BELLEVUE, Neb. – Nationally-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) used a late surge in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball action Sunday afternoon at Roddy Field.  The Trojans maintained a 1-0 lead through seven-and-half innings before the Bruins exploded for five runs in the bottom eighth for a 5-1 game one victory.  DSU opened up with an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader, but BU scored seven straight runs to earn a 7-1 win.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 9-16 and 3-5 NSAA conference record.  Bellevue, No. 4 in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, completed a four-game series sweep over DSU and raised their overall record to 27-5 and 7-0 NSAA.

Game 1 – #4 Bellevue (Neb.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

The first game of the doubleheader saw a pitcher's duel between Trojan Jamie Jorgensen and Bruin Braulio Torres-Perez.

Dakota State gained its first lead of the game in the top second inning.  Tony Poncia reached on base by a walk, followed by Jordan Hofer's single to advance Poncia to second base.  Jacob Arlt added another walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Tyler Ratkie hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Poncia as the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Bellevue ended their scoring drought as their offense exploded for five runs in the bottom eighth frame.

Ross Feeley led off the bottom eighth with a walk for the Bruins.  John King added another walk and advanced Feeley to second base.  Dan Greco recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Feeley to third base and King to second base.  After Jake Bowne reached on base by an intentional walk, Todd Nicks was hit-by-pitch to score Feeley as the Bruins tied the game at 1-1.

Bellevue made it 2-1 after Gabriel De La Rose hit an RBI bunt single to score King.  Joe Moran added an RBI after being hit-by-pitch and Trevor Jones followed up with a 2-RBI single to extend BU's lead to 5-1.

The Trojans were unable to make a comeback in the final inning as they went three-and-out.

Hofer had a single for Dakota State.  Poncia and Arlt each recorded a walk.  Poncia had a run scored while Ratkie produced an RBI.

Jones was 1-of-5 at the plate with a single and two RBIs for Bellevue.  Browne added two singles.  Feeley and De La Rosa each had a hit.  Nicks and De La Rose each tallied an RBI.

The Bruins recorded five singles in the game compared to the Trojans one single.  BU left ten runners on base while DSU had two runners left on base.

Jorgensen started the game for DSU, tossing seven-plus innings (pitched to the first batter of the bottom eight).  He allowed one run on three hits.  Ian Barker (L, 0-2) took the loss after working for two outs in the eighth inning.  He gave up four runs on two hits.  David Kirby tossed the final out of the eighth inning.

Torres-Perez (W, 6-0) earned a complete game win for BU.  He limited DSU to one run on one hit.  He gave up two walks and recorded six strikeouts.

Game 2 - #4 Bellevue (Neb.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning, but was unable to hold on to their lead as Bellevue scored seven unanswered runs to complete the four-game series sweep.

After recording the first two outs of the game, Jake Harris hit a single.  Jorgensen drilled an RBI double to score Harris for DSU's 1-0 lead.

Bellevue scored twice in the bottom second inning as they gained a 2-1 lead.  Nicks hit a double with two outs, followed by Matt Evans' RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.  Moran followed up with an RBI triple to score Evans for BU's first lead of the game.

The Bruins added two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth as their lead expanded to 6-1.

BU secured the victory after the Trojans went three-and-out in the final inning.

Jorgensen led the Trojans by going 1-of-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI.  Harris, Garrett Mullins and Shiquing Santana each added a single.

Moran was perfect at the plate, going 3-of-3 with a triple, double, single and produced two RBIs for the Bruins.  Feeley added a single and two RBIs.  Nicks had a double.  Colton Nash and Browne each added a hit.

BU outhit DSU 9-4.  The Bruins left six runners on base while the Trojans had two runners left on base.

Richard Sternberg (L, 1-3) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU.  He tossed five-plus innings and allowed seven runs (two unearned) on nine hits.  He struck out four BU's batters.  Trevor Pitsor worked for an inning, recording two strikeouts.

Aaron Bain (W, 1-0) pitched a complete game victory for BU.  He allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven Trojans' batters.

Dakota State looks to snap their five-game losing skid as they stay on the road Tuesday evening.  The Trojans visit their in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) in a non-conference doubleheader.  The first game is set for 5 p.m. at Riverside Park (Bob Tereshinski Stadium) in Yankton, S.D.
