SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside (Iowa), a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), held Dakota State (S.D.) to .066 hitting percentage Wednesday evening for a 3-0 sweep at RVSC-Allee Gym.  The Mustangs were able to hold off the Trojans in a pair of two-point sets, winning 25-23, 25-11 and 27-25.

Dakota State, who returned back to the Midwest area after their tournament in Florida last weekend, dropped to 2-3 overall.  Morningside won their third straight match after opening the season with two straight losses (3-2 overall record).

MC led from the beginning to the end of the opening set with a 25-23 victory.  The Trojans couldn't complete their comeback at the end after trailing 24-20.  DSU scored three straight points before the Mustangs secured the first set after a kill by Jayde Bergmann.

Morningside dominated the second set after cruising to a 22-9 lead.  The Mustangs hit .455 (18 kills with 3 errors in 33 attempts) for a 25-11 second set victory over the Trojans.  DSU hit .056 in the set (7 kills with 5 errors in 36 attempts).

Trailing 16-11 in the third set, Dakota State mounted a rally by scoring six consecutive points for their first lead of the match at 17-16, thanks to four straight service aces from Tessa Weeldreyer.

Leading 24-23, the Mustangs was able to save DSU's set point and scored two straight points to grab a 25-24 and forced the Trojans to call timeout.  After a kill by Trojan Alicia Karst to tie the third set at 25-25, the Mustangs secured the match after a pair of kills by Aneisha Ford and Ashton Schweers for a 27-25 victory.

Carly Rozell led the Trojans with seven kills.  Kirstin Johnson and Weeldreyer each added five kills.  Karst had four kills.

Rachel Johnson produced 13 set assists for DSU.  Kaylee Vander Wal added 10 assists.

Weeldreyer had a season-high four aces for Dakota State.  Rozell and Allison Thielsen each had an ace.

DSU's Chelsey Davis collected 12 digs.  Thielsen had eight digs. 

Weeldreyer recorded six block assists for the Trojans.  Kylie Martin contributed three block assists.

Three MC players recorded in double digits kills, led by Bergmann with 13 kills.  Schweers added 12 kills.  Kaitlynn Madsen had 10 kills.  Morgan Whitehead recorded nine kills.

Morgan O'Malley had a match-high 42 assists for the Mustangs.  She had two service aces.

Gabi French led Morningside's defense with 27 digs.

The Mustangs hit .395 in the match (50 kills with 18 errors in 126 attempts).  The Trojans had 27 kills with 19 errors in 121 attempts.

DSU had eight blocks, while MC had five blocks.  The Trojans recorded six service aces compared to the Mustangs four service aces.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they face another GPAC foe on the road.  The Trojans face the NAIA's preseason nationally-ranked No. 12 Northwestern (Iowa) next Wednesday (Sept. 2) at Bultman Center in Orange City, Iowa.  There will be a junior varsity match at 6 p.m., followed by a varsity match at 7:30 p.m.
