MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) shut down long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 8-0 Tuesday afternoon at Flynn Field, thanks to a 7-run production in the fifth inning in a non-conference baseball action.  DSU earned a doubleheader split with the Tigers as DWU won the second game 11-3, outscoring the Trojans 9-2 in the last three innings of the game.

Dakota State, which earned their first win of the season Tuesday, is currently at 6-11 overall record.  Dakota Wesleyan is 10-9 overall record.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 8, Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

Tyler Ratkie smashed a solo home run with one out as the Trojans opened up with a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  It was his second home run of the season.

The Tigers' first hit did not come until the fourth inning when Neil Nagle recorded a single.

Dakota State exploded for seven runs in the bottom fifth frame.  Andrew Hesse reached on base by a walk.  He advanced to second base by a wild pitch from DWU's Dustin Steckler.  Zach Sutera produced an RBI single to score Hesse as DSU extended their lead to 2-0 (Sutera advanced to second base on throw).

Travis Fleming – pinch hitter for Jalen Boyd – was hit-by-pitch in the bottom fifth for the Trojans.  Ratkie followed up with a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.  Dakota State made it 3-0 after Jordan Hofer added an RBI walk to score Sutera. 

Jacob Arlt also recorded an RBI walk to Boyd as Dakota State's lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth.  DSU added a run for a 5-0 lead after Ratkie scored from DWU's wild pitch. 

Richard Sternberg drilled a 2-RBI double to score Jose Lopez (courtesy runner for Hofer) and Arlt to gain a seven-run lead.  Garrett Mullins hit an RBI single to score Sternberg as Dakota State take an 8-0 lead by the end of the fifth inning.

The Trojans ended the game with a double play by Boyd, Ratkie and Arlt, securing the first home victory of the season at Flynn Field.

Ratkie and Sternberg each went 1-for-3 at the plate with an extra-base hit for DSU.  Sternberg tallied two RBIs and Ratkie added an RBI.  Hofer, Arlt, Mullins and Sutera each recorded an RBI.  Boyd, Mullins and Sutera each had a single.  Arlt reached on base by a walk twice.

Nagle and Dominic Sebastiani each had a single for DWU. 

DSU outhit DWU 5-2 in the game.  The Trojans left four runners on base while the Tigers had two runners left on base. 

Dakota State recorded two double plays, while Dakota Wesleyan had one double play in the game.

Jamie Jorgensen (W, 1-0) tossed a complete game victory for the Trojans.  He limited the Tigers to two hits in seven innings of work and recorded three strikeouts.

David Steckler (L, 1-2) recorded the loss for the Tigers.  He pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on two hits.  He gave up four walks.  Steven Somerville worked in the fifth inning and gave up two runs.  Jace Saxon worked for 1 2/3 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits.

Game 2 – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

The Tigers held a 2-1 lead through four innings and outscored the Trojans 9-2 in the final three innings to earn a doubleheader split.

DWU took the first lead of the game in the top second inning.  Tramane Moore reached on base by a lead-off bunt single.  Nagle recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Jerrod Zens to second base.  Zens went to third base after a passed ball by the Trojans.  After a line-out by Sebastiani, Zens scored on DSU's wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Austin Calhoon hit a solo home run with two outs as the Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 in the top second.

Dakota State got on board with a run scored in the bottom third frame.  Ian Barker led off the bottom half with a double.  He advanced to third base after a wild pitch by DWU.  After Arlt reached first base by a walk, Ratkie recorded an RBI to score Barker as the Trojans cut Tigers' lead to 2-1.

Dakota Wesleyan plated two runs in the top fifth.  Chris Combs started the inning with a triple.  DWU made it 3-1 after Jonah Johnson hit an RBI single to score Combs.  Johnson swiped two straight bases.  Moore added an RBI single to score Johnson as the Tigers' lead went up to 4-1.

Nagel led off the sixth inning with a solo home run as DWU's lead expanded to 5-1.  The Tigers added another run to make it 6-1 after Calhoon recorded a walk, followed by Combs' RBI double.

The Trojans answered back with two runs scored in the bottom sixth.  Lopez recorded a single.  He advanced to second base by DWU's wild pitch.  Jorgensen reached on base by base-on-balls.  Tony Poncia hit an RBI single to right field to score Lopez.  While on the same play, the Tigers committed a defensive miscue to allow Jorgensen to score as DSU trailed 6-3.

Dakota Wesleyan added five more runs for an 11-3 lead in the top seventh inning, highlighted by Calhoon's grand slam.

DWU secured the game as the Trojans went three-and-out in the final inning.

Barker had a double and a run scored for DSU.  Poncia added a single and an RBI.  Shiquing Santana, Lopez and Dylan Colman each recorded a single. 

Calhoon went 2-for-3 with two home runs and produced five RBIs for DWU.  Combs added a triple, double and an RBI.  Moore collected two singles and an RBI.  Johnson and Nagle each had a single and an RBI.  Jake Capko had a hit.  Cole Wenande reached on base by a walk four times in the game.

Dakota Wesleyan tallied 10 hits compared to Dakota State five this.  DWU left four runners on base while DSU had three runners left on base.

Garrison Collier (L, 2-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He worked for 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on five hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.  Trevor Pitsor pitched one inning and gave up two runs on three hits.  Luke Gassman worked for two outs in the sixth inning.  David Novak pitched in the top seventh inning and allowed two runs (one unearned).  David Kirby came in the finish the top seventh inning, giving up three runs on two hits.

Daniel Galvez (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing five innings for the Tigers.  He yielded one run on three hits and recorded three strikeouts.  Michal Kinzler worked the final two innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on two hits.  He struck out four DSU's batters.

Dakota State remains at home as they conclude their eight-game home stand Friday and Saturday at Flynn Field.  The Trojans kick off their North Star Athletic Association conference schedule versus Mayville State (N.D.).  The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. on Friday and conclude the four-game series with another doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m.
