YANKTON, S.D. – The Dakota State University baseball team kicked off their 2016 season Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park (Bob Tereshinski Stadium), posting a pair of shutout victories over in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.).  The Trojans won the first game by the score of 4-0, followed by the second game with a score of 2-0.

It was the first time since Feb. 18, 2012 when the Trojans won the season opener.  It was also DSU's first time since 2006 when they earned back-to-back shutout victories.  Dakota State is 2-0 overall record, while Mount Marty fell to 1-5 overall record.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Mount Marty (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

After a scoreless first inning, the Trojans got on board first in the top second inning.  Ian Barker led off the inning by reaching third base after a defensive error by the Lancers.  Jordan Hofer hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Barker to give DSU their first lead at 1-0.

Dakota State extended their lead in the top third frame with a pair of runs.  Tony Poncia and Jake Harris hit back-to-back singles with one out (Poncia advanced to third base after Harris' single).  Jamie Jorgensen produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Poncia to put the Trojans up 2-0.

Barker added an RBI double to score Jalen Boyd – courtesy runner for Harris – to extend DSU's lead to 3-0 in the top third.

Dakota State prevented Mount Marty to score in the bottom fourth inning.  The Lancers left two runners on base after Bo Howard and Ethan Lynn.

DSU made it 4-0 after Harris hit an RBI single to score Jose Lopez in the top seventh inning.

The Lancers left one runner on base as the Trojans secured the victory in the final inning recording three strikeouts by DSU's Richard Sternberg.

Harris was 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles and an RBI for Dakota State.  Barker and Hofer added a double and an RBI.  Lopez, Poncia and Jorgensen each had a hit.  Jorgensen, Barker and Hofer each produced an RBI. 

Skyler Carey, Travis Neumann, Howard and Lynn each had a single for the Lancers.

DSU outhit MMC 8-4 in the game.  The Trojans left seven runners on base while the Lancers had five runners left on base.

Taylor Boerger (W, 1-0) earned his first victory of the season on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for five innings and gave up three hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.  Sternberg (S, 1) earned a save in two scoreless innings in relief.  He allowed one hit and struck out five MMC's batters.

Dustin Hoffman (L, 0-1) took the looks in three innings of work for Mount Marty.  He allowed three runs (one unearned) on four hits. Alex Mogensen pitched three scoreless innings in relief and recorded four strikeouts.  Alex Arnold tossed the seventh inning and allowed one run on three hits.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 2, Mount Marty (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

The Trojans and Lancers went through four scoreless innings in the second game of the doubleheader.

DSU scored its first run of the game in the top fifth frame.  Dylan Colman led off the inning reached on base by MMC's defensive miscue.  He swiped to second base with one out.  Jacob Artl hit a single to advance Colman to third base.

Tyler Ratkie hit an RBI ground out to score Colman as the Trojans gained a 1-0 lead in the top fifth inning.

The Lancers could not convert their scoring chances in the bottom fifth inning as they left two runners on base.

Dakota State added a run in the top sixth inning.  Poncia led off the Trojans with a walk and advanced to second base on MMC's wild pitch.  Harris hit a single to advance Poncia to third base.  Poncia scored after Jorgensen was grounded into double play as DSU extended their lead to 2-0.

DSU secured another shutout victory after the Lancers went three-and-out in the bottom seventh inning.

Poncia, Harris, Jorgensen and Hofer each had a hit for the Trojans.  Ratkie had an RBI.  Colman recorded a stolen base.

Neumann was the lone Lancer batter that recorded a hit in the game.

DSU had five hits compared to MMC one hit.

Connor Nagel (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing five innings on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He limited MMC to one hit and recorded three strikeouts.  Brady Wauer pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Dakota Stone started the game for Mount Marty as he pitched four scoreless innings.  He gave up three hits.  Derek Miller (L, 0-2) recorded the loss as he gave up a run in the fifth inning.  Josh Teichroew worked the sixth inning, giving up a run and a hit.  Brody Ries pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Dakota State kicks off their nine-game schedule in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Tuesday as they play a doubleheader versus William Penn (Iowa) at 10 a.m. (Central Standard Time).  The game will be held at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
