MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was originally scheduled to play the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball four-game series at Dickinson State (N.D.) this weekend.  However, the teams woke up Saturday morning with snow on the ground in Dickinson, N.D., forcing to move the series to Flynn Field Sunday.  Both teams played in a rare tripleheader, the second time this season that both Dakota State and Dickinson State had to play three conference games on the same day.

Despite jumping out to a 5-0 and 8-0 first-inning leads in the first two games of the tripleheader, the Trojans fell to the Blue Hawks with a late surge, losing 7-5 in game one and 14-11 10-inning affair in game two.  Dakota State salvaged the nightcap game by the score of 10-2.

Dakota State – who is playing 13 of the last 14 regular-season games at Flynn Field – improved to 13-21 overall record and 7-8 NSAA conference record after game three victory.  Dickinson State is 19-23 overall record and 6-8 NSAA.

Game 1 – Dickinson State (N.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

Jordan Hofer led off with a solo home run to open up a 1-0 lead for the Trojans in the bottom first.  DaSU followed up with three straight singles by Ian Barker, Jamie Jorgensen and Dylan Colman (RBI) to give DaSU a 2-0 lead.

Dakota State continued their scoring surge with three more runs in the bottom first.  With bases loaded and two outs, Tyler Ratkie produced a 2-RBI single to score Jorgensen and Colman.  On the same play, Richard Sternberg (who reached on base by a walk) advanced to third base and scored home after DiSU's defensive error as the Trojans' lead grew to 5-0.

The Blue Hawks answered back with four runs in the top second inning.  Jacob Hignite led off with a solo home run for DiSU's first run of the game (5-1 DaSU lead).  Chad MacKay added 2-RBI single.  He scored on DaSU's defensive miscue as the Blue Hawks trimmed Trojans' lead to 5-4 in the second inning.

Sgan Osborne hit a solo home run in the top fifth frame as Dickinson State knotted the game at 5-5.

The Blue Hawks broke the 5-5 tie into a 7-5 lead after Hignite and Jeff VanCleave hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top sixth.

Dakota State could not come back in the final inning as they left a runner on second base, securing the series opener victory for DiSU.

Hofer was 2-of-4 at the plate for the Trojans with a home run, double and an RBI.  Ratkie added two singles and two RBIs.  Colman recorded two singles, stolen base and an RBI.  Jacob Arlt registered a double.  Barker and Jorgensen each had a hit. 

Hignite hit two home runs and two RBIs for the Blue Hawks.  VanCleave and Osborne each added a home run, single and an RBI.  Jake Young had a hit and an RBI.  Jacob Cuch recorded a single.  Dylan Skabo and MacKay each swiped one base.

Both teams had nine hits in the game.  The Trojans left six runners on base, while the Blue Hawks left five runners on base.

DaSU's Taylor Boerger (L, 2-3) recorded the loss after working for six innings on the pitching mound.  He gave up seven runs (one unearned) on six hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.  Sternberg pitched in the sixth inning and allowed three hits.

Josh Schuller (W, 5-7) earned the pitching victory for the Blue Hawks.  He tossed six innings and allowed five runs (one unearned) on eight hits.  He struck out seven Trojan batters.  Sean Getchell (S, 3) notched the save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2 – Dickinson State (N.D.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 11 – FINAL/10 innings

The Trojans raced to an 8-0 lead in the opening inning of the second game.  Hofer led off with a walk, followed by Ratkie's hit-by-pitch.  Jake Harris blasted a 3-run home run – his second home run of the season – as DaSU gained a 3-0 lead.

Dakota State continued their scoring outburst with another 3-run home run in the first inning.  Jorgensen reached on base by Blue Hawks' defensive error.  Colman was hit-by-pitch and advanced Andrew Hesse (courtesy runner for Jorgensen) to second base.  Arlt hit a 3-run home run as the Trojans' lead grew to 6-0.

After Jalen Boyd reached safely on first base by DiSU's defensive error, Hofer followed up with a 2-run home run to widen Dakota State's lead to 8-0.

For the second straight game, Hignite hit a solo home run to lead off the top second inning as the Blue Hawks cut Trojans' lead to 8-1.  Dickinson State added two more runs to reduce their deficit to 8-3.

DiSU scored twice in the top third frame.  Osborne led off with a single, followed by Cuch's double to advance Osborne to third base.  Hignite produced an RBI ground out to score Osborne, followed by Tyler Czech's RBI double to score Cuch as the Trojans' lead went down to 8-5.

Jake Young hit a solo home run as Dickinson State trailed at 8-6 in the top fourth inning.

Harris reached on base by a walk with one out in the bottom fourth.  Jorgensen drilled an RBI double to score Hesse (courtesy runner for Harris) as the Trojans extended their lead to 9-6.

The Blue Hawks stormed back by producing five runs in the top sixth inning, highlighted by a pair of 2-RBI singles by Hignite and Czech for an 11-9 lead.

Dakota State mounted a comeback in the bottom seventh and final inning.  After the first two outs were recorded for the Trojans, Colman reached on base by DiSU's defensive error.  Arlt followed up with a double and advanced Colman to third base.  Tony Poncia hit a 2-RBI single to score Colman and Arlt to tie up the game at 11-11. 

The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring chances to secure the victory with two runners left on base, extending the game into extra innings.

Both teams did not score in the eighth and ninth innings.

Dickinson State scored three times in the top tenth inning to take a 14-11 lead.

The Trojans could not answer back in the bottom tenth frame with bases loaded as the Blue Hawks held on to the victory.

Arlt was 2-of-3 at the plate, with a home run, double, single and tallied three RBIs for Dakota State.  Hofer added a home run and two RBIs.  Harris had a home run and three RBIs.  Jorgensen recorded a double and an RBI.  Poncia collected a single and two RBIs.  Garrett Mullins had a hit.

Hignite had a home run, single and tallied four RBIs for Dickinson State.  Czech added a double, two singles and recorded four RBIs.  Osborne and Cuch each had two hits.  Young had a home run and an RBI.  Skabo added a single.

DiSU outhit DaSU 15-7 in the game.  The Trojans committed five defensive errors compared to the Blue Hawks three defensive errors.

Jorgensen started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State, going for 1 1/3 innings.  He gave up three runs (one unearned) on five hits.  Bardy Wauer came in for 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing three runs on five hits.  Sternberg worked for 1 1/3 innings of relief (giving up two runs on one hit).  Tyler Pruszynski tossed for two outs, allowing three runs on two hits.  Trevor Pitsor pitched a scoreless seventh inning.  Barker (L, 1-3) recorded the loss as he tossed three innings, allowing three runs (two unearned) on two hits.

Tony Roberts pitched in the first inning where he gave up eight runs (three unearned) on three hits for Dickinson State.  Jason Thibault tossed five innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits.  Sean Getchell pitched for two innings, giving up two runs (one unearned) on two hits.  Taylor Dantini (W, 1-0) recorded the victory after tossing 1 2/3 scoreless inning.  Travis Rowe (S, 1) earned the save after he recorded the final out of the game.
