MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) continued their baseball nine-game home stand Tuesday afternoon versus in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.).  The Lancers extended their winning streak to seven games after a 6-3 game one victory, but the Trojans halted MMC's winning streak after a 5-2 game two victory.  Both teams split their six-game season series.

Dakota State improved to 14-22 overall record after the nightcap victory.  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, is 18-21 overall record.

Game 1 – Mount Marty (S.D.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

The Trojans opened up with a one-run lead in the first inning.  Jordan Hofer led off DSU with a walk.  Tony Poncia was hit-by-pitch and advanced Hofer to second base.  Hofer went to third base after Jake Harris' fly ball to deep right-center.

Jacob Arlt produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hofer for Trojans' 1-0 lead in the bottom first frame.

MMC got on board with three runs in the top second inning.  Bo Howard started the inning with a walk.  Trevor Jutting hit a single with one out to advance Howard to second.  Pat Mulvaney added another single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Lancers.

Austin White recorded a 2-RBI single to score Howard and Jutting to give Mount Marty a 2-1 lead in the top second.  Caden Skinner reached safely on first base by DSU's defensive error, allowing Mulvaney to score home for Lancers 3-1 lead.

Mount Marty added a run in the top fourth inning.  Ethan Lynn and Jutting led off with back-to-back singles.  Skinner produced an RBI single with two outs to score Lynn as MMC's lead grew to 4-1.

Dakota State responded back with two runs in the bottom fourth frame, highlighted by Garrett Mullins' double.  Jamie Jorgensen reached on base by MMC's defensive miscue, followed by Mullins' double to deep right-center and advanced Jorgensen to third base. 

Both Jorgensen and Mullins scored a run after the Lancers committed a pair of wild pitches as DSU trailed 4-3 in the bottom fourth.

The Lancers added two runs in the top sixth inning.  Mulvaney reached first by base-on-balls with one out.  White followed up with a single and advanced Mulvaney to second base.  Skinner hit an RBI single to score Mulvaney for MMC 5-3 lead. 

Mount Marty made it 6-3 after DSU committed a defensive error to allow White to score.

DSU went 1-2-3 in the final inning as the Lancers secured their seven consecutive victory.

Mullins led the Trojans with a double.  Poncia added a single.  Hofer, Jorgensen and Mullins each scored once.  Hofer and Poncia each recorded a walk.

White and Skinner each had two singles and two RBIs for the Lancers.  Jutting added two singles.  Brandon Kemp, Lynn and Mulvaney each tallied a hit.  Mulvaney scored two times.  Howard and Mulvaney each reached on base by a walk twice.

MMC outhit DSU 9-2 in the game. 

Brady Wauer (L, 1-4) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU.  He tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on nine hits.  Trevor Pitsor worked for two outs in the sixth inning.  Luke Gassman tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

MMC's Hunter Hallock (W, 2-0) earned the victory after working for four innings.  He gave up three runs (two unearned) on one hit.  Brody Ries pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings, limiting the Trojans to one hit.  Dustin Haffeman (S, 1) earned the save as he tossed a shutout seventh inning.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Mount Marty (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings in the nightcap.

Arlt led off with a single for Dakota State in the bottom fourth inning.  Ian Barker blasted a 2-run home run over the left field on a 2-1 count and 2 outs, giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead.

Mount Marty answered with a run scored in the top fifth frame.  Hallock and Travis Neumann hit back-to-back doubles to produce a run, trimming DSU's lead to 2-1.

Dakota State added three more runs in the bottom sixth.  Jorgensen reached to second base after the Lancers recorded a defensive error.  Shiquing Santana followed up with a single and advanced Jorgensen to third base.  Barker smashed another home run, a 3-run home run over the right fence on a 0-1 fence to extend DSU's lead to 5-2.

MMC left a runner on second base after Mason Kaitfors double with two outs, sealing the victory for the Trojans.

Barker was 3-of-3 at the plate, with season-highs of two home runs and drove in five runs for Dakota State.  He had five home runs this season, extending his home runs totals to 14 home runs during his career at DSU.  Poncia, Arlt, Santana and Jalen Boyd each added a single.  Boyd swiped one base. 

Kaitfors tallied a double and single for Mount Marty.  Skyler Cary added two singles.  Howard, Hallock and Neumann each registered a double.  Hallock had an RBI.

Both teams had seven hits in the game. 

Richard Sternberg (W, 2-3) earned the victory on the pitching mound for DSU.  He pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits.  Tyler Pruszynski (S, 6) earned his sixth save of the season after tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

Derek Miller started the game for MMC.  He worked for four innings and allowed two runs on four hits.  Evan Steiner (L, 0-2) recorded the loss in relief.  He pitched two innings and gave up three runs on three hits.

Dakota State swings back in the North Star Athletic Association conference action this weekend as they continue their nine-game home stand.  The Trojans host Viterbo (Wis.) in a four-game series, starting on Saturday with a doubleheader.  First game is set for 1 p.m. at Flynn Field as part of Senior Day.
