MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) continued their eight-game baseball home stand at Flynn Field Monday afternoon as they kicked off the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference at Flynn Field.  The Trojans played a tripleheader versus Mayville State (N.D.) and recorded a three-game sweep over the Comets.  DSU posted scores of 5-2, 4-3 and 4-1 to start the NSAA conference with a 3-0 record.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 9-11.  Mayville State, who won the NSAA conference postseason tournament last year, fell to 10-15 overall record and 0-3 NSAA record.  The Comets had lost 13 times in the last 15 games.

Both teams conclude their four-game series with a nine-inning game on Tuesday.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Flynn Field.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Mayville State (N.D.) 2 – FINAL

The Comets opened up with a one-run lead, but the Trojans exploded four runs in the bottom fourth inning to propel for a 5-2 game one victory.

Jose Guzman blasted a solo home run with two outs to give Mayville State its first lead of the game 1-0 in the top first frame.

DSU ended their scoring drought with four runs in the bottom fourth inning to overtake the lead from MSU.  Jake Harris led off the Trojans with a single.  Jordan Hofer – courtesy runner for Harris – swiped to second base.  Jacob Arlt produced an RBI single to score Hofer as DSU tied the game at 1-1.

Arlt advanced to second base by a stolen base for Dakota State in the bottom fourth.  He moved to third base after Richard Sternberg hit a ground out.  After Tyler Ratkie reached on base by a walk, Jose Lopez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Arlt as the Trojans earned their first lead of the game at 2-1.

The Trojans continued their scoring surge in the bottom fourth frame.  Ian Barker was hit-by-pitch and advanced Ratkie to second base.  Dylan Colman recorded an RBI single to score Ratkie for DSU's 3-1 lead.

Dakota State made it 4-1 in the fourth inning after Jamie Jorgensen added another RBI single to score Barker.

Mayville State had a bases loaded situation in the top fifth inning, but could not convert their scoring chances.

Dusty Dove smashed a solo home run with one out as MSU trimmed DSU's lead to 4-2 in the top sixth.

The Trojans answered back with a run scored in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Lopez reached on base by MSU's defensive error.  He advanced to second base by Comets' wild pitch and to third base after Colman was ground out.  Lopez ran home after Mayville State committed another wild pitch, extending DSU's lead to 5-2.

MSU left one runner on base in the final inning as the Trojans secured the NSAA conference opener victory.

Arlt went perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, single and an RBI with a run scored for Dakota State.  Colman and Jorgensen each had a single and an RBI.  Harris tallied a single.  Lopez collected an RBI.  Lopez, Jorgensen, Arlt, Sternberg and Ratkie each reached on base by a walk.

Guzman and Dove each hit a solo home run and an RBI for Mayville State.  Spencer Merle, Drake Yoshioka and Dondrei Hubbard each added a hit.  Yoshioka, Guzman, Hubbard, Aaron Miller and Nathan Walsh each had a walk.

Both teams had five hits in the game.  DSU left nine runners on base, while MSU had eight runners left on base.

Taylor Boerger (W, 2-0) earned the victory after working for six innings on the mound for the Trojans.  He gave up two runs on four hits, four walks and struck out four MSU's batters.  Tyler Pruszynski notched his first save of the season after tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

Tyler Leibert (L, 0-3) took the loss after tossing five innings for the Comets.  He allowed four runs on five hits, walked four times and recorded four strikeouts.  Preston Kath worked in the sixth inning, giving up an unearned run and a walk.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Mayville State (N.D.) 3 – FINAL

DSU rallied back from a 3-1 deficit after outscoring MSU 3-0 in the final two-and-half innings in the second game of the tripleheader.

The Comets gained its first lead of the game in the top second with a run scored.  Hubbard led off with a double.  Robbie Glass – courtesy runner for Hubbard – advanced to third base after Dove's single.  Aaron Miller reached on base caused by DSU's defensive error, allowing Glass to score as the Comets earned a 1-0 lead.

Dakota State knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom fourth after MSU committed a defensive miscue.  Arlt reached on base by a walk.  Tony Poncia hit a two-out single and advanced Arlt to second base.  Sternberg reached safely on base after a fielder's choice, but an error by MSU at second base allowed Arlt to score for DSU's first run of the game.

