THIS WEEK:  Dakota State's cross country teams return back to action Saturday for the first time since Sept. 15.  The Trojan women's team will compete in the Trojan Day 5K run to be held in Madison on Egan Ave.  DSU men's team travels to Saint Paul, Minn. to run in the 27th Annual Roy Griak Invitational, which feature numerous quality teams from the Midwest area.  The race takes place at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Height.      

MEETS:  The Trojan women's cross country team will run in the Trojan Day 5K run with the race starting at 8 a.m.  The Trojan Day 5K run is part of Dakota State University's homecoming week festivities.  The DSU men's team will run in one of the largest meet in the country - the Roy Griak Invitational - hosted by the University of Minnesota.  The meet is comprised of six collegiate races and four high school races.  The day kicks off with the national anthem at 8:55 a.m.  DSU men's cross country team will run in the Men's Maroon II (Division II) competition at 11:30 a.m.

REGIONALLY SPEAKING:  The DSU women's team ranks No. 5 in the latest edition of independent weekly ranking.  British Columbia is currently at the top of the women's ranking, followed by Cal State San Marcos, Ashford (Iowa) and Jamestown (N.D.).  Johnson & Wales (Colo.) is at No. 6, Valley City State (N.D.) at No. 7, Voorhees (S.C.) at No. 8 and Kentucky Christian at No. 9.  On the men's side, Dakota State ranks No. 6.  Cal State San Marcos is No. 1, followed by British Columbia, Valley City State, Ashford and Jamestown.  The Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Cross Country conference meet will be held in San Marcos, Calif. on Nov. 3.

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State kicked off their 2012 season on Sept. 15.  The Trojans hosted the DSU/Herb Blakely Invitational at the Madison Country Club.  A total of three DSU runners placed in the top 10 in the meet.  The Trojan women's team placed third with 64 points.  Kayla Sveen placed ninth with a time of 22 minutes and two seconds.  Tara Ronke was 11th in 22:40.  Summer Bronson finished 13th in 23 minutes and three seconds.  Anastasia Asimakopoulos placed 16th in 23:38.  Amber Wiebenga was 18th in 24:31.  On the men's side, Andy Coy finished second behind the race's winner Matt Fideler (former DSU All-American runner) with a time of 26:22.  Nic Penning was fifth in 27:39.  Taylor Hauge placed 10th with a time of 28:50.

COACHES' CORNER:  Buzz Stevenson is the head coach for the Trojan cross country teams.  He has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years.  While at Dakota State, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference (SDIC) Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains Athletic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year awards.  Stevenson has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors.  Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in cross country.  He competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams.  He holds numerous school records and was a two-time NAIA All-American athlete.  Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference championship in cross country during the fall of 2009.
