REDFIELD, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held off a pair of furious comeback by Presentation (S.D.) Sunday afternoon in the North Star Athletic Association conference doubleheader at American Legion Field.  The Trojans held on to a 10-8 game one victory and completed a doubleheader sweep with a 6-5 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.  DSU finished the weekend by taking three of four games in the four-game series.

Dakota State won their third straight game and raised their overall record to 12-19 and 6-6 NSAA conference record (currently in a two-way tie for fourth place with Valley City State, N.D.).  Presentation fell to 13-27 overall record and 3-9 NSAA conference record.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 10, Presentation (S.D.) 8 – FINAL

The Trojans took the first lead of the nine-inning game in the first inning.  Tony Poncia and Jake Harris hit back-to-back singles with one out.  Dylan Colman produced a two-out RBI single to score Poncia for DSU's 1-0 lead.

Dakota State added a run in the top second inning.  Richard Sternberg led off with a walk.  Tyler Ratkie was hit-by-pitch and advanced Sternberg to second base.  Jalen Boyd reached safely on first base after PC's defensive error to set up a bases loaded situation.

Jordan Hofer recorded an RBI to score Sternberg as the Trojans extended their lead to 2-0 in the top second frame.

PC cut DSU's lead to 2-1 after Jesse Spangler hit a solo home run in the bottom second frame.

The Saints added a run in the bottom third.  Johnnie Morris reached on base by base-on-balls.  He advanced to second base after Lane Hovde's sacrifice bunt.  Tony Hofman hit an RBI single with two outs to score Morris as Presentation knotted the game at 2-2.

Dakota State regained their lead in the top fourth inning.  Ratkie was hit-by-pitch with two outs and advanced to third after Saints' defensive miscue.  After Boyd's walk, Hofer hit an RBI single to score Ratkie as the Trojans took a 3-2 lead.

DSU exploded for three runs in the top fifth frame, highlighted by a pair of doubles.  Jake Harris led off with a double.  Ian Barker reched on first base by PC's defensive error and advanced Andrew Hesse – courtesy runner for Harris – to home for DSU's 4-2 lead.  Jacob Arlt added an RBI single to score Barker to extend Trojans' lead to 5-2.  Ratkie drilled an RBI double to score Sternberg (who reached on base by a fielder's choice) as the Trojans' lead expanded to 6-2.

Presentation cut Dakota State's lead to 6-3 in the bottom fifth.  Hovde started the Saints with a double, followed by Albert Castro's single to advance Hovde to third.  Spangler hit an RBI single to score Hovde as the Saints reduced DSU's lead down to three runs.

PC's Spangler blasted a 2-run home run in the bottom seventh inning as the Trojans' lead was trimmed to 6-5.

Dakota State broke their scoring drought with four runs score in the final inning.  Jamie Jorgensen reached on base by a walk.  Dylan Colman hit a single and advanced Jorgensen to second base.  Ratkie recorded a 2-RBI double with two outs to score Jorgensen and Colman to put DSU up 8-5.

The Trojans continued their scoring surge as Boyd hit an RBI single to score Ratkie for 9-5 lead.  After Boyd swiped to second base, Hofer added an RBI single to score Boyd as DSU's lead expanded to 10-5.

Presentation mounted a comeback in the bottom half of the ninth inning.  Hovde hit a 2-run home run as PC trailed at 10-7.  Tony Hofman followed up with a solo home run as DSU's lead was reduced to 10-8.

The Trojans secured the victory as the Saints left one runner on base when the game ended.

Ratkie led Dakota State with two doubles and three RBIs.  Hofer registered three hits (a double and two singles) and drove in two runs.  Harris added a double and a single.  Colman and Arlt each tallied two hits and an RBI.  Poncia had two singles.  Boyd recorded a single, stolen base and an RBI.

Spangler had two home runs, single and collected four RBIs for Presentation.  Castro and Hofman each added a home run, single and two RBIs.  Hovde added a double and a single.

DSU outhit PC 14-11 in the game.  The Trojans left 11 runners on base compared to PC 8 runners left on base.

Jorgensen (W. 2-0) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He allowed five runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.  Sternberg pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on one hit.  Tyler Pruszynski (S, 5) earned his fifth save of the season after working for the final two outs of the game.  He gave up one run on two hits.

Ryan Wolf (L, 0-2) recorded the loss for Presentation.  He tossed five innings and gave up six runs (three unearned) on eight hits.  Tanner Menke pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and yielded DSU to one hit.  Alex Lunneborg worked for one inning and allowed four runs on five hits.  Marcus Warscher pitched for the final out of the top ninth inning.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Presentation (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

Dakota State jumped to a six-run lead before the Saints make a late surge in the second game of the doubleheader.  The Trojans held off PC's comeback as DSU held on for 6-5 victory in the series finale.

Both teams were unable to score in the first two innings of the game.

The Trojans got on board in the third inning after exploding for four runs.  Harris led off with a single, followed by Colman's double to advance Harris to third.  The Trojans continued their hitting as Arlt produced an RBI single to score Harris for DSU's 1-0 lead.

Jorgensen smashed a 3-run home run to extend Trojans' lead to 4-0 in the top third frame.  It was the first home run of the season for Jorgensen, his seventh career home run at Dakota State.

DSU continued its scoring run with two runs in the top fourth inning.  Harris drilled a double with one out, followed by Colman's single to advance Harris to third base.  Arlt recorded an RBI single to score Harris to put Dakota State up 5-0.

The Trojans made it 6-0 in the top fourth after Jay Thaler's RBI sacrifice fly to score Colman. 

Presentation's first hit did not come until the bottom sixth inning after Anthony Guzman's single.  Matt Schooler was hit-by-pitch with two outs and advanced Guzman to second base.  Josh Tabor reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Saints.

Castro hit a grand slam as Presentation trimmed Trojans' lead to 6-4 in the bottom sixth inning.

The Trojans prevented another comeback by the Saints in the bottom seventh inning with bases loaded when the game ended.  Spangler hit a double to start the bottom seventh for PC.  Drew Sanders and Guzman recorded back-to-back hit-by-pitches with no outs.

PC's Josh Youngchild hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Spangler for the second out of the bottom ninth, cutting DSU's lead to 6-5.  After Matt Schooler hit a single for another bases loaded situation for the Saints, Dakota State ended the game when Tabor hit a line out to the pitcher.

Harris and Colman each recorded three hits (a double and two singles) and scored twice for the Trojans.  Jorgensen had a home run and drove in three runs.  Thaler added a hit and an RBI.  Ratkie recorded a single.

Castro tallied a grand slam and four RBIs for the Saints.  Spangler added a double.  Schooler and Guzman each added a hit.  Youngchild registered an RBI.

DSU recorded 12 hits in the game compared to PC 4 hits.

Barker (W, 1-2) earned his first victory on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed four unearned runs on two hits.  He struck out five PC's batters.  Sternberg (S, 2) earned the save as he closed the game in the final 1 1/3 innings.  He allowed one run on two hits.

Henry Neils (L, 1-5) took the loss for the Saints.  He tossed 3 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on 11 hits.  John Giove pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief and limited DSU to one hit.

Dakota State returns home Monday afternoon for a nine-inning non-conference game versus Dordt (Iowa).  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Flynn Field in Madison, S.D.
