MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State's (S.D.) Gary Garner was selected as the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's Basketball Coach-of-the-Year, the conference's postseason awards were announced at the conclusion of the championship game Monday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The league coaches voted on the conference awards.

Garner guided his Trojans to back-to-back NSAA Men's Basketball regular-season and postseason titles, including a 79-65 NSAA conference postseason championship victory over Jamestown (N.D.) Monday.  He took his squads to five consecutive conference championship game appearances – all games against the Jimmies including the last three years in the NSAA conference – and recorded their fourth win in the last five conference championship games.

Dakota State also qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.  The Trojans, who were 10-13 overall record by the end of January, are currently on a school-record nine-game winning streak with an undefeated 9-0 record during the month of February.  The previous old record mark was in 1990-91 season when the Trojans had won eight consecutive games.

After the victory on Monday, Garner earned his 120th career win as Dakota State men's basketball head coach.  He surpassed former coach Brian McDermott (117 wins and current Southern Oregon head men's basketball coach) for the second-most wins in the DSU Trojan men's basketball record book.

Garner had recorded double digits victories in all seven years as Trojan men's basketball head coach.  In addition, the Trojans had recorded a winning home record at DSU Fieldhouse in each of those seven seasons.  DSU finished the season by completing their six-game home stand undefeated and had won seven straight home games.

He was named the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013, totaling three coach-of-the-year honors during his time at Dakota State.

DSU is 23-9 record (.719 winning percentage) during conference play since the North Star Athletic Association began in 2013-14.

Dakota State awaits to find out the pairings for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament, which begins next week in Point Lookout, Mo.  The live selection show is scheduled for Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. on the NAIA website (
