DICKINSON, N.D. - Top seed Mayville State University (N.D.) won a slugfest Saturday at the North Star Athletic Association conference baseball tournament, advancing to the semifinals with a 16-12 victory over No. 4 seed Dakota State University (S.D.).

The two teams combined for 41 hits, 12 doubles, three home runs and seven errors in the game that lasted 3 hours and 1 minute

Mayville State (37-19 overall record) advances to play at 12 p.m (Mountain Time) on Sunday in a semifinal game against the winner of No. 3 seed Valley City State (N.D.) and No. 5 seed Presentation College (S.D.). Dakota State (15-36) is eliminated from the tournament.

The Comets scored in six of the first seven innings as they built a 14-8 lead after the top of the seventh inning.

Mayville had three runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth as their big offensive innings. The 4-run sixth inning came on two 2-run home runs off the bats of Darrin Stanislawski and Zach Mihic.

Dakota State didn't back down, scoring three runs in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to stay within striking distance. Both teams scored runs in six straight innings from the third through the eighth.

Mayville State catcher Zach Mihic led the offensive charge with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two. He had a 2-run home run and two doubles. Spencer Mallonee went 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBIs in the game. He also hit a home run and a double. Six other Comets had two hits each.

Mayville State starter Matt Tomblin started on the mound for Mayville State, allowing seven hits and three runs in three innings. Josh Janzen was the most effective pitcher for the Comets, and he picked up the win after allowing just one hit and one run over the final two innings.

Richard Sternberg took the loss for Dakota State, giving up nine hits and eight runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Jake Harris, Ryan Schlesser and Jamie Jorgensen all had 4-hit days for Dakota State, which never led in the game but battled all day to stay within striking distance. Harris finished 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs. Schlesser went 4-for-5 with a run, and Jorgensen was 4-for-5 with a run and three RBIs. Three other Trojans had two hits each.

It was the final collegiate baseball career game for nine DSU's seniors - Mitch Bouchard, Dylan Deckert, Jordan Entrikin, JD Farley, Danny Lopiparo, Ryan Schlesser, Nick Serrata, Zac Smith and Bryant Westra.
