MADISON, S.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) took advantage of their 52.9 percent field shooting Saturday evening, recording a 68-58 North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference victory over Dakota State (S.D.) at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans struggled by shooting 36.7 percent from the field.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 10-13 and 4-4 NSAA conference record.  Mayville State improved to 13-8 overall record and 3-5 NSAA.

Adam Hofer drained a 3-pointer to open up a 3-0 lead for the Trojans with eighteen minutes and fifty-seven seconds on the clock.  The Comets answered back by scoring five straight points for their first lead of the game at 5-3 with 17:29 left in the first period.

Leading 15-12, the Comets went on to score ten straight points as they widen their lead to 25-12 with less than seven minutes to go before intermission.

MSU outscored DSU 21-11 in the final 10:24 of the first-half to grab a 36-23 halftime lead.

The Comets were 16-of-29 field goals in the first-half (55.2 percent), while the Trojans went 30 percent from the field (9-of-30).

Dakota State kicked off the second-half with a 14-7 run to cut Mayville State's lead to 43-37 with 15 minutes to go in the game.  DSU was 6-of-8 from the field during the scoring run.

Trailing 53-43, Tanner Heiser drained a pair of 3-pointers as the Trojans reduce their deficit by four points at 53-49 with 9:58 remaining. 

Up 62-58, Mayville State used a 6-0 run in the final 55 seconds of the game.  Darnell Landon made a lay-up, while Jamal Branco and Chuck Robinson each made a pair of free-throws to secure the game for the Comets.

MSU shot 50 percent from the field in the second-half (11-of-22) compared to DSU 43.3 percent (13-of-30).

Kyle Kilgore led the Trojans with 14 points.  Ian Barse and Heiser each added 11 points.  Derek Meger scored seven points off the bench.  Hofer tallied six points.

Taylor Zirbel and Barse each grabbed six rebounds for Dakota State.  Heiser added five reobunds.

Hesier dished out four assists for the Trojans.  Brendon Boomsma, Barse and Meger each added three assists.  Hofer stole the ball three times.  Kilgore, Zirbel and Barse each had two steals.

Robinson posted a double-double of 21 points and earned 13 rebounds for the Comets.  He was 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 free-throws.  Robinson had four blocked shots.  A.B. Najee added 14 points (5-of-6 field goals and 4-of-5 3-pointers).  Landon had 12 points.

Jordan Villebrun recorded eight rebounds for MSU.  Villebrun and Conor Quinn each had three assists.  Landon had three steals.

Mayville State made 27 baskets in 51 attempts compared to Dakota State 22 field goals in 60 attempts.  The Trojans were 8-of-25 from the 3-point line (32 percent), while the Comets were 4-of-8 3-pointers.

MSU was 10-of-12 free-throws (83.3 percent).  DSU struggled from the free-throw line, making six free-throws in 16 attempts (37.5 percent).

The Comets outrebounded the Trojans 41-29.  DSU outscored MSU 13-9 in second-chance points.

Both teams scored 20 points off turnovers in the game.  The Trojans' bench outscored Comets' bench 18-8.

Dakota State heads on the road Wednesday evening as they visit Jamestown (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association conference game.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D.  Mayville State stays on the road as they travel to Valley City State (N.D.) on the same night.
