SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Knotted at 79-79 Wednesday evening at the Sanford Pentagon, Dakota State's (S.D.) Brendon Boomsma drove inside the paint and nailed down the game-winning basket with less than five seconds remaining in the game for an 81-79 non-conference thriller over Northwestern (Iowa).  NWIA Colton Kooima's 3-point shot near the half-court shot at the buzzer hit the rim and rolled behind the backboard.

Dakota State snapped their three-game losing streak versus NWIA and raised their overall record to 6-5, earning their first victory over the Red Raiders since Nov. 6, 2013.  The Trojans ended NWIA's (member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference) four-game winning streak and dropped to 7-5 overall record.

DSU and NWIA battled through back-and-forth game in the first eight minutes of the game, featuring five ties and three lead changes.  Leading 18-17, the Trojans went on a 6-0 spurt by three different scorers (Ian Barse, Justin Folkers and Tanner Heiser) for a 24-17 lead with 10:37 remaining in the first-half.

Northwestern answered back with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 26-26 with less than eight minutes before halftime.

With the eighth tie recorded in the game at 30-30, Dakota State used another scoring run for the biggest lead of the game.  DSU went on a 13-4 run to grab a 43-34 lead with 3:05 on the clock after a 3-pointer by Heiser.

The Red Raiders stormed back by scoring nine consecutive points – including six points from Kooima – to knot the game at 43-all with less than a minute to go in the first period.

Nathaniel Rauen made a basket with 34 seconds to go in the first-half, giving DSU a slim 45-43 halftime advantage.  Kooima's shot was blocked by Derek Meger near the end of the first period.

Dakota State shot a sizzling 58.3 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (21-of-36) compared to Northwestern 56.3 percent (18-of-32).

The Trojans opened up a four-point lead in the second-half, but the Red Raiders went on a 16-8 run for a 59-53 lead with 14:49 remaining (Kooima scored 10 points during the scoring run for NWIA).

After DSU trimmed NWIA's lead down to two points after a pair of free-throws by Boomsma (63-61), Northwestern scored five straight points to gain the biggest lead of the second-half at 68-61 with 8:34 left.

Dakota State answered back to overtake Northwestern lead.  The Trojans used an 8-0 scoring run for a 69-68 lead with 7:09 left.

Both teams tied or traded leads in the final 6:29 of the game. 

DSU's Boomsma scored the final four points of the game.  Trailing 79-77, Boomsma made a lay-up with less than a minute to go in the game to tie the game at 79-79.

The Red Raiders committed a turnover on the following possession, which was stolen by DSU's Adam Hofer and called timeout with 26.5 seconds remaining in the game.

Boomsma drove inside the paint and nailed down the basket with less than four seconds left to give Trojans a two-point lead.  The Trojans secured the thrilling victory after NWIA's Kooima 3-point shot near the half-court hit the rim and went behind the backboard.

Both teams scored 36 points in the final twenty minutes of the game.   DSU shot 15-of-36 from the field (41.7 percent), while NWIA was 14-of-33 (42.4 percent) in the second-half.

A total of 15 ties and 11 lead changes were featured in the game.

Meger poured in 25 points for the Trojans.  He was 12-of-16 shooting from the field.  Boomsma added 13 points.  Kilgore recorded a double-double of 11 points (including a monstrous dunk late in the second-half with 4:32 remaining) and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Heiser tallied 10 points off the bench (4-of-6 field goals) for Dakota State.  Hofer had six points and dished out six assists.  Folkers scored eight points.

Meger earned seven boards and recorded two blocked shots for the Trojans.  Boomsma and Folkers each added four rebounds.

Boomsma and Barse each produced four assists for DSU.  Heiser stole the ball three times. 

Kooima had a game-high 29 points for the Red Raiders.  He was 10-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-6 from the 3-point line.  He converted all six free-throws.  Jordan Baker added 11 points.  Bryce Moss scored 10 points off the bench.

Nathan Wedel had seven points, collected seven rebounds and recorded six assists for NWIA.  Taylor Francis had seven assists and two steals.

Kooma and Mading Thok each had five rebounds for Northwestern.  Moss had two blocked shots.

Dakota State shot 50 percent overall from the field (36-of-72) compared to Northwestern 49.2 percent (32-of-65).  NWIA was 6-of-25 from the 3-point line, while DSU was 2-of-15 from the 3-point arc.

The Red Raiders made 9 free-throws in 15 attempts (60 percent).  The Trojans were 7-of-14 free-throws (50 percent).

NWIA outrebounded DSU 41-35 in the game. 

The Trojans outscored the Red Raiders 62-38 inside the paint and 24-14 in points off turnovers. 

Both teams will meet on Dec. 30 for the second meeting of the season in Orange City, Iowa.

Dakota State swings back in action next Wednesday (Dec. 16) as they face another foe from the GPAC conference, hosting nationally-ranked No. 12 Briar Cliff (Iowa).  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
