Cross Country - Thu, Oct. 18, 2012

THIS WEEK:  Dakota State women's and men's cross country runners return back to action Saturday morning.  The Trojans prepare to compete in their final regular-season meet in the 19th Annual Graphic Edge Invitational.  The race will be held at the Human Services Center in Yankton, S.D. with the women's meet starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's race at 11:15 a.m.

GRAPHIC EDGE INVITATIONAL:  The Graphic Edge Invitational is hosted by Mount Marty College.  Most of the members from the Great Plains Athletic Conference and other NAIA schools in the Midwest area are expected to compete in the race.  The women's race is a 5000-meter course, while the men's runners will run in the 8000-meters race.

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State was in action on Oct. 6 in the Briar Cliff Invitational.  Nic Penning placed 12th in the men's race with a time of twenty-five minutes and 50.80 seconds in the 8K race.  Taylor Hauge was 62nd in 27:17.74.  The Trojan women's team placed 14th with 420 points in the meet.  Kayla Sveen finished 96th with a time of 20:48.39.  Anastasia Asimakopoulos was 121st in 21:33.01.  Brooke Fritz placed 140th in 22:18.39. Summer Bronson recorded a time of 22:21.99 for a 141st place finish. Amber Wiebenga was 145th in 22:35.08.  Each DSU runner that competed in the Briar Cliff Invitational ran their personal best times this season.

A.I.I. CONFERENCE MEET:  The Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) cross country conference meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 in San Marcos, Calif.  The meet - hosted by Cal State San Marcos - features all NAIA's Independent schools for their chance to qualify for the NAIA Cross Country National Championships.  The NAIA national meet will be held in Vancouver, Wash. on Nov. 17.

COACHES' CORNER: Buzz Stevenson is the head coach for the Trojan cross country teams. He has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at Dakota State, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference (SDIC) Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains Athletic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year awards. Stevenson has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in cross country. He competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams. He holds numerous school records and was a two-time NAIA All-American athlete. Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference championship in cross country during the fall of 2009.  Cody Foreman and Matt Fideler are the student assistant coaches with the Trojan cross country teams.

UP NEXT:  Dakota State prepares for the A.I.I. Cross Country Conference Championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 3.  The meet will be held in San Marcos, Calif. - hosted by Cal State San Marcos.  The conference meet give the teams and runners their opportunities to qualify for the NAIA Cross Country National Championship meet on Nov. 17.
