THIS WEEK: Dakota State kicks off their 2012 cross country campaign Saturday morning at the Madison Country Club. The Trojans will host its annual home meet, the DSU/Herb Blakely Invitational (in honor of long-time former DSU head coach Herb Blakely). The women's race starts at 10:30 a.m. with the men's to follow at approximately 11:15 a.m.
PARTICIPATING TEAMS: As of Thursday, the following teams are scheduled to run on Saturday: Dakota State, Briar Cliff and Mount Marty. There will be some unattached runners in the race. Approximately a total of 60 runners are expected to attend.
DSU MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY IN THE NATIONAL POLL: In the first edition of the NAIA Men's Cross Country Coaches' Top 25 national poll released Wednesday (Sept. 12), Dakota State received vote recognition to the national poll. The Trojans tallied seven votes to the national poll. The second edition of the national poll will be released on Sept. 19.
2011 IN REVIEW: Dakota State qualified two runners to the NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championships a season ago. The Trojan men's cross country team finished third at the 2011 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference meet in San Marcos, Calif., while the women's team placed sixth. Dakota State men's team had won the last three DSU/Herb Blakely Invitational team title.
THEY'RE BACK: Five men's and three women's runners return back to the Trojan cross country team. Michael Hoffman, Andy Coy, Nic Penning, Andy Quenzer, Summer Bronson and Claire Beck will be seniors this year. Jacob Hemenway transfer from Northern State and will have two seasons of eligibility left. Stephanie Uher will be a junior this season after playing for the Trojan Volleyball team for the past two seasons. Thomas Ricket and Amber Wiebenga are the two sophomores on the team for DSU. The Trojans have seven freshmen on the team - Taylor Hauge, Steve Selchert, Jared Sutton, Jared Truman, Anastasia Asimakopoulos, Tara Ronke and Kayla Sveen.
COACHES' CORNER: Buzz Stevenson is the head coach for the Trojan cross country teams. He has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at Dakota State, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference (SDIC) Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains Athletic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year awards. Stevenson has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in cross country. He competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams. He holds numerous school records and was a two-time NAIA All-American athlete. Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference championship in cross country during the fall of 2009.

UP NEXT: Dakota State will be taking the men's team to the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, on Sept. 29. The race will feature quality teams from the Midwest region. The women's team will run in the DSU Trojan Day Parade 5K run on Sept. 29.
