DSU TROJAN MEN'S BASKETBALL RECORD BOOK

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.), which earned back-to-back North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) regular-season and postseason titles for the first time in men's basketball program history, has set two new records in the Trojan men's basketball record book.  In addition, DSU have numerous school records set in the 'Top 10'.

Dakota State has set the new school record for the longest consecutive winning streak with nine straight victories, which fueled the Trojans to their conference regular-season and postseason titles in 2016.  All of their nine consecutive victories occurred during the month of February, starting on Feb. 3 with an 85-77 victory at Jamestown (N.D.) and continuing through the NSAA Postseason Championship game with a 79-65 win over UJ at DSU Fieldhouse on Feb. 29.

The winning streak came to an end when the Trojans fell short to eventual national runner-up and then-ranked No. 1 Saint Francis (Ind.) in the opening round of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament on March 9.  It was the fourth time in the last five years that Dakota State qualified for the national tournament (also won four conference tournament titles in the last five years).

The previous old school record for most consecutive wins was eight straight victories set in 1990-91.

DSU finished their 2015-16 campaign with an overall record of 19-14 and 10-4 record in the NSAA conference.  The Trojans' 19 victories are the fourth-most wins in a single season in the record book, recording double-digits victories for the seventh straight year.  In addition, DSU's 10 conference victories are the most since 2004-05 when the Trojans earned 12 conference wins in the former Dakota Athletic Conference.

Dakota State set a new DSU record for most 3-point field goals made in a single-season with 255, breaking the previous old record of 237 total 3-pointers made in 2014-15.  Four different Trojans had drained at least 54 3-pointers this season, led by Tanner Heiser with 63 3-pointers made.

Heiser, 2016 NSAA All-Conference Second-Team, tallied a total of 143 assists in 2015-16 season.  His 143 assists is the eighth-most assists in a single season in the DSU men's basketball record book.  He had a season-high 14 assists – third-most assists in a single game – versus Valley City State (N.D.) on Feb. 13.

DSU was second in the single-season record in the following categories:  most 3-point field goal attempts (687), most assists (552), most field goals made (991), most field goal attempts (2,075) and most points scored (2,619).  As a team, the Trojans are sixth-best in single-season field goal percentage of 47.8 percent (991-of-2075 field goals).

As a team, Dakota State is fourth in season assists average with 16.7 assists per game and sixth in total teals with 234 steals.

DSU is ninth for most rebounding average in a single season.  The Trojans averaged 36.6 rebounds per game in 2015-16.

Derek Meger is second for best career field goal percentage in his two-era with Dakota State.  He made 280 field goals in 461 attempts for a percentage of 60.7 percent.  He shot 162-of-261 (62.1 percent) in his senior year and 118-of-200 (59 percent) in his junior season.

Also in the career record book, Adam Hofer is fifth in both assists and 3-point field goals made.  He racked up a total of 267 assists during his career at DSU.  He drained a total of 131 career 3-pointers.  Hofer is tied for seventh in career steals with 95.

Taylor Zirbel registered 45 career blocked shots from 2013-16 for the Trojans, which is the fifth most career blocked shots in the DSU men's basketball record book.  He also tied the DSU single-game record for best field goal percentage with 100 percent, where he holds the most field goals made and attempts (11-of-11 versus Oak Hills, Minn. in Aberdeen, S.D. on Nov. 6).  Four other Trojans were 10-of-10 from the field in the record book with the most recent in 2012-13.

Kyle Kilgore – 2015-16 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball All-America Second Team – pulled down a total of 277 rebounds for the Trojans, which is the seventh-most rebounds in a single-season in the record book.  He is also ninth in the single-season record book for most blocks with 26.

Kilgore tied the ninth most field goals made in a single game with 14 field goals in Trojans' victory at Jamestown on Feb. 3.  He led the NSAA conference with 13 double-doubles.

Brendon Boomsma is currently fourth in the Trojan men's basketball record book in career 3-point field goal percentage.  He is 41 percent from the 3-point arc (84-of-205) since the 2014-15 season.  Another Trojan player is listed in the career 3-point field goals is Ian Barse.  He is ninth in career 3-point field goal percentage of 36.2 percent and 10th in career 3-point field goals made with 96.

DSU men's basketball head coach Gary Garner increased his wins totals to 120 victories, the second most coaching wins by a Trojan men's basketball head coach in program history.  Garner earned his third Coach-of-Year honor as Dakota State men's basketball coach, where he received his first North Star Athletic Association Coach-of-the-Year recognition last February.
