TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) baseball team could not stop Concordia's (Neb.) winning streak Friday in the Tucson (Ariz.) Baseball Invitational at Kino Sports Complex.  The Bulldogs scored three times in the top seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie ballgame for a 7-4 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.  CUNE won the second game 7-2 to extend their winning streak to six games.

Dakota State fell to 3-4 overall record.  Concordia lifted their overall record to 12-10.

Game 1 – Concordia (Neb.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

The Trojans grabbed the first lead of the game in the bottom half of the opening inning.  Jake Harris produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Jordan Hofer, who led off DSU with a triple.  Dakota State led the game 1-0 after the first inning.

Concordia overtook the lead in the top second inning with three runs scored.  Christian Montero started the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.  After Tyler Nelson reached on base by DSU's defensive error, Jacob Adams hit an RBI double to score Nelson for CUNE 2-1 lead.  Logan Ryan added an RBI single to score Adams to extend Bulldogs' lead to 3-1.

DSU answered back with two runs scored in the bottom third to knot the game at 3-3.  Tyler Ratkie reached on base by a fielder's choice and advanced to second base after Hofer's walk.  Ratkie and Hofer each advanced one base after Jose Lopez's ground out.  Harris followed up with a 2-RBI single to score Ratkie and Hofer to record the second tie of the game.

Adams reached on base by a walk in the top fourth inning for CUNE.  He advanced to second base after DSU's defensive error and went to third base after a wild pitch.  Ryan recorded bases-on-ball while Adams stole for home to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

Poncia drilled a lead-off triple in the bottom fourth frame for Dakota State.  Ian Barker registered an RBI sacrifice fly as the Trojans tied the game at 4-4.

Both teams were unable to score in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Bulldogs exploded for three runs in the top seventh inning to grab a three-run lead, despite the Trojans committing three defensive errors.

Concordia ended the game by recording a double play, securing the victory over DSU.

Harris was 1-of-2 at the plate with three RBIs for the Trojans.  Poncia and Hofer each had a triple.  Lopez and Barker each had a hit.  Barker produced an RBI.

Montero had a home run and an RBI for the Bulldogs.  Ryan Fesmire had two singles.  Kaleb Geiger, Taylor Dudley, Nelson, Adams, Christian Meza and Logan Ryan each had a hit. 

CUNE recorded nine hits in the game compared to DSU five hits.  The Trojans committed five defensive errors while the Bulldogs did not record a defensive miscue.

Dakota State turned into three double plays in the game compared to Concordia one.

The Bulldogs left four runners on bases while the Trojans had three runners left on base.

David Kirby started the game on the pitching mound for DSU, tossing six innings.  He gave up four runs (two unearned) on eight hits.  Taylor Boerger (L, 1-1) took the loss as he worked the seventh inning.  He allowed three runs (two unearned) on one hit.

Cole Jackson pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs.  He allowed four runs on three hits.  Josh Prater (W, 1-0) earned the victory after working for 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.  Josue Melchor (S, 1) earned the save after pitching a shutout seventh inning.

Game 2 – Concordia (Neb.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

Dakota State could not hold on to their 2-0 early lead in the second game of the doubleheader as the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered runs for the victory.

Lopez reached on base by a walk with one out in the opening inning.  He advanced to second base after Barker's single.  Jamie Jorgensen produced an RBI single to score Lopez for a 1-0 DSU lead.  Poncia added an RBI single to score Barker to expand Trojans' lead to 2-0.

Concordia exploded for three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.  The Bulldogs opened up with a bases loaded situation with one out and Taylor Dudley hit a 2-RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.  CUNE made it 3-2 after Nelson hit an RBI single.

The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom fifth inning for a 4-3 lead, after recording extra-base hits by Dudley with a triple and Johnny May with a double.

Montero belted a 3-run home run in the sixth inning for CUNE 7-2 lead.

The Trojans went three-and-out in the seventh inning as the Bulldogs earned their sixth straight victory.

Jorgensen went 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles and an RBI for DSU.  Poncia added two hits and an RBI.  Jake Ferdinand had a triple.  Richard Sternberg and Barker each had a hit.   

Montero recorded a home run and three RBIs for the Bulldogs.  Dudley added a triple, single and two RBIs.  Alex Cargin had two hits.

CUNE tallied nine hits in the game compared to DSU eight hits.  The Bulldogs left nine runners on base while the Trojans recorded eight runners on base.

Trevor Pitsor (L, 0-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.  Connor Nagel tossed the sixth inning and gave up three runs on two hits.

Taylor Bickel (W, 3-1) notched the victory for Concordia.  He pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.  Tanner Wauhob worked for 2 1/3 scoreless inning and gave up a hit.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Saturday evening at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson.  The Trojans face Ashford (Iowa) in a nine-inning game at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time).
