MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) built up a 14-point lead in the first-half Tuesday evening in men's basketball non-conference action versus long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  The Tigers used a strong first-half closing run for a one-point halftime lead and pulled away past the Trojans by the score of 80-71 at DSU Fieldhouse.

Dakota State (S.D.), receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, fell to 2-2 overall record.  Dakota Wesleyan, who was national runner-up in last year NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament and ranks No. 24 in the preseason coaches' national poll, lifted their overall record to 3-1.

The Trojans opened up with an 18-9 lead with thirteen minutes and five seconds on the clock in the first-half. 

Before DWU trimmed DSU's lead to 25-19, Dakota State surged with an 8-0 run – with five points coming from Tanner Heisier and three points by Adam Hofer – for the biggest lead of the game at 33-19 with 8:41 left before intermission.

Dakota Wesleyan went on to outscore Dakota State 24-9 in the final 8:31 of the first-half.  Tate Martin nailed down a pair of free-throws with less than 40 seconds to give DWU a 43-42 halftime lead.

DSU was 50 percent shooting from the field in the first-half (18-of-36) compared to DWU 48.5 percent (16-of-33).  Both teams made four 3-pointers, but DWU was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to DSU 2-of-3 free-throws.

The Trojans regained the lead back at 44-43 with a field goal by Kyle Kilgore to kick off the second-half with 19:37 on the clock.  The Tigers answered with a 7-0 scoring run for a 50-44 lead with 18:29 left.

Then, Dakota State went on an 11-2 scoring outburst to overtake the lead from Dakota Wesleyan at 55-52 with 14:30 left in the game.

DWU responded with a 12-2 run for a 64-57 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.  The Trojans pulled within one point at 64-63 with 6:57 remaining after a field goal by Ian Barse.

Dakota Wesleyan went on to close the game by using a 16-8 run in the final 5:33 of the game to secure the victory.

The Tigers outscored the Trojans 37-29 in the second-half.  DSU was held to 37.5 percent shooting from the field (12-of-32) in the final twenty minutes of the game.

Barse led Dakota State with 17 points on his 7-of-15 shooting from the field.  Heiser added 13 points.  Kilgore scored 12 points.  Derek Meger produced a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Hofer scored seven points and dished out six assists for the Trojans.  Barse, Heiser and Taylor Zirbel each had two assists.

Hofer stole the ball three times for DSU.  Nathaniel Rauen added two steals.

Jade Miller registered a game-high 20 points for DWU.  Trae Bergh added 19 points.  Martin had 16 points (6-of-7 field goals and 4-of-4 free-throws).  Trae Vandeberg scored 12 points off the bench.

Jason Spicer grabbed eight rebounds for the Tigers.  Terrell Newton and Jade Miller each had seven rebounds. 

Martin recorded six rebounds and six assists for Dakota Wesleyan. 

DWU shot 46.7 percent overall from the field (28-of-60) compared to DSU 44.1 percent (30-of-68).  The Tigers were 6-of-21 from the 3-point line while the Trojans were 5-of-23 3-pointers.

Dakota Wesleyan was near perfect from the free-throw line by going 18-of-19 free-throws, including a perfect 11-of-11 free-throws in the second-half.  DSU was 6-of-8 free-throws.

DWU outrebounded DSU 38-35.  Both teams had 15 assists.

Dakota State heads to the Corn Palace this weekend to play in the two-day Fulton State Bank Classic, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan.  The Trojans look to notch their first victory over a Top 25 team as they face No. 20 Tabor (Kan.) at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon in Mitchell, S.D.
