THIS WEEK: Dakota State prepares for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The Trojans will travel to San Marcos, Calif. to compete in the independent conference meet. The women's 5K race kicks off at 11 a.m. (Central Time)/9 a.m. (Pacific Time), followed by the men's 8K race at approximately 12 noon (Central Time)/10 a.m. (Pacific Time).
A.I.I. CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS: The A.I.I. meet, hosted by Cal State San Marcos University, features top two women's teams (No. 1 and three-time defending NAIA National Champions Cal State San Marcos and No. 2 British Columbia) in the nation. A total of six teams are expected in the meet - Ashford (Iowa), Dakota State (S.D.), Jamestown (N.D.) and Johnson & Wales (Colo.) On the men's side, two 'Top Five' teams are expected to run in the meet (No. 2 British Columbia and No. 4 Cal State San Marcos). The men's field also includes Ashford (Iowa), Dakota State (S.D.), Jamestown (N.D.) and Johnson & Wales (Colo.). The race will be held at the Mangrum Track and Soccer Field on the campus of Cal State San Marcos. The A.I.I. meet gives the runners their chance to qualify for the NAIA Cross Country National Championships to be held on Nov. 17 in Vancouver, Wash.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State women's and men's cross country teams finished their final regular-season meet on Oct. 20 at the Mount Marty/Graphic Edge Invitational. The Trojan women's team finished 12th with 336 points. Kayla Sveen finished 81st with a time of 21 minutes and 12.71 seconds. Brooke Fritz ran her personal best time of 21:33.99 for a 92nd place finish. Stephanie Uher was 107th in 22:06.75, while Anastasia Asimakopoulos was 108th in 22:08.73. Summer Bronson finished 115th in 22:25.75. Amber Wiebenga ran a time of 23:12.57 for a 128th-place finish. On the men's side, Nic Penning recorded a time of 26:22.71 for a 15th-place finish for the Trojans. Taylor Hauge was 120th with a time of 29:15.72. Jared Sutton finished 148th in 30:40.02.
COACHES' CORNER: Buzz Stevenson is the head coach for the Trojan cross country teams. He has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at Dakota State, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference (SDIC) Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains Athletic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year awards. Stevenson has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in cross country. He competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams. He holds numerous school records and was a two-time NAIA All-American athlete. Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference championship in cross country during the fall of 2009. Cody Foreman and Matt Fideler are the student assistant coaches with the Trojan cross country teams.
