SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota State University baseball team returned back to the Midwest region – after playing nine games in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational – for a non-conference doubleheader at Bishop Mueller Field Sunday afternoon versus Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The Chargers kicked off the home-and-away series with a doubleheader sweep over the Trojans – 5-4 in eight innings and 9-6.

Dakota State fell to 5-8 overall record.  Briar Cliff extended their winning streak to six games and improved their overall record to 12-11.

Game 1 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL/8 innings

Austin Kopacz hit an RBI single to give the Chargers their first lead of the game at 1-0 in the bottom second inning.

BCU added a run in the bottom fourth, thanks to Chase Hernandez's lead-off double.  Alex Colegrove followed up with a single to advance Hernandez to third base.  Kopacz produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hernandez to extend Briar Cliff's lead to 2-0.

Dakota State snapped their scoreless skid with two runs scored in the top fifth.  Dylan Colman opened the fifth inning with a walk, followed by Garrett Mullins' single (Colman advanced to second).  Tyler Ratkie recorded a sacrifice to advance Colman to third and Mullins to second.

Colman scored DSU's first run of the game after a wild pitch by BCU in the top fifth frame (Mullins.  Shiquing Santana hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Mullins to tie the game at 2-2.

Jake Erichsen smashed a solo home run as the Chargers regained their lead at 3-2 in the bottom fifth.

The Chargers' lead grew to 4-2 after Scott Morton's lead-off home run in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

The Trojans stormed back in the top seventh inning to knot the game with two runs scored.   Jose Lopez, pinch hitting for Mullins, started the seventh inning by hit-by-pitch.  Travis Fleming – another pinch hitter for DSU's Ratkie – reached on base by a walk.  Santana reached safely on first after the Chargers committed a defensive error to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs for Dakota State.

Ian Barker hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Lopez as the Trojans trailed by one run at 4-3 in the top seventh (Ratkie, who re-entered the game for Fleming, advanced to third on the same play).  Jake Harris hit an RBI ground out to score Ratkie as DSU tied the game for the second time at 4-4.  The Trojans could not convert their scoring chances as they left three runners on base as the top seventh inning ended.

DSU's defense prevented the Chargers to score in the bottom seventh, extending the game into extra innings.

Morton blasted his second solo home run of the game after leading off the bottom eighth inning, securing the victory for Briar Cliff.

Harris, Colman and Mullins each had a single for the Trojans.  Santana, Barker and Harris each produced an RBI.  Poncia reached on base by a walk two times.  Barker, Jamie Jorgensen, Colman and Fleming also walked once.  Ratkie swiped one base.

Morton went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, single and two RBIs for the Chargers.  Kopacz added two singles and two RBIs.  Maurice Handcox, Joshua Penrod, Ryan Welsh, Hernandez and Colegrove each had a hit.

BCU outhit DSU 12-3 in the game.  The Trojans left eight runners on base while the Chargers had seven runners left on base.

Taylor Boerger started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.  Trevor Pitsor worked for one out in the bottom sixth inning.  Tyler Pruszynski (L, 0-1) took the loss in relief as he worked for one inning.  He gave up one run on two hits.

Tyler Delperdang pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on three hits for Briar Cliff.  Luke Lindsey worked for two outs in the top sixth inning.  Jeraldo Montejano gave up two runs in the top seventh inning and allowed two walks.  Kalani Omoto (W, 2-2) earned the victory as he pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings.

Game 2 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL

The Trojans could not hold on to their 2-0 early lead in the second game of the doubleheader as the Chargers scored nine straight unanswered runs from second through fifth innings.  BCU held off DSU's late rally in the game to complete their doubleheader sweep.

Santana led off the game with a walk for DSU, followed by Lopez's single to advance Santana to second base.  After Barker's fly out, each Santana and Lopez advanced one base.  Poncia recorded a walk with two outs.  Colman recorded a 2-RBI single to score Santana and Lopez as the Trojans gained a 2-0 lead.

BCU's Colegrove recorded an RBI single to reduce DSU's lead to 2-1 in the bottom second inning.

The Chargers exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the third inning to grab a 6-2 lead, highlighted by Colegrove's 2-RBI double.  Briar Cliff recorded four hits in the inning, while Dakota State committed three defensive miscues.

Colegrove added a 3-run home run as BCU's lead grew to 9-2 in the bottom fifth inning.

Dakota State ended their scoring drought with three runs scored in the top sixth.  Jay Thaler and Jacob Arlt recorded back-to-back walk to start the sixth inning.  Santana drilled an RBI double to score Thaler as DSU trailed at 9-3 (Arlt advanced to third base on the same play).

The Trojans reduced their deficit to 9-4 after Arlt scored on a wild pitch committed by the Chargers.  Lopez added an RBI single to score Santana as the Trojans cut down BCU's lead to 9-5. 

DSU scored once in the top seventh inning, but fell short as the Chargers sealed the victory.  Poncia led off with a walk.  Jalen Boyd – pinch runner for Poncia – advanced to second base after Briar Cliff's wild pitch.  He reached to third base after Colman's ground out to second base.  Fleming recorded an RBI ground out to score Boyd.

Santana had a double, single and an RBI for the Trojans.  Lopez and Colman each added two singles.  Colman produced two RBIs.  Poncia and Fleming each had a hit.  Poncia reached on base by a walk three times.  Thaler recorded two base-on-balls.  Lopez, Boyd, Thlaer and Arlt each scored once.

Colegrove was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double and single for the Chargers.  He accumulated six RBIs in the game.  Joshua Penrod had two hits.  Welsh, Morton and Kopacz each had a single.

Both teams recorded eight hits in the game.  DSU left six runners on base compared to BCU three runners left on base.

Connor Nagel (L, 1-2) took the loss as he worked for 2 2/3 innings for Dakota State.  He allowed six runs (two unearned) on five hits.  Pitsor tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on two hits.  Luke Gassman worked a scoreless sixth inning for the Trojans.

Dylan Hannah (W, 3-1) gained the victory as he tossed four innings.  He allowed two runs on five hits and gave up five walks.  Jon Muller pitched one-plus inning and allowed three runs on two hits.  Justin Mauro closed the sixth inning with one hit allowed.  Zayne Mowen pitched in the seventh inning and gave up one run.

Both Dakota State and Briar Cliff will complete their four-game series with a doubleheader at Flynn Field Monday afternoon.  First game is slated for 3 p.m. in Trojans' home opener and their first two games of eight-game home stand at Flynn Field.  DSU will also host Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Tuesday afternoon.
