VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) could not come up with an upset bid at No. 21-ranked Valley City State (N.D.) Wednesday evening in a North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference contest at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.  As the Trojans take a 56-54 lead, the Vikings closed the game with a 13-2 run in the final five minutes of the game for a 67-58 victory.

Dakota State's four-game winning streak came to an end and fell to 10-12 overall record and 4-3 NSAA conference record.  Valley City State improved to 17-6 overall record and 5-2 NSAA record.

With the Trojans leading at 22-20 midway in the first-half, the Vikings went on to score ten straight points to gain the biggest lead of the first-half at 30-22 with five minutes and forty-eight seconds on the clock.

DSU answered back with a pair of 3-pointers from Tanner Heiser and Brendon Boomsma to cut VCSU's lead to 30-28 with 2:05 remaining in the first-half.

Heiser stole the ball with less than five seconds left by the half-court and passed the ball to Boomsma for a lay-up as Dakota State reduced Valley City State's lead to 33-30 by halftime.

The Vikings shot 53.6 percent from the field in the first-half compared to the Trojans' 42.9 percent (12-of-28).

Valley City State opened up the second-half with a 7-1 scoring run for their biggest lead of the game at 40-31 with 15:50 remaining.

Dakota State staged an 18-9 scoring outburst to tie the game for the seventh time at 49-49 after a pair of free-throws by Justin Folkers with 7:53 on the clock.

Boomsma made a basket with 6:58 remaining for a 53-51 DSU lead, their first lead since 2-0 with 19:52 on the clock in the first-half (Kyle Kilgore's two free-throws).

With the tenth tie recorded at 56-56, VCSU held the Trojans scoreless in the span of 4:46 to secure the victory.  The Vikings outscored DSU 34-28 in the final twenty minutes of the game.

Kilgore led Dakota State with a game-high 19 points on his 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.  Boomsma added 14 points.  Heiser scored 10 points off the bench.  Ian Barse tallied eight points.

Kilgore grabbed nine rebounds for the Trojans.  Derek Meger, Barse and Folkers each added four rebounds.

Heiser dished out three assists and stole the ball three times for DSU.  Boomsma had two steals.

Jayden Ferguson scored 15 points (7-of-11 field goals shooting) for the Vikings.  Nygel Drury added 13 points.  Darryl Howell registered 11 points.  Ellwood Ellenson had 10 points.

Justyn Galloway earned nine board for VCSU.  Drury had six rebounds.  LJ Booth recorded six blocked shots in the game.

Howell and Nate Vieira each produced three assists for Valley City State.  Galloway recorded three steals.

VCSU shot 50 percent overall from the field (27-of-54) compared to DSU 36.2 percent (21-of-58).  The Trojans were 5-of-21 from the 3-point line (23.8 percent), while the Vikings were 2-of-11 3-pointers (18.2 percent).

Dakota State went to the free-throw line 18 times, making 13 free-throws (72.2 percent).  Valley City State was 11-of-15 free-throws (73.3 percent).

VCSU outrebounded DSU 40-26. 

The game featured 10 ties and 7 lead changes.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return home Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans host Mayville State (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association conference game at 7:30 p.m.  Parents' Night ceremony will be held prior to the game's warm-ups at around 8-minute mark.
