MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was not able to hold on to their lead Monday afternoon in their home opener at Flynn Field versus Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The Chargers rallied back from a 6-3 deficit and held on for an 8-7 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.  In the second game of the doubleheader, BCU completed a four-game series sweep over the Trojans by rallying back with six runs scored in the top seventh inning for a 13-9 win.

Dakota State fell to 5-10 overall record.  Briar Cliff won their eighth straight game after the conclusion of Monday's game, raising their overall record to 14-11.

Game 1 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL

The Chargers earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning.  Austin Kopacz reached on base by a hit-by-pitch.  He swiped to second base and advanced to third base caused by DSU's defensive error on the same play.  Joshua Penrod hit an RBI single to score Kopacz to give BCU a 1-0 lead.

DSU got on board in the bottom third frame, scoring three runs.  Dylan Colman started the Trojans with a walk, followed by Jacob Arlt's single to advance Colman to second base.  Shiquing Santana reached on base caused by Chargers' defensive error to set up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State.

Jose Lopez was hit-by-pitch, earning an RBI to allow Colman to score for DSU's first run of the game in the bottom third.  The Trojans broke up the 1-1 tie into a 2-1 lead after Arlt scored at home after Jake Harris collected an RBI.  Santana scored from BCU Arik Ward's wild pitch, extending Trojans' lead to 3-1.

Briar Cliff answered back with a 2-run home run by Scott Morton, knotting the game at 3-3 in the top fourth.

The Trojans scored another three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, with a help from Chargers' three hit-by-pitches committed by Ward.  Jordan Hofer reached on base by a hit-by-pitch with one out.  He swiped to second base.  Colman was also hit-by-pitch with two outs.

Dakota State regained their lead at 4-3 after Arlt's RBI single to score Hofer in the bottom fourth (Colman advanced to third base).  Santana was hit-by-pitch and advanced Arlt to second base, loading all three bases for the Trojans.  Lopez earned an RBI walk to score Colman as DSU's lead grew to 5-3.  A wild pitch by Charger Kalani Omoto allowed Arlt to score for Trojans' 6-3 lead, but the inning was ended as Santana was tagged out stretching on the same wild pitch.

BCU plated two more runs in the top fifth inning.  Darrell Wilson had an RBI single and Jake Erichsen recorded a stolen base to home as DSU's lead was reduced to 6-5.

Alex Colegrove drilled an RBI double as the Chargers tied the game at 6-6 in the top sixth inning.  Kopacz added an RBI single to score Colegrove as Briar Cliff overtook the lead from the Trojans at 7-6.

The Chargers made it 8-6 in the top seventh inning, highlighted by Morton's two-out triple.  Chase Hernandez followed up with an RBI single to score Morton, maintaining a two-run lead over DSU.

Arlt smashed a lead-off home run – his first home run of the season – as the Trojans trimmed BCU's lead to 8-7 in the bottom seventh.  DSU was unable to complete their comeback as they left their bases loaded when the game ended.

Arlt was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 for Dakota State.  He had a home run, two singles and tallied two RBIs.  Arlt scored three times.  Barker added a single.  Colman recorded two runs.  Lopez collected two RBIs.  Tyler Ratkie, Lopez and Colman each walked once. 

Kopacz, Morton, Hernandez and Colegrove each had two hits for Briar Cliff.  Wilson, Penrod and Hackenmueller each had a hit.  Morton produced two RBIs.  Kopacz, Penrod, Wilson, Hernandez and Colegrove each had an RBI.  Kopacz swiped two bases.

BCU outhit DSU 11-4 in the game.  The Trojans committed five errors while the Chargers had three defensive miscues.  Briar Cliff's defense recorded two double plays in the game.

The Chargers left seven runners on base, while the Trojans had five runners left on base.

Richard Sternberg earned a no decision after pitching five innings for the Trojans.  He gave up five runs (three unearned) on six hits.  David Kirby (L, 1-1) recorded the loss as he gave up two unearned runs on two hits in the sixth inning.  Tyler Pruszynski worked for 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits in relief.

