TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) baseball team kicked off their nine-game schedule in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Tuesday at Kino Sports Complex.  The Trojans could overcome William Penn's (Iowa) fast start, posting a doubleheader sweep over DSU by the scores of 11-1 and 9-1.

Dakota State fell to 2-2 overall record.  William Penn raised their overall record to 6-4.

Game 1 – William Penn (Iowa) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

WPU opened up the game with four runs scored, highlighted by Johnny Valdez's RBI double and Javier Gonzalez and William Vazquez each with an RBI single for 4-0 lead.

The Trojans got on board in the bottom second inning.  Jamie Jorgensen led off with a double, followed by Dylan Colman's single to advance Jorgensen to third base with one out.  Garrett Mullins recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Jorgensen as DSU cut Statesmen's lead to 4-1.

William Penn scored three more runs in the top third innings, thanks to three straight hits to start the inning with a double by Valdez, a single by Cory Russel and a double by Gonzalez.

The Statesmen scored twice in the top fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory over the Trojans.

Jordan Hofer went 2-of-3 at the plate for the Trojans.  Jorgensen and Tyler Ratkie each added a double.  Mullins registered a single and an RBI.  Colman had a hit.

Russell and Gonzalez each tallied three hits for WPU.  Valdez produced two doubles.  Vazquez collected three RBIs.  Gonzalez and Robert Phiakeo each had two RBIs.

The Statesmen outhit the Trojans 15-6 in the game.  William Penn left ten runners on base while Dakota State had four runners left on base.

Brady Wauer (L, 0-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU.  He allowed seven runs (three unearned) on eight hits.  He struck out four WPU batters.  Trevor Pitsor worked for 1 2/3 innings in relief, giving up two runs on five hits.  David Novak tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on one hit.  David Kirby worked a scoreless seventh inning.

Logan Overly (W, 1-0) earned a complete game victory for WPU.  He yielded one run on six hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.

Game 2 – William Penn (Iowa) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

The Statesmen exploded for seven runs in the first four innings to grab a 7-0 lead and never look back in the second game of the doubleheader.  William Penn scored three times in the first inning, two runs in the bottom second inning, and a run scored each in the third and fourth innings.

The Trojans ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the top sixth frame.  The Trojans reached on base by a walk four times by Jordan Arlt, Jay Thaler, Jake Ferdinand and Tyler Ratkie.  Ratkie recorded an RBI walk to score Arlt as DSU trimmed WPU's lead to 7-1.

WPU scored twice in the bottom sixth inning to complete a doubleheader sweep over DSU.

Jose Lopez had a single and swiped one base for the Trojans.  Colman and Ferdinand each recorded a single.  Ferdinand reached on base twice by a walk.  Lopez, Jorgensen, Arlt, Thaler and Ratkie each had a walk.

Phiakeo went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs for the Statesmen.  York added a double, single and two RBIs.  Dominik Sawyer, Valdez and Vazquez each had a hit.

WPU recorded 12 hits in the game compared to DSU 3 hits.  The Statesmen left ten runners on base while the Trojans had nine runners left on base.

Richard Sternberg (L, 0-1) recorded the loss as he pitched three innings for Dakota State.  He gave up six runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  Ian Barker worked in the fourth inning and allowed one run on two hits.  Mullins tossed one scoreless inning.  Tyler Pruszynski pitched in the sixth inning and gave up two runs.

Marshall Siordia (W, 1-0) gained the victory on the pitching mound for William Penn, tossing 5 1/3 innings.  He gave up one run and struck out eight DSU's batters.  T.J. Murphy worked for one out.  Anthony York closed the game by pitching 1 1/3 shutout innings.

Dakota State continues their action Wednesday evening as they face Dordt (Iowa) in a single nine-inning game.  First pitch is set for 7 p.m. (Central Time) at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
