11th inning for an 8-7 win.  The Trojans were eliminated by the top-seed Jamestown (N.D.) on the next day on May 3.  DSU rallied back to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom 5th inning, but the Jimmies scored once in 6th and four runs in the 8th inning for an 8-3 victory.

TEAM LEADERS:  Jake Harris leads Dakota State with a batting average of .392.  He is 56-of-143 at the plate for the Trojans this season and leads the team in slugging percentage with 11 doubles and three home runs.  Both Harris and Jordan Entrikin leads the team with 33 runs batted in.  Entrikin is currently on a season-high 16-game hitting streak for DSU.  Jamie Jorgensen records six home runs this season for Dakota State, including a pair of home runs in a single game in an 11-5 victory versus Presentation (S.D.) on April 26.  He also leads the team with four stolen bases.  Bryant Westra records an earned run average (ERA) of 3.52 with 21 earned runs in 53 2/3 innings for the Trojans.  Richard Sternberg leads the team with 41 strikeouts from the pitching mound.
