MADISON, S.D. – Tied 6-6 with 16 minutes and 37 seconds left in the first-half, Dakota State (S.D.) roared with a 54-21 scoring run over Mount Marty (S.D.) to earn a huge 33-point halftime lead Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse in both teams' season opener.  The Trojans – who received votes recognition in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, dominated the Lancers by hitting the century mark with a 105-63 victory.

Since Gary Garner's arrival at DSU in 2009-10, the Trojans have won seven consecutive season openers.  Dakota State extended their home winning streak to five games, dating to last season where the Trojans had won the last four home games at DSU Fieldhouse (won nine of the last ten home games).

DSU had won their ninth straight meeting in the series meeting with the Lancers (a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference).

Leading 10-8 with 14:44 left in the first-half, Dakota State scored 11 straight points to extend their lead to 21-8 with 12:09 left on the clock. 

DSU's lead grew to 60-27 by intermission, thanks to a sizzling 63.6 percent shooting in the first-half (21-of-33 from the field) including a 3-pointer by Brendon Boomsma at the halftime buzzer.  MMC was held to 36 percent shooting from the field (9-of-25) and committed 17 turnovers in the first twenty minutes of the game.

Dakota State maintained their control for the rest of the game, recording their largest lead of the game at 102-54 after a lay-up by Taylor Zirbel.

DSU outscored MMC 45-36 in the second-half.  The Trojans shot 55.9 percent from the field, converting 19 of 34 field goals.  Mount Marty was 46.2 percent from the field (12-of-26).

Seven Trojan players scored in double figures, including all five starters.  Kyle Kilgore led DSU with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field.  Ian Barse added 15 points (6-of-12 field goals, including 3-of-5 from the 3-point line).  Boomsma tallied 13 points. 

DSU's Derek Meger was perfect from the field by going 5-of-5 and added two free-throws for 12 points.  Tanner Heiser and Zirbel each registered 10 points.

Kilgore and Zirbel each grabbed seven rebounds for Dakota State.  Boomsma earned five boards. 

Both Kilgore and Heiser dished out five assists for the Trojans.  Nathaniel Rauen added four assists.

Seven DSU players recorded at least two steals in the game, led by Boomsma with three steals.  Kilgore, Meger, Barse, JoBreil Powell, Rauen and Adam Hofer each stole the ball twice.

KJ DeCristino led all scorers for the Lancers with 16 points (5-of-10 from the field).  Patrick Ciganovic and Anthony Stransky each added eight points.

Cody Willett pulled down six rebounds for Mount Marty.  Five MMC players had two rebounds.

Willet dished out four assists for the Lancers. 

Dakota State shot a blistering 59.7 percent overall from the field, making 40 baskets in 67 attempts.  Mount Marty was 41.2 percent from the field (21-of-51 field goals).

The Trojans were 7-of-16 from the 3-point arc (43.8 percent), while the Lancers were 5-of-19 from the 3-point line (26.3 percent).

Both teams went to the free-throw line 25 times with DSU making 18 free-throws and MMC with 16 free-throws.

Dakota State dished out 22 assists in the game compared to Mount Marty 9 assists.

The Trojans outscored the Lancers 20-4 in transition points, 32-12 in points off turnovers and 56-36 inside the paint.

Dakota State heads on the road for the first time on Tuesday.  The Trojans face another opponent from the GPAC, visiting No. 13 nationally-ranked Dordt (Iowa) in Sioux Center, Iowa.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DeWitt Gymnasium.
