GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· The Dakota State University baseball team (0-0 overall record) opens up their 2016 season with a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

· The Trojans play in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) (1-3 overall record) with the first game set for 12 noon, followed by the second game at approximately 2:30 p.m.  The doubleheader will be played at the Riverside Park (Bob Tereshinski Stadium) in Yankton, S.D.

· Dakota State will play a total of nine games in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational from March 8-15.

TUCSON (ARIZ.) INVITATIONAL GAMES

· Dakota State (S.D.) will be playing a total of nine games in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games at Kino Sports Complex from March 8 through March 15.

· The Trojans will play a total of three doubleheaders and three nine-inning games during their stay in Arizona.

· DSU kicks off the invitational with a doubleheader versus William Penn (Iowa) on Tuesday March 8, followed by a nine-inning game versus Dordt (Iowa) next Wednesday evening, March 9.

· After taking a day off on March 10, the Trojans return back to action with a non-conference doubleheader versus Concordia (Neb.) on March 11.  Dakota State plays a nine-inning game against Ashford (Iowa) on March 12.

· The Trojans conclude the Tucson Invitational Games with a doubleheader versus Northwestern (Iowa) on March 14 and a single nine-inning game versus NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.) on March 15.

· Tucson Invitational Games have their own website on http://www.tigsports.com/baseball/.  The website included information on schedule/results, maps, fields, etc.

2015 SEASON/POSTSEASON RECAP

· Dakota State (S.D.) finished their 2015 season with an overall record of 15-36 and 9-11 record in the North Star Athletic Association conference play. 

· The Trojans finished fourth in the North Star Athletic Association conference standings, falling short to Valley City State (N.D.) and Mayville State (N.D.) in the postseason play in Dickinson, N.D. last season.

· Jake Harris was named to NSAA Baseball All-Conference First Team Designated Hitter for the Trojans in 2015.  He led DSU in three different categories—.403 batting average, .545 slugging percentage and drove in 37 runs (0.8 RBIs per game). 

· Harris was third in the DSU school record book for best batting average last season.  He was also sixth in most hits in a single season with 62.

· Three other DSU Trojans—Jordan Entrikin, Nick Serrata and Bryant Westra—were named to NSAA Baseball All-Conference Honorable Mention.  Jon Forster was named to NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athlete.

2016 DSU BASEBALL SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

· The 2016 DSU schedule included 48 games—with 17 games to be played at DSU's home field Flynn Field and 9 games to be played in Tucson, Ariz. as part of Tucson Invitational Games.

· The Trojans return back to the Midwest region as they play home-and-away series with Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The first doubleheader takes place in Sioux City, Iowa on March 19 and return back to Madison for another doubleheader on March 20. 

· The NSAA conference play begins on March 25-26 with a four-game series with Mayville State (N.D.).  Dakota State is slated to play a total of 24 NSAA conference games.

· DSU closes out the regular-season with a four-game NSAA series versus Waldorf (Iowa) on April 30 and May 1 at Flynn Field.

· The NSAA Postseason Conference Tournament kicks off on May 6 and runs through May 10 in Jamestown, N.D. and Valley City, N.D.

2016 DSU BASEBALL ROSTER BREAKDOWN

· The Trojan Baseball team have 29 players listed on their 2016 roster. 

· Dakota State (S.D.) have seven seniors on this year's squad.  They are:  Tony Ponica, Tyler Ratkie, Ian Barker, Luke Gassman, Jake Harris, Jamie Jorgensen and Tyler Pruszynski.

· DSU also have seven juniors on the team—Jose Lopez, Jake Ferdinand, Garrett Mullins, Taylor Boerger, Shiquing Santana, Dylan Colman and David Novak.

· Richard Sternberg, Connor Nagel, Brady Wauer, Garrison Collier and Travis Fleming are the sophomores on the Trojan Baseball team.

· DSU have 10 freshmen on the team.  They are Jalen Boyd, Jordan Hofer, Travis Kildow, Zach Sutera, Andrew Hesse, Jay Thaler, Trevor Pitsor, David Kirby, Jacob Arlt and Brad Frandsen.

· Scott Hortness is entering his sixth season as the head coach for Trojan Baseball squad.  He is assisted by Eric Hortness, who is entering his sixth straight season as an assistant coach and twelfth overall at DSU.

2016 DSU BASEBALL AT FLYNN FIELD

· Dakota State (S.D.) will play a pair of six-game home stand at Flynn Field, kicking off with the first home doubleheader versus Briar Cliff (Iowa) on March 20.

· The Trojans continues their home stand with a four-game NSAA series versus Mayville State (N.D.) on March 25-26.

· After playing 13 straight games on the road, DSU returns home for a single nine-inning game versus Dordt (Iowa) on April 11.

· Dakota State closes out their regular-season schedule by playing 10 of the last 11 games at Flynn Field.

NSAA BASEBALL COACHES' PRESEASON POLL

· Dakota State (S.D.) edged out Viterbo (Wis.) to finish sixth in the NSAA Baseball Coaches' Preseason Poll.  The Trojans tallied 46 points in the poll, while the V-Hawks scored 45 points to finish seventh.

· Bellevue (Neb.) is the unanimous favorite to win the 2016 NSAA Baseball league title with 10 first-place votes, voted by the league coaches.

· Jamestown (N.D.) finished second, followed by Mayville State (N.D.) third, Valley City State (N.D.) fourth and Dickinson State (N.D.) fifth.  Waldorf (Iowa) was predicted to finish eighth, Presentation (S.D.) ninth and Winnipeg (Manitoba) tenth.

· There will be two automatic bids for the NSAA conference to represent in the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round, which is held on May 16-19 at nine different sites announced by the NAIA national office.

· The NSAA regular-season conference winner and the postseason conference tournament winner will earn a trip to the national tournament.

· The NSAA Baseball conference postseason tournament will be a double-elimination format, with being held in Jamestown, N.D. and Valley City, N.D. in May.