Ward started the game for the Chargers, pitching 3 2/3 innings.  He allowed six runs (two unearned) on two hits.  Kalani Omoto (W, 3-2) tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief to earn the victory.  He limited DSU to one hit.  Luke Lindsey (S, 1) recorded a save, despite giving up a home run in the bottom seventh inning.

Game 2 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 9 – FINAL

Briar Cliff (Iowa) raced to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings before Dakota State answered back by scoring nine straight runs in nightcap.  The Trojans were not able to hold on to their lead as the Chargers exploded for six runs in the top seventh inning for a four-run victory.

The Chargers took the first lead of the game in the top first inning, highlighted by Ryan Welsh's RBI single and Morton's grand slam.

Penrod added a 2-run home run in the top second inning, extending BCU's lead to 7-0.

Dakota State answered back with three runs in the bottom second frame.  Garrett Mullins and Arlt hit back-to-back singles.  Ratkie smashed a 3-run home run as the Trojans cut Chargers' lead to 7-3.

DSU exploded for six runs in the bottom third inning to regain their first lead of the game.  Hofer blasted his first career home run to lead off the bottom third as the Trojans trailed at 7-4.  After Travis Fleming reached on base by BCU's defensive error, Dakota State hit four consecutive singles by Mullins, Arlt, Ratkie and Andrew Hesse.  During DSU's four straight hits, the Trojans scored twice as BCU's lead went down to 7-6.

After the pitching change by Briar Cliff in the bottom third, David Novak hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Arlt as the Trojans knotted the game at 7-7.  Jalen Boyd added an RBI single to score Ratkie as the Trojans earned an 8-7 lead.  After Hofer was hit-by-pitch, Fleming hit an RBI single to score Hesse as DSU extended their lead to 9-7.

Both teams did not score in the fourth through sixth innings.

Briar Cliff mounted a comeback in the final inning, scoring six runs – all by two outs.  Maurice Handcox, Jr. was on first base with one out, but Penrod was struck out swinging for the second out of the top seventh.  A wild pitch by DSU's Brady Wauer allowed Handcox, Jr. advance to second base.  Welsh reached on base by a walk.

Kopacz hit an RBI single to score Handcox, Jr. as the Chargers cut Trojans' lead to 9-8 in the top seventh.  Wilson added an RBI single to score Welsh as BCU tied the game at 9-9.  Morton drilled an RBI double to score Welsh for BCU's 10-9 lead (Kopacz to third base).

After Hernandez was reached on first base by an intentional walk, a wild pitch by DSU's Barker scored Wilson to extend Chargers' lead to 11-9.  Colegrove hit a 2-RBI single to score Morton and Hernandez as BCU held a four-run lead at 13-9.

Dakota State was unable to answer back in the bottom seventh frame, leaving one runner on base when game ended. 

DSU's Arlt was perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, finishing the day by going 6-for-6.  He had a double, two singles and scored twice.  Ratkie added a home run, single and produced four RBIs.  Hesse and Hofer each tallied two hits and an RBI.  Boyd and Fleming each had a hit and an RBI.  Mullins had two singles.  Novak added an RBI.

Morton went 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs, home run, double and single for Briar Cliff.  Wilson added three hits and an RBI.  Kopacz and Adam Webb each had two hits.  Penrod had a home run and two RBIs. 

The Chargers had 15 hits in the game compared to the Trojans 13 hits.  Both teams converted two double plays.  DSU left six runners on base, while BCU had two runners left on base.

Wauer started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (one unearned) on 12 hits.  He recorded seven strikeouts.  Barker (L, 0-1) recorded the loss as he worked for one out in the top seventh inning.  He gave up three runs (one unearned) on three hits.

Matt Wesselmann started the game for Briar Cliff, working for two-plus innings.  He allowed nine runs (one unearned) on nine hits.  Omoto worked for 1 1/3 scoreless inning, limiting the Trojans to three hits.  Alex Lamberson (W, 2-2) earned the victory as he tossed 2 2/3 scoreless inning.  Lindsey (S, 2) gained his second save of the day as he closed the game in the seventh inning, giving up one hit.

Dakota State looks to end their four-game losing skid as they continue their eight-game home stand Tuesday afternoon.  The Trojans host their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a non-conference doubleheader.  First game is set for 2 p.m. at Flynn Field.
