TUCSON, Ariz. – Trailing 6-0 after four innings Saturday evening at Kino Sports Complex as part of Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational, the Dakota State University (S.D.) baseball team outscored Ashford (Iowa) 12-2 in the final five innings of the game to earn a 12-8 victory.  The Trojans exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory.

DSU moved back to .500 with an overall record of 4-4.  Ashford fell to 2-14 overall record.

The Saints earned the first lead of the game in the bottom first inning.  Colton Christensen reached on base by Trojans' defensive error.  Spencer Pfeiff – courtesy runner for Christensen – advanced to second base by a balk committed by Jamie Jorgensen.  Lucas Pattison hit a single to move Pfeiff to third base.  Jean Carlos Peralta recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Pfeiff to give AU a 1-0 lead.

Ashford made it 4-0 in the bottom third inning after Peter Ruiz's RBI single, followed by Jason German's 2-RBI single.

AU added two more runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.  Pattison recorded a double, followed by Peralta's walk and Kevin Silva's single to set up a bases loaded situation with one out.  Ruiz had an RBI walk to score Pattison to expand Saints' lead to 5-0.  Ashford made it a six-run lead after German's single to score Peralta.

Dakota State ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the top fifth frame.  Dylan Colman led off with a single, followed by Garrett Mullins with a walk.  Tyler Ratkie reached safely on first base on a fielder's choice while Colman advanced to third base and Mullins was forced out at second base.  Jordan Hofer produced an RBI single to score Colman, trimming AU's lead to 6-1.

The Trojans plated four more runs in the top half of the seventh inning.  Colman started the seventh inning with a walk.  Mullins reached on base by a walk.  Ratkie recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Colman and Mullins one base.  Hofer recorded base-on-balls to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.  Jalen Boyd earned an RBI walk to score Colman as DSU reduced their deficit to 6-2.

Dakota State cut Saints' lead to 6-3 after Jake Harris' RBI sacrifice fly to score Mullins.  Jamie Jorgensen reached on base after Ashford's defensive miscue, allowing Hofer and Boyd to score as DSU trail by one run at 6-5.

The Trojans exploded for seven runs in the top eighth inning – all by two outs.  Ian Barker started the inning by reaching the base caused by Ashford's defensive error.  Colman added a single and advanced Barker to second base.  After a pitching change by AU, Mullins recorded a sacrifice bunt to put Barker on third base and Colman to second base.

Hofer produced a two-out RBI single to score Barker to tie the game at 6-6 in the top eighth (advanced Colman to third base).  After Hofer swiped to second base, Boyd reached first base by a walk. 

The next three DSU batters reached safely after Harris' walk and back-to-back hit-by-pitches on Jorgensen and Tony Poncia to extend DSU's lead to 9-6. 

Barker reached on base for the second time in the eighth inning by AU's defensive miscue, allowing Harris, Jorgensen and Poncia to score.  DSU's lead had grew to 12-6.

Ashford scored twice in the bottom eighth inning to trim Trojans' lead to 12-8.

Dakota State secured the victory after the Saints left three bases in the final inning.

Harris had a double and two RBIs for DSU.  Hofer and Colman each added two singles.  Jose Lopez recorded a single.  Colman scored three times.  Hofer and Boyd each had two runs scored.  Hofer had two RBIs.

Hofer, Boyd, Harris, Jorgensen, Colman and Mullins each reached on base by a walk twice.  Jorgensen and Hofer each swiped two bases.

Pattison tallied a double, three singles and an RBI for the Saints.  German added three singles and three RBIs.  Patrick Pinlac had three singles.  Ruiz and Jordan Kight each had a hit.

Ashford outhit Dakota State 16-6 in the game.  The Trojans reached on base by a walk 13 times compared to Saints' 6 times.

AU left 19 runners on base while DSU had 10 runners on base.

Jorgensen started the game for Dakota State.  He worked the first three innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on six hits.  Tyler Pruszynski tossed the fourth inning and gave up two runs on three hits.  Luke Gassman pitched two scoreless innings, yielding two hits.  David Kirby (W, 1-0) came in the seventh inning and pitched three innings in relief.  He allowed two runs on five hits.  Each Pruszynski and Kirby recorded three strikeouts.

Kane Klais was the starting pitcher on the mound for the Saints, working for 6 1/3 innings.  He gave up five runs (three unearned) on four hits.  He allowed eight walks and recorded five strikeouts.  Pattison (L, 0-2) worked for 2/3-plus innings, including giving up two unearned runs in the top eighth inning.  Peralta worked the last two innings in relief and gave up five unearned runs on one hit.  He gave up five walks.

Dakota State will be off on Sunday and return back to action on Monday as they play in a doubleheader versus Northwestern (Iowa).  The games will be held at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson.
