GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· Third-seeded Dakota State (S.D.) (18-13 overall record) prepares for the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Postseason Championship Game Monday night as they host No. 4 seed Jamestown (N.D.) (17-11).

· Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. DSU Fieldhouse.  This will be the Trojans' sixth straight game at home, their seventh game in the last eight games being played at DSU Fieldhouse.  Winner of the NSAA Postseason championship game move to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament on March 9-15 in Point Lookout, Mo.

TROJANS SHARE NSAA REGULAR-SEASON TITLE

· DSU won back-to-back regular-season conference title after routing Dickinson State (N.D.) 83-51 on Feb. 20. 

· With the help from Presentation (S.D.) playing a spoiler at Valley City State (N.D.) after an 84-82 overtime victory on Feb. 20, the Trojans clinched a share of NSAA regular-season conference title with Bellevue (Neb.) and VCSU (11 points).

· It was the first time in DSU men's basketball team program history that they won a back-to-back conference regular-season title.

· It was the fourth conference regular-season title in DSU men's basketball team history (SDIC titles in 1967 and 1991 and NSAA in 2015).

TROJANS GO 2-0 IN NSAA TOURNAMENT

· Dakota State (S.D.) extended their winning streak to eight games after going 2-0 record at DSU Fieldhouse in the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Postseason Tournament.

· The red-hot Trojans shot a season-high 61.8 percent from the field and scored 64 points inside the paint in routing Waldorf (Iowa) 101-84 in the opening round of the conference tournament on Feb. 25.

· All five DSU players scored in double digits, led by Kyle Kilgore with 22 points on his 10-of-12 field goal shooting.  Derek Meger added 8-of-10 field goals for 18 points.  Ian Barse scored 16 points, while Adam Hofer had 13 points and 8 assists.  Tanner Heiser had a double-double of 12 points and dished out 11 assists.

· Taylor Zirbel scored 14 points (6-of-7 field goals) off the bench for the Trojans.  Meger grabbed eight rebounds.

· DSU made 42 baskets in 68 attempts while the Warriors were 33-of-69 field goals (47.8 percent). 

· Dakota State continued their 'red-hot' shooting on Feb. 27 with 53.1 percent from the field, rolling past No. 7 seed Mayville State (N.D.) 84-72 in the NSAA Postseason semifinals.  MSU posted a 73-62 upset over No. 2 seed Bellevue (Neb.) in the NSAA quarterfinals on Feb. 25.

· Meger powered the Trojans with a career-high 27 points—18 points coming from the second-half for DSU.  He was 12-of-16 from the field.  He also had grabbed nine rebounds.

· Hofer added 20 points, scoring 14 points in the first twenty minutes of the game for DSU.  He produced five assists.

· Trojan Kilgore posted his 12th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and collecting 13 rebounds.  Heiser had 16 points and produced six assists.

· Dakota State made 34 field goals in 64 attempts compared to Mayville State 29-of-66 field goals (43.9 percent).

· It was the second straight year that DSU defeated MSU in the NSAA Postseason semifinals.

BUILDING UP A DYNASTY AT DSU

· Monday's game will mark the fifth straight year in a conference championship game that feature both Dakota State (S.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.).  It's the first time in DSU men's basketball program history that the Trojans are appearing in the conference championship game for five consecutive seasons.

· The Trojans won back-to-back Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Postseason Tournament over the Jimmies in 2012 and 2013. 

· Jamestown won the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Postseason Championship game in 2014.

· DSU won the NSAA Postseason championship game in a 66-65 thriller in Jamestown, N.D. on March 3, 2015.

· Monday's winner will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. on March 9-15 on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).  The Trojans were at the national tournament three times in the last four years.

· DSU's head coach Gary Garner (119 wins) surpassed former Trojan head coach Brian McDermott with 117 wins for second-most wins as Dakota State head coach.

SIZZLING TROJANS IN FEBRUARY

· The Trojans are currently on their eight-game winning streak—all games in the month of February.  DSU tied the school record for the longest winning streak since 1990-91 season.

· DSU is averaging 86 points per game during their eight-game winning streak.

· Dakota State had won the last six games at DSU Fieldhouse.

TEAM LEADERS

· Points:  Kyle Kilgore—499 points (16.1 points per game)

· Field Goal Percentage:  Derek Meger—60.7 percent (150-of-247 field goals)—9th in the nation

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Brendon Boomsma—39.2 percent (51-of-130)

· Free-throw percentage:  Brendon Boomsma—91.8 percent (67-of-73 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—259 rebounds—19th in the nation (8.4 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—135 assists—28th in the nation (4.7 assists per game—28th in the nation)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—46 steals (1.6 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Kyle Kilgore—22 blocked shots (0.7 blocks per game)

3-TIME NSAA PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

· Kyle Kilgore was honored by the NSAA conference for the third straight week as its Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week honor.

· He averaged 23.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game for the Trojans last week.  He was 15-of-33 from the field and made 16-of-21 free-throws.

· Kilgore posted game-highs 27 points and 11 rebounds, including a 3-point play that put the Trojans up 87-86 with 18.3 seconds left.
