MADISON, S.D. – Nationally-ranked Briar Cliff (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference never trailed in the game Thursday evening, defeating Dakota State (S.D.) 90-80 at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Chargers built a 20-point halftime lead and never looked back.

Dakota State, which faced their sixth NAIA's Top 25 team this season, fell to 6-6 overall record.  Briar Cliff, No. 12 in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Top 25 national poll, raised their overall record to 11-2.

The Chargers led 23-11 with eleven minutes and twenty-one seconds left in the first-half.  After the Trojans trimmed down their deficit to seven points at 23-16, BCU went on to score 12 straight points as their lead ballooned to 35-16 with less than five minutes left before intermission.

Briar Cliff grabbed a 46-26 halftime lead.  The Chargers shot 54.3 percent from the field (19-of-35), including 5-of-12 from the 3-point line.  The Trojans were 45.8 percent from the field in the first-half (11-of-24) and 2-of-5 from the 3-point arc.

DSU committed 10 turnovers in the first-half compared to BCU 2 turnovers.  The Chargers outscored the Trojans 15-0 in points off turnovers in the first twenty minutes.

Trailing 50-28 early in the second-half, Dakota State used an 11-2 spurt to cut BCU's lead to 52-39 with 16:33 remaining in the game.  The Trojans were 5-of-7 from the field during the scoring run.

Briar Cliff had the biggest lead of the game at 67-44 with 11:57 left.  The Trojans could get no closer than 10 points after a jumper by Adam Hofer with less than 12 seconds to go.

DSU outscored BCU 54-44 in the second-half.  The Trojans shot 55.9 percent from the field in the final twenty minutes (19-of-34) compared to the Chargers' 48.3 percent (14-of-29).

Kyle Kilgore led Dakota State with a game-high 24 points.  He was 10-of-14 from the field goal and made all four free-throws.  Hofer added 20 points on his 7-of-11 shooting from the field – including 4-of-8 from the 3-point arc – and converted both free-throws.  Derek Meger had 10 points.  Brendon Boomsma and Taylor Zirbel each added seven points. 

Kilgore collected eight rebounds for the Trojans.  Hofer had six rebounds.  Tanner Heiser collected five rebounds.

Hofer dished out a game-high six assists for DSU.  Kilgore and Boomsma each added three assists.

Hofer, Ian Barse, Heiser and Zirbel each recorded a steal.  Kilogre, Meger and Hofer each had a blocked shot.

Five BCU players scored in double digits, led by Clay Harreld with 19 points on his 7-of-16 shooting.  Shane Graves added 17 points (7-of-9 field goals).  Austin Lefler scored 15 points (5-of-6 field goals and 3-of-4 3-point field goals).  Erich Erdman scored 11 points off the bench.  Austin Homan had 10 points.

Ricky Williams pulled down eight rebounds for the Chargers.  Graves and Jay Wolfe each had five rebounds.

Graves produced five assists for Briar Cliff.  Bryan Forbes, Wolfe and Erdman each stole the ball twice.

Dakota State shot 51.7 percent overall from the field (30-of-58) compared to Briar Cliff 51.6 percent (33-of-64).  The Chargers, who ranked No. 6 in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (12.1), were held to eight 3-pointers made in 20 attempts (40 percent).  DSU was 6-of-18 from the 3-point line (33.3 percent).

BCU was 16-of-18 free-throws (88.9 percent).  DSU converted 14 free-throws in 20 attempts (70 percent).

The Trojans outrebounded the Chargers 35-29 in the game. 

DSU committed 22 turnovers, while BCU recorded 11 turnovers.  The Chargers outscored the Trojans 27-10 in points off turnovers.

Dakota State stays home Saturday afternoon as they look to bounce back in the winning column.  The Trojans host Mount Mercy (Iowa) in a non-conference game with a tip-off starting at 4 p.m.  The game will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse (the Lady T's will have a non-conference game versus Presentation, S.D. prior to the men's basketball game).
