ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern (Iowa) raced to an 11-0 opening lead Wednesday evening and never looked back in a 78-59 non-conference men's basketball victory over Dakota State (S.D.) at the Bultman Center.  The Red Raiders earned a season series split with the Trojans, with DSU winning the first meeting in an 81-79 thriller at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. earlier this month.

Dakota State lost their third straight game and fell to 6-8 overall record.  Northwestern, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 8-7 overall record.

The Red Raiders held the Trojans scoreless in the first four-and-half minutes of the game, propelling NWIA to an 11-0 lead.  DSU ended their scoring drought with a basket by Ian Barse with 15:11 left in the first-half.

Northwestern shot 58.1 percent in the first twenty minutes (18-of-31) as their lead grew to 51-22 by halftime.  Dakota State struggled from the field by making eight baskets in 25 attempts (32 percent).

The Red Raiders opened up the second-half with a 9-2 scoring run to record the biggest lead of the game at 60-24 with less than 16 minutes left in the game.

Dakota State outscored Northwestern 35-18 in the final 14:13 of the game.  The Trojans shot 50 percent from the field in the second-half (15-of-30) while holding the Red Raiders to 33.3 percent shooting from the field (10-of-30).

Barse scored 17 points off the bench for DSU.  Derek Meger added 14 points.  Both Barse and Meger went 7-of-14 shooting from the field.  Brendon Boomsma and Adam Hofer each tallied eight points. 

Kyle Kilgore and Boomsma each pulled down six rebounds for the Trojans.  Meger added five rebounds. 

Boomsma dished out four assists for Dakota State.  Hofer added two assists.  Kilgore stole the ball three tims.  Meger and Boomsma each had two steals.

Colton Kooma poured in 25 points on his 10-of-19 field goals for NWIA.  Nathan Wedel posted a double-double of 13 points and collected 17 rebounds.  Bryce Moss had eight points.

Wedel led the Red Raiders with five assists.  Jaxon Heinz added three assists. 

Northwestern shot 45.9 percent overall from the field, converting 28 baskets in 61 attempts.  Dakota State was 41.8 percent from the field (23-of-55).  NWIA drained 10 3-pointers in 25 attempts (40 percent), while DSU was 6-of-18 3-pointers (33.3 percent).

The Red Raiders wee 12-of-14 free-throws (85.7 percent).  The Trojans made 7 free-throws in 13 attempts (53.8 percent).

NWIA outrebounded DSU 40-31.  The Trojans outscored the Red Raiders 21-19 in points off turnovers and 26-22 inside the paint.

Dakota State continues their trip in Iowa on Saturday afternoon.  The Trojans kick off their 2016 calendar year with a non-conference match-up with Mount Mercy (Iowa).  The game will be held at Hennessey Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a tip-off at 3 p.m.
