TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) raced to a 7-0 lead Tuesday at Kino Sports Complex, as the Trojans knocked off NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.) with a 12-7 victory to conclude their week-long Tucson (Ariz.) Baseball Invitational.  DSU finished with a 3-6 record in the invitational.

Dakota State bounced back in the winning column after dropping a pair of games to Northwestern (Iowa) Monday, raising their overall record to 5-6.  Northern State – coached by former Trojan Baseball head coach Dean Berry – fell to 5-4 overall record.

Ian Barker belted a home run with one out to give Trojans a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.  Jake Harris followed up with a double.  Tony Poncia added an RBI single to score Harris to extend DSU's lead to 2-0 with two outs (Poncia advanced to second base on the same play).

Dakota State made it 3-0 after Dylan Colman produced an RBI single to score Poncia in the first inning.

The Trojans exploded for four more runs in the top second frame.  Jake Ferdinand hit a double with one out and advanced to third base after Jordan Hofer's single.  Barker drilled a 2-RBI triple to score Ferdinand and Hofer as DSU's lead grew to 5-0.

Barker added a run after Harris' RBI single to put the Trojans up 6-0 in the second inning.  Jamie Jorgensen recorded a walk and Poncia hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation.  Colman was hit-by-pitch and collected an RBI to score Harris as Dakota State maintains a seven-run lead.

The Wolves plated two runs in the bottom second frame.  Lucas Lorenz led off with a triple.  Ben Allen hit an RBI single to score Lorenz for NSU's first run of the game. 

After the Trojans recorded a double play in the bottom second, the Wolves added a run to cut DSU's lead to 7-2.  Patrick Leary reached on base by a walk, followed by Mikey Barreneche's RBI triple to score Leary.

Ashton Williamson tallied a 2-RBI single in the bottom third inning as NSU trimmed Trojans' lead to 7-4.

Dakota State scored once in the top fourth inning, thanks to back-to-back hit-by-pitch to Jorgensen and Poncia with one out to set up a scoring opportunity.  Colman added a single to for a bases loaded situation.  Jose Lopez registered an RBI single to score Jorgensen as DSU extended their lead to 8-4.

The Wolves scored three times in the bottom half of the fourth inning, highlighted by Schmidt and Matt Stubbs back-to-back RBI double.  Lorenz followed up with an RBI single to score Stubbs as Northern State reduced DSU's lead to 8-7.

DSU answered back in the top fifth inning after scoring three runs – all runs scored with two outs – to widen their lead by four runs.  Ferdinand started the inning with a walk.  Harris hit a two-out single to advance Ferdinand to second base.  Jorgensen was hit-by-pitch for the second time in the game and set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.

Poncia reached on base caused by NSU's defensive error, allowing Ferdinand to score for DSU's 9-7 lead in the top fifth.  Colman added an RBI walk to score Harris, while Lopez earned an RBI hit-by-pitch to score Jorgensen as DSU's lead jumped to 11-7.

The Trojans made it 12-7 in the top sixth after a run scored.  Ferdinand began the inning with a walk.  He advanced to second base by NSU's defensive miscue.  Barker recorded a single to advance Ferdinand to third base.  Harris hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ferdinand as DSU gained a five-run lead.

Northern State could not convert their scoring chances in the bottom sixth as they left three runners on base.

Both teams were unable to score in the final three innings as the Trojans secured the win.

Barker was 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run, triple, single and tallied three RBIs for Dakota State.  He swiped one base.  Harris added a double, two singles and two RBIs.  He scored three runs.  Poncia had three singles and two RBIs.  Colman collected two hits and three RBIs.  Lopez had a single and two RBIs.  Ferdinand recorded a hit, scored three times and walked twice. 

Barreneche went perfect the plate for Northern State, going 4-for-4 with a triple, double, two singles and an RBI.  Schmidt and Stubbs each had three hits and an RBI.  Lorenz had a triple and a single.  Williamson recorded a hit and two RBIs.

NSU had 16 hits in the game compared to DSU 15 hits.  The Wolves left 13 runners on base while the Trojans left 12 runners on base.

Garrison (W, 2-0) tossed the first three innings on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He gave up four runs (two unearned) on five hits.  He recorded three strikeouts.  David Kirby worked 1 1/3 innings in relief and allowed three runs on six hits.  Tyler Pruszynski tossed the final 4 2/3 innings, holding NSU scoreless.  He gave up five hits and struck out four Wolves' batters.

Cody Vandever started the game for Northern State.  He gave up seven runs on nine hits in two innings of work.  Andrew Nichols (L, 0-1) recorded the loss as he threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (two unearned) on three hits.  Erick Cervenka gave up an unearned run in the fifth inning.  Dillon Lee tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run on one hit.  Luke Chevalier worked the last two innings and limited the Trojans to two hits.

The Wolves' pitchers gave up a combined five hit-by-pitch in the game.

Dakota State returns back in the Midwest this weekend as they play home-and-away series with Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The Trojans will be making a visit in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff.

Both BCU and DSU will play again for another doubleheader at Flynn Field on Sunday at 2 p.m.
