VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) stormed back after trailing 2-0 in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) volleyball conference action at Graichen Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, defeating Valley City State (N.D.) in another five-set thriller.  The Trojans posted scores of 18-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16 and 15-8 to extend their season-high winning streak to five matches.

Dakota State moved back to .500 with an overall record of 9-9 and recorded their second straight victory in five sets.  The Trojans remained atop of the NSAA conference standings with Jamestown (N.D.) with a 2-0 record.  Valley City State fell to 7-7 overall record and suffered their first NSAA conference loss of the season (2-1 record).

At 12-10 in the first set, the Vikings scored five straight points to extend their lead to 17-10.  The Trojans could get no closer than six points on seven different occasions as VCSU secured a 1-0 match lead with a 25-18 victory.

With the score tied at 12-12 in the second set, the Trojans used a 4-0 scoring run to gain a 16-12 lead.  However, VCSU answered back by closing the second set with a 13-6 run – including eight of the last ten points of the second set – for a 25-22 victory, extending their match lead to 2-0.

The Trojans opened up a 7-1 lead in the third set and went on to force the fourth set with a 25-20 victory.

DSU used another fast start in the fourth set, grabbing an 11-3 lead.  The Trojans hit .367 in the fourth set (12 kills with 1 error in 30 attempts), cruising to a 25-16 victory to force the fifth and deciding set.

Leading 6-4 in the fifth set, Dakota State went on to score three straight points – a kill by Kylie Martin, Carly Rozell and Alicia Karst – for a 9-4 lead.  The Trojans were able to close out the match with a 15-8 victory.

Three Dakota State recorded double-digits kills, led by Karst with 15 kills.  She hit a season-high .609 in the match by committing just one attack error in 23 attempts.  Rozell had a double-double of 13 kills and 18 digs.  Tessa Weeldreyer had 10 kills and hit .500 in the match.

Kaylee Vander Wal posted a double-double of 24 assists and 12 digs for the Trojans.  Rachel Johnson added 20 assists.

Chelsey Davis collected 30 digs for the Trojans.  Weeldreyer had two service aces.

Kiristin Johnson recorded four block assists and a solo block for DSU.  Karst added three block assists and a solo block.

Chelzie-Kristina Ulu led the Vikings with 12 kills.  Seri Geisler added 10 kills.

Stephanie Miller had 30 assists and 5 service aces for VCSU.  Taylor Balkan had 15 assists.  Hailie Wilds recorded 15 digs. 

Ulu and Autumn Johnson each had three block assists for Valley City State.

DSU outhit VCSU 55-54.  The Trojans hit .255 in the match (17 errors in 149 attempts) while the Vikings hit .141 (29 errors in 177 attempts).

The Trojans had nine blocks compared to Vikings five blocks.  VCSU had 12 service aces, but committed 14 serving errors.  DSU had 2 service aces and 9 serving errors.

Dakota State plays their home opener Thursday evening as they continue their NSAA conference play.  The Trojans look to extend their winning streak as they host Presentation at DSU Fieldhouse.  There will be a junior varsity match at 5:30 p.m., followed by a varsity match at 7 p.m.
