TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) baseball team returned back to action Monday as they faced Northwestern (Iowa) in a doubleheader at Kino Sports Complex as part of Tucson (Ariz.) Baseball Invitational.  The Trojans' comeback from a 10-run deficit fell short in the first game as the Red Raiders held on to a 14-13 victory.  NWIA won the second game by the score of 15-4 to complete the doubleheader sweep.

DSU fell to 4-6 overall record while NWIA improved to 7-10 overall record.

Game 1 – Northwestern (Iowa) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 13 – FINAL

The Red Raiders racked up a total of 10 runs in the opening inning for a 10-0 lead.  NWIA tallied seven hits in the inning.

Dakota State answered back in the top second frame by plating nine run, cutting NWIA's lead to 10-9.  There were a total of four hits with three coming from extra-base hits (Jake Harris' triple, Jamie Jorgensen's double and Tony Poncia's triple).  The Trojans also reached on base with a pair of walks (Poncia and Ian Barker) and a pair of hit-by-pitch (Dylan Colman, Garrett Mullins).

Northwestern hit four consecutive singles to score twice with two outs in the bottom third inning, extending their lead to 12-9.  Zach Cortese and Grant Lang hit back-to-back singles, followed by Collin McBride and Christian Hamett with back-to-back RBI singles as NWIA's lead grew by three runs.

The Red Raiders scored one run each in the bottom fourth and fifth innings to expand their lead to 14-9.

DSU scored twice in the top fifth inning.  Tyler Ratkie reached on base by a walk.  Jose Lopez hit a two-out RBI double to score Ratkie to reduce Trojans' deficit to 14-10.  Harris followed up with an RBI single to bring Lopez home as the Trojans trail 14-11.

Dakota State scored two runs in the top half of the sixth inning.  Jacob Arlt registered an RBI double to score Colman, who led off the inning with a single.  After Ratkie was hit-by-pitch followed by Jordan Hofer's walk, Lopez recorded an RBI to score Arlt to cut NWIA's lead to 14-13 before entering the bottom sixth inning.

The Trojans could not complete their comeback as they left one runner on base in the final inning, sealing the victory for the Red Raiders.

Harris was 4-of-5 at the plate, collecting two triples, two singles and produced three RBIs for Dakota State.  Arlt added two hits and two RBIs.  Lopez had a double and two RBIs.  Jorgensen earned two hits and an RBI.  Hofer, Poncia and Mullins each recorded an RBI.

Sean Geelan went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, three singles and two RBIs for Northwestern.  Casey Guthmiller, Cortese, Lang and Hamett each added two hits.  Cortese recorded a game-high four RBIs. 

NWIA tallied 16 hits in the game compared to DSU 12 hits.  The Trojans left nine runners on base while the Red Raiders had eight runners on base.

Richard Sternberg (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU.  He worked for 1/3 inning in the opening inning and allowed 10 runs (two unearned) on six hits.  Trevor Pitsor tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up two runs on six hits.  Luke Gassman pitched three innings and gave up two runs on four hits.  Both Pitsor and Gassman each recorded two strikeouts.

Colton Patterson started the game for NWIA, working for one-plus inning.  He allowed six runs on two hits and gave up three walks.  Tanner Ortlund (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing four innings in relief.  He gave up seven runs (one unearned) on eight hits.  Coltin Collins (S, 1) gained his first save of the season, working two scoreless innings and limited DSU to one hit.

Game 2 – Northwestern (Iowa) 15, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

Dakota State tied the game in the opening inning, but could not overcome Northwestern's offensive explosion in the second inning.

The Red Raiders earned the first lead of the game at 1-0.  Cortese recorded a two-out single, followed by Lang's RBI double to score Cortese.

DSU answered back with a run score in the bottom first frame.  Lopez led off the Trojans with a walk.  He advanced to second base after Poncia's ground out to second base.  Harris hit an RBI single to score Lopez, knotting the game at 1-1.

NWIA exploded for eight runs with seven hits in the top second inning, breaking the 1-1 tie into a 9-1 lead.  The Red Raiders added four runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning as their lead grew to 14-1.

Northwestern scored once in the top seventh inning for a 15-1 lead, but the Trojans scored three times in the bottom frame to complete the final score at 15-4.

Travis Fleming went perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and walked once for DSU.  Jay Thaler added a single and a run scored.  Jalen Boyd, Jake Ferdinand and Harris each had an RBI.

Hamett was 4-of-4 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored for NWIA.  Cortese, Lang, McBride, and Christian Stekl each added two hits.  Guthmiller, Sean Geelan, Stekl and Colin Sanbulte each had two RBIs.

The Red Raiders outhit the Trojans 17-4 in the game.  Both teams left six runners on base.

Brady Wauer (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound after pitching 1 2/3 innings for DSU.  He gave up nine runs (seven unearned) on seven hits.  Mullins worked for 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  David Novak pitched 3 2/3 innings, yielding two runs on three hits.

Colin Pennings (W, 1-0) earned the victory for NWIA.   He pitched six innings and allowed one run on four hits.  Chase Davis worked for one out in the seventh inning and gave up three runs (one unearned).  Nick Stimson pitched the last two outs of the seventh inning.

Dakota State looks to finish the Tucson Invitational on a high note Tuesday.  The Trojans take on NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.), who is coached by former DSU's head coach Dean Berry, in a nine-inning game.  First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. at Kino Sports Complex.
