GAME NOTES (PDF) - BRACKETS - FAN INFORMATION FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

THIS WEEK

· The Dakota State University men's basketball team (19-13) is set to make their fourth trip to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in the last five years this week in Point Lookout, Mo.

· The Trojans, seeded No. 8 in the Naismith bracket, will take on the top overall and No. 1 seed Saint Francis (Ind.) (29-4) on Wednesday afternoon.  Tip-off is set for 1:45 p.m. at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).

TROJANS WIN NSAA POSTSEASON TITLE

· Dakota State (S.D.) never trailed in the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Postseason Championship game on Feb. 29.  The Trojans claimed back-to-back tournament championships with a 79-65 home victory over Jamestown (N.D.), concluding their home schedule with a winning record for the seventh straight year (10-6 record) and won their seventh straight home game.

· At 44-44, the Trojans went on a 7-1 spurt and never looked back for the victory.

· Tanner Heiser had a career-high 25 points.  He also recorded eight rebounds and six assists.  Kyle Kilgore registered a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Ian Barse had nine points, followed by Taylor Zirbel with eight points and Adam Hofer six points.

· DSU shot 46.6 percent from the field compared to UJ 40.3 percent.  The Trojans were 7-of-20 from the 3-point line while the Jimmis were held to 4-of-20 3-pointers.

DSU RECEIVES NUMEROUS NSAA HONORS

· Dakota State (S.D.) received numerous honors and postseason awards from the North Star Athletic Association Conference, announced after the conclusion of the championship game won by the Trojans on Feb. 29.

· Two Trojans were selected to NSAA Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams.  Kyle Kilgore was named to First Team All-Conference, while Tanner Heiser was picked as Second Team All-Conference.

· Kilgore was voted as NSAA Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player and Newcomer-of-the-Year by the league's coaches.  He had posted 13 double-doubles during the season and leads the team with 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the Trojans.

· The NSAA conference's head coaches had voted DSU's Gary Garner as its Coach-of-the-Year award.  He surpassed former Trojan men's basketball head coach Brian McDermott (current Southern Oregon head coach) for the second most coaching victories as DSU head coach.  Garner had totaled 120 wins through 7 years, while McDermott had 117 win during his time at DSU in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

· The NSAA All-Conference teams and postseason awards are voted by the league head coaches.

NAIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW

· The NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament is broken down into four separate brackets called Naismith, Duer, Liston and Cramer.  Three teams from the NSAA conference are in the national tournament.

· Each of the brackets are seeded No. 1 through No. 8.  A total of 32 teams are in the national tournament.  The final NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll are used to determine the at-large bid.

· DSU received the NSAA's automatic bid after winning the postseason conference tournament.  It was the second straight year that DSU received the NSAA's automatic bid.

· The Trojans had faced six teams that qualified for the national tournament during the regular-season.

ABOUT SAINT FRANCIS (IND.)

· Saint Francis (Ind.) qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament after winning the Crossroads League tournament title with an 81-80 thriller over Indiana Wesleyan.  The Cougars won 70-63 over Marian (Ind.) in the quarterfinals and Goshen (Ind.) 80-76 in the semifinals.

· Saint Francis is currently ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Final poll with an overall record of 29-4.  The Cougars' four losses are to Cincinnati Christian (Ohio), Cornerstone (Mich.), Huntington (Ind.) and Bethel (Ind.).

· The Cougars are on a 12-game winning streak since their last loss to Bethel (Ind.) on Jan. 19.  Saint Francis finished their Crossroads League conference schedule with a 16-2 record.

TROJANS CARRYING NINE-GAME WINNING STREAK INTO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

· Dakota State (S.D.) broke a new school record for most consecutive victories with nine after winning the NSAA's Tournament title on Feb. 29.  The previous old record was set in 1990-91 when the Trojans had won eight straight games.

· After starting the season 6-11 overall record, DSU won 13 times in the last 15 games.  The Trojans finished the month of February with a 9-0 record.

· Dakota State had scored over 80 points seven times during the current nine-game winning streak.  The Trojans scored a NSAA Tournament record 101 points in 101-84 quarterfinals victory over Waldorf (Iowa).

· DSU shared the NSAA conference regular-season title for the second straight year.

TEAM LEADERS

· Points:  Kyle Kilgore—513 points (16.0 points per game)

· Field Goal Percentage:  Derek Meger—61.4 percent (156-of-254 field goals)—6th in the nation

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Brendon Boomsma—38.6 percent (51-of-132)

· Free-throw percentage:  Brendon Boomsma—92.0 percent (69-of-75 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—271 rebounds—17th in the nation (8.5 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—141 assists—26th in the nation (4.7 assists per game—26th in the nation)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—47 steals (1.6 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Kyle Kilgore—25 blocked shots (0.8  blocks per game)

HEISER EARNS NSAA PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

· Tanner Heiser was tabbed as the final NSAA Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week.

· Heiser averaged 17.7 points, 7.7 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game as the Trojans went 3-0 record in the NSAA Postseason Tournament.

· He posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists in 101-84 victory over Waldorf (Iowa).  He also poured in a career-high 25 points in 79-65 victory over Jamestown (N.D.).