Mayville State scored twice in the top half of the fifth inning.  Mason Swegarden led off with a single.  Spencer Merle hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Swegarden to second base.  Guzman added a single and moved Swegarden to third base.  Hubbard drilled a 2-RBI triple to score Swegarden and Guzman as MSU regained their lead to 3-1.

The Trojans answered back with two runs scored in the bottom fifth.  Hofer and Lopez fueled DSU with back-to-back singles (Hofer advanced to third base after Lopez's single).  Hofer scored home after a wild pitch by MSU as DSU cut their deficit to 3-2.

Dakota State tied the game at 3-3 after Arlt produced an RBI single to score Lopez in the bottom fifth frame.

DSU grabbed its first lead of the game in the bottom sixth inning at 4-3, thanks to a two-out RBI double Lopez to score Hofer who hit a two-out single.

Pruszynski closed the game in the seventh inning by recording three outs as the Trojans secured their second straight NSAA conference victory.

Lopez was 3-of-4 at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI for Dakota State.  Hofer added two singles and scored twice.  Harris had a double.  Arlt registered a single and an RBI.  Poncia had a hit.

Hubbard went 2-of-3 at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits (triple and double) and produced two RBIs for the Comets.  Merle, Yoshioka, Guzman, Dove, Jalen Hashbarger and Swegarden each had a hit.  Miller recorded an RBI.

Both teams registered eight hits in the game.  DSU had eight runners left on base compared to MSU's six runners left on base.

Brady Wauer started the game on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He pitched five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.  Trevor Pitsor (W, 1-0) earned the victory in relief as he worked a scoreless sixth inning.  Pruszynski earned his second save after shutting down the Comets in the seventh inning.

Zachary Mohoney pitched the four-plus innings for the Comets.  He allowed two unearned runs on five hits and recorded six strikeouts.  Matthew Tomblin (L, 0-1) recorded the loss in relief as he tossed two innings.  He gave up two runs on three hits.

Game 3 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Mayville State (N.D.) 1 – FINAL

Dakota State opened a 4-0 lead through the first three innings and never look back as the Trojans completed a tripleheader sweep over Mayville State.

DSU scored its first run of the game in the bottom second frame.  Arlt recorded a walk and advanced to second base after Poncia's sacrifice bunt.  Jorgensen drilled an RBI double to score Arlt as the Trojans grabbed a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans continued their scoring surge with three runs scored in the third inning.  Ratkie led off with a double, followed by Hofer's hit-by-pitch.  Lopez added a single to advance Ratkie to third and Hofer to second base.

Harris hit a 2-RBI single to score Ratkie and Hofer to extend DSU's lead to 3-0 lead (Lopez was out at third base on the same play).  Colman reached on first on a fielder's choice while Harris advanced to third base after MSU's defensive error play at second base.

Dakota State made it 4-0 after Arlt's RBI single to score Harris in the bottom third inning.

Hashbarger recorded an RBI single in the top fourth as Mayville State cut Trojans' lead to 4-1.

The Comets left two runners on base in the final inning as Dakota State secured a tripleheader sweep, starting the NSAA conference play with a 3-0 record for the first time.

Harris had a single and two RBIs for the Trojans.  Arlt added a single and an RBI.  Jorgensen collected a double, an RBI and swiped one base.  Ratkie also had a double.  Lopez and Travis Fleming each had a hit.

Guzman was 2-of-3 at the plate for the Comets.  Hashbarger added a single and an RBI.  Merle, Dove, Brady Nygaard and Riley Nelson each recorded a single.

MSU outhit DSU 7-6 in the game.  The Comets had seven runners left on base, while the Trojans left five runners on base.

Sternberg (W, 1-2) earned the victory after tossing 6 1/3 innings for Dakota State.  He allowed one run on seven hits and recorded five strikeouts.  Pruszynski (S, 3) earned his third save of the day after recording the final two outs of the game.

Mayville State's Kody Rock (L, 3-3) took the loss, despite pitching for six innings.  He gave up four runs on six hits.
