MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held a 68-63 lead late in the second-half over Waldorf (Iowa) Wednesday evening in the North Star Athletic Association conference match-up at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Warriors held the Trojans scoreless in the final 3:43 of the game and closed the game with a 9-0 run for a 72-68 victory.

Dakota State lost their fifth straight game and fell to 6-10 overall record and 0-2 NSAA conference record.  Waldorf raised their overall record to 9-5 and 2-3 NSAA.

The Trojans held their lead for the first nine minutes of the game before the Warriors earned their first lead.  WC's Erik Brewer drained a 3-pointer with 10 minutes, 32 seconds left in the first-half for a 19-17 lead.

Waldorf expanded their lead to eight points at 27-19 with less than eight minutes left before intermission. 

DSU answered back by using a 14-6 scoring run to the tie the game for the fourth time at 33-33 after a 3-pointer by Ian Barse with 2:46 left in the first period.

WC held on to a slim 35-34 halftime lead over the Trojans.  DSU shot 45.5 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (15-of-33), while the Warriors were 42.9 percent (15-of-35).

Waldorf earned the biggest lead of the game at 54-44 with 11:43 remaining before the Trojans sparked their offense.

Dakota State stormed back with a 24-9 outburst to grab a 68-63 lead with 3:43 left.

The Trojans were unable to score in the final 3:43 of the game where they missed seven shots during the stretch.  The Warriors sealed the victory as June Prowell scored the last five points of the game from the free-throw line.

WC outscored DSU 37-34 in the second-half.

Barse poured in 20 points for Dakota State.  Kyle Kilgore added 17 points on his 8-of-13 field goal shooting.  Boomsma scored 11 points.  Derek Meger had eight points.

Tanner Heiser tallied six points, earned five rebounds and dished out five assists for the Trojans.

Taylor Zirbel and Kilgore collected eight rebounds for Dakota State.  Meger added six rebounds.

Barse produced four assists for DSU.  Boomsma and Adam Hofer each had three assists.

Zirbel recorded four blocked shots in the game for the Trojans.  Kilgore, Boomsma, Hofer and Heiser each had a steal.

Four Waldorf starters scored in double digits, led by Brewer and Prowell each with 18 points.  Tyler Parrish scored 17 points.  Michael Morgan posted a double-double of 10 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.

Prowell had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for WC.  Morgan dished out four assists. 

Dakota State shot 41.5 percent overall from the field (27-of-65) and held Waldorf to 37.7 percent (26-of-69).  DSU was 6-of-20 from the 3-point line (30 percent), while WC was 4-of-19 3-pointers (21.1 percent).

The Warriors were 16-of-21 free-throws (76.2 percent), including 15-of-19 free-throws in the second-half.  DSU struggled from the free-throw line, making eight free-throws in fifteen tries (53.3 percent).

WC outrebounded DSU 47-43.

Waldorf outscored the Trojans 12-0 in fast-break points and 15-8 in points off turnovers. 

The game featured eight ties and five lead changes.

Both teams will meet six days later (Jan. 12) for the second NSAA conference meeting of the season in Forest City, Iowa.

Dakota State plays their final non-conference tune-up on Saturday evening as they visit their long-time rival and nationally-ranked No. 13 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  The game is slated to tip off for 6 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
