ABERDEEN, S.D. – Presentation (S.D.) won the battle of pitchers' duel in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association Baseball doubleheader Saturday evening at Fossum Field with a 2-0 victory over Dakota State (S.D.).  The Trojans snapped their eight-game losing skid as they head on for a 9-7 victory in the nightcap.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 10-19 and 4-6 NSAA conference record.  Presentation is 13-25 overall record and 3-7 NSAA.

Both teams conclude their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.  The doubleheader will be played at American Legion Field in Redfield, S.D.

Game 1 – Presentation (S.D.) 2, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

The first game of the doubleheader saw a battle of pitchers' duel between Dakota State's Taylor Boerger and Presentation's Connor Perry, with both pitchers going to the distance in a nine-inning game.

The Saints scored its first run of the game in the bottom fourth inning.  Albert Castro led off with a walk.  He advanced to second and third base after back-to-back ground out.  Lane Hovde hit an RBI single to score Castro for PC 1-0 lead.

Presentation added a run in the bottom fifth frame.  With bases loaded and one out situation, Castro recorded an RBI fielder's choice to extend PC's lead to 2-0.

The Trojans left one runner on base in the final inning as the Saints secured the series opener.

Tyler Ratkie was 2-of-4 at the plate with a double and single for Dakota State.  Tony Poncia, Jake Harris, Ian Barker and Dylan Colman each added a single.  Barker reached on base by a walk twice and swiped one base.  Jalen Boyd, Travis Fleming and Jamie Jorgensen each had a walk. 

Castro and Hovde each had a single and an RBI for Presentation.  Johnnie Morris, Tony Hofman, Jesse Spangler, Drew Sanders and Josh Youngchild each added a hit.

PC registered seven hits in the game compared to DSU six hits.  The Trojans left nine runners on base while the Saints had seven runners left on base.

Boeger (L, 2-2) recorded the loss after working eight innings and 101 pitches.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out eight PC's batters. 

Perry earned a complete game victory after throwing a full nine-inning game with 142 pitches.  He allowed six runs and walked five DSU's batters.  He had seven strikeouts from the pitching mound.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Presentation (S.D.) 7 – FINAL

Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game in the opening inning of the second game.  Jordan Hofer and Poncia hit back-to-back singles to kick off the game.  Dylan Colman was reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation with two outs.  A passed ball committed by PC allowed Hofer to score to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

Presentation responded with three runs scored in the bottom half of the first inning, highlighted by Hofman's 2-RBI double.  Drew Sanders added an RBI fielder's choice to extend PC's lead to 3-1.

The Trojans answered back with three runs in the top second frame to regain their lead.  Jay Thaler started the second inning with a walk.  Ratkie followed up with a single to advance Shiquing Santana – courtesy runner for Thaler – to second base.  Boyd reached on base by PC's defensive error and allowed Santana to score as DSU trailed at 3-2. 

After Boyd advanced to third after a wild pitch by PC, Poncia reached on base by a walk with two outs in the top second for DSU.  Harris reached on base by another Saints' defensive miscue to allow Boyd to score as the Trojans tied the game at 3-3.  Jorgensen added an RBI single to score Poncia as DSU regained their lead at 4-3.

Dakota State added two more runs in the top third inning.  Jacob Arlt reached on base safely after Presentation's dropped fly.  Thaler followed up with a walk and advanced Arlt to second base.  Ratkie hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Arlt to third base and courtesy runner Santana to second base.  Hofer hit an RBI single with one out to score Arlt for 5-3 DSU lead.

Poncia added an RBI single to score Santana as the Trojans' lead grew to 6-3 in the top third.

The Saints scored three runs in the bottom third after a defensive error and a pair of wild pitches committed by DSU, knotting the game at 6-6.

Dakota State set up a bases loaded situation in the top fourth inning after Harris reached on base by PC's error, Jorgensen with a walk and Colman with a bunt single.  Thaler produced an RBI single to score Harris as DSU regained their lead at 7-6.

The Trojans scored twice for a 9-6 lead in the top sixth inning caused by PC's defensive miscue.

PC scored once in the bottom seventh inning, but the Trojans secured the victory as the Saints left one runner on base.

Colman led Dakota State with three singles and a run scored.  He also had a stolen base.  Hofer added two singles and two RBIs.  Poncia had two hits and an RBI.  Thaler, Harris and Jorgensen each tallied a single and an RBI.  Ratkie had a hit.

Hofman went 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single, two RBIs and two runs scored for Presentation.  Spangler added two singles.  Sanderson registered two RBIs.  Morris and Hovde each had a single.

DSU outhit PC 11-6.  The Saints committed six defensive errors while the Trojans had two defensive miscues.

Brady Wauer (W, 1-3) recorded the victory on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for three innings and allowed six runs (three unearned) on five hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.  Richard Sternberg tossed two scoreless innings in relief.  Tyler Pruszynski (S, 4) earned his fourth save of the season after pitching the last two innings.  He allowed one run on one hit and struck out three PC's batters.

Jake Bunjovac took the mound after pitching four innings for Presentation.  He allowed seven runs (four unearned) on eight hits and six walks.  Brandt Martinez worked for one inning in relief and allowed two unearned runs on two hits.  Alex Lunneborg and Marcus Warscher each pitched one scoreless inning.
