Game 3 recap from Monday

MADISON, S.D. – Tied at 4-4 after five innings Tuesday afternoon in a nine-inning game, Mayville State (N.D.) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 14-2 in three innings to earn an 18-6 series finale victory in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball four-game series at Flynn Field.  The Comets scored six runs in the sixth and eighth innings to earn the win.

Dakota State fell to 9-12 overall record, but finished 3-1 record in the NSAA conference's four-game series versus the Comets.  DSU completed their eight-game home stand with a 4-4 record.  Mayville State improved to 11-15 and 1-3 NSAA record.

DSU took its first lead of the game in the bottom first inning as Jake Harris blasted a solo home run.  It was his first home run of the season and his fourth career home run at Dakota State.

Mayville State answered back with a run scored in the top third.  After Drake Yoshioka and Spencer Merle hit back-to-back singles, Jose Guzman was grounded into double play by DSU's Tony Poncia and Jacob Arlt (advanced Yoshioka to third base).  Dondrei Hubbard hit an RBI single to score Yoshioka as MSU knotted the game at 1-1.

The Trojans regained their lead in the bottom half of the third inning.  Jordan Hofer led off with a single.  He swiped to second base with one out.  Dylan Colman was hit-by-pitch, followed by Arlt's walk to set up the bases loaded situation for DSU.  Hofer scored from MSU's wild pitch by Camran Bonnema, giving Dakota State a 2-1 lead.

DSU made it 3-1 in the bottom fourth, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Ian Barker and Tyler Ratkie

The Comets came back in the top fifth with three runs.  Hubbard hit 2-RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.  Jalen Hashbarger added an RBI fielder's choice as MSU earned their first lead of the game at 4-3.

Dakota State answered back with a run in the bottom fifth, tying the game for the third time.  Colman hit a single and advanced to second by MSU's wild pitch by Jacob Torgerson.  After Arlt's second walk of the game with Colman advancing to third base, Shiquing Santana hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Colman as the Trojans tied the game at 4-4.

MSU started the sixth inning by hitting six straight times – five consecutive singles by Mason Swegarden, Riley Nelson, Yoshioka, Merle and Guzman followed by Hubbard's 3-RBI triple – and exploded for six runs.  The Comets turned a 4-4 tie ballgame into a 10-4 lead.

The Trojans scored twice in the bottom sixth inning.  Travis Fleming – pinch hitter for Hofer – was hit-by-pitch with two outs.  Hofer, who re-entered the game, swiped to second base.  Jose Lopez reached on base by a walk.  After Harris' fielder's choice to advance Hofer to third base (Lopez was out at second), Colman added a walk and advanced Jalen Boyd – courtesy runner for Harris – to second base.

Arlt reached on base by a walk for the third time and allowed Hofer to score as DSU cut MSU's lead to 10-5 in the bottom sixth.  A wild pitch by Comet Brandon Kupfer allowed Boyd to score as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 10-5.

Mayville State scored two more runs in the top seventh.  Yoshioka hit an RBI double to score Swegarden, who led off with a hit-by-pitch.  Merle followed up with a single to advance Yoshioka to third, but on the same play, Yoshioka scored home caused by DSU's defensive error as MSU's lead grew to 12-6.

The Comets had another six-run production in the top eighth inning as the lead expanded to 18-6.  The highlight from that inning saw Robbie Glass smashed a grand slam.

MSU ended the game by recording a double play by Yoshioka, Nelson and Dusty Dove.

Barker was 2-of-4 at the plate with two doubles for the Trojans.  Ratkie added a double and an RBI.  Harris had a home run and an RBI.  Hofer, Lopez and Colman each recorded a hit.  Hofer swiped two bases.  Arlt reached on base by a walk three times and produced an RBI.  Santana registered an RBI.

Hubbard led the Comets by going 4-of-6 at the plate with a triple, three singles and collected five RBIs.  Glass added four RBIs.  Yoshioka went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI.  Merle also went perfect with 3-for-3.  Guzman, Dove, Aaron Miller and Brady Nygaard each had a hit.

MSU outhit DSU 20-7 in the game.  The Trojans left 11 runners on base compared to the Comets 7 runners left on base.

Jamie Jorgensen started the game for DSU.  He tossed five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.  Trevor Pitsor (L, 0-1) recorded the loss as he gave up six runs on six hits in the sixth inning.  Luke Gassman worked for two innings in relief, giving up two runs (one unearned) on two hits.  David Kirby worked for one out in the eighth inning, allowing four runs on two hits.  Garrett Mullins pitched for two outs in the eighth, giving up two runs on two hits.
