MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) blasted a combined eight home runs Saturday afternoon in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Basketball doubleheader sweep over Viterbo (Wis.) as part of Senior Day at Flynn Field.  The Trojans kicked off the four-game series with a 15-6 game one victory and rallied back for a 9-6 game two victory.

DSU earned their fourth win in the last five games, raising their overall record to 16-22 and 9-8 NSAA conference record.  VU fell to 10-28 overall record and 6-12 NSAA conference record.

Both teams close out the four-game series Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m., concluding DSU's nine-game home stand at Flynn Field.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 15, Viterbo (Wis.) 6 – FINAL

The Trojans earned the first lead of the nine-inning game in the opening inning.  Jordan Hofer led off with a double to deep center.  Tony Poncia followed up with a single and advanced Hofer to third base.  Jake Harris recorded an RBI to score Hofer to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

Dakota State made it 2-0 in the bottom fourth frame after Ian Barker smashed a solo home run over the left field fence.

DSU scored another run in the bottom fifth inning.  Tyler Ratkie started the inning with a double to deep left-center.  He advanced to third base after VU's wild pitch.  Harris produced an RBI single to score Ratkie to extend Trojans' lead to 3-0.

The V-Hawks ended their scoring drought in the top sixth inning, leading off with back-to-back doubles by Angel Ramos and Brandon Alvarez (DSU leads 3-1).  Alvarez advanced to third base after Mannie De La Rosa's ground out.  Mark Strazzeri recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Alvarez as VU cut Trojans' lead to 3-2.

Dakota State exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Jacob Arlt and Jamie Jorgensen led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  Travis Fleming – pinch hitter for Jose Lopez – hit a fielder's choice as Arlt was forced out at third base. 

Ratkie followed up with a 2-RBI double to deep left-center, scoring Jorgensen and Lopez (re-entered back in the game) to expand DSU's lead to 5-2.  Jordan Hofer reached on base by an intentional walk.

Poncia hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation with two outs for Dakota State.  Harris blasted a grand slam over the right field fence on the first pitch as the Trojans' lead grew to 9-2.

Viterbo plated three runs in the top seventh inning.  Noah Bouley was hit-by-pitch.  Adam Lowe recorded a single to left-center and advanced Bouley to third base with one out.  Ramos hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Bouley as VU reduced their deficit to 9-3.

Alvarez and De La Rosa hit back-to-back RBI double as Viterbo trailed 9-5 in the top seventh frame.

The V-Hawks added a run in the top eighth inning after Brent Stoughtenger's RBI fielder's choice (DSU leads 9-6).

Dakota State exploded for another six-run inning in the bottom eighth inning to increase their lead by nine runs, thanks to four home runs by the Trojans.  Hofer led off with a solo home run – his fifth home run of the season – for DSU's 10-6 lead.

Poncia continued the Trojans' scoring surge as he reached on base by a walk.  Harris drilled an RBI double to score Ponica to extend DSU's lead to 11-6. 

The Trojans went on to hit three straight home runs as they stormed to a 15-6 lead.  Barker hit a 2-run home run over the right field fence, followed by Arlt's solo home run (his third home run on the season) and Jorgensen's solo home run (his second home run of the season).

The V-Hawks left one runner on base in the final inning as DSU sealed the series' opener victory.

Dakota State recorded a game-high six home runs.  Barker had two home runs, while Harris, Jorgensen, Hofer and Arlt each recorded a home run.

Both Harris and Barker each went 3-of-5 at the plate for the Trojans.  Each had a double and a single.  Harris drove in six runs while Barker collected three RBIs.  Ratkie added two doubles and produced two RBIs.  Hofer had a double, single and an RBI.  Arlt had three hits in the game and recorded an RBI.  Jorgensen added two hits and an RBI.  Garrett Mullins and Dylan Colman each had a single.

Alvarez went 3-of-5 with two doubles, a single and earned two RBIs for the V-Hawks.  Ramos added two singles and an RBI.  Cody Fisher and Bouley each recorded two hits.  Adam Lowe had a single.  Strazzeri and Stoughtenger each tallied an RBI.

Dakota State pound out a season-high 19 hits in the game (DSU's 15 runs was also a season-high).  Viterbo had 12 hits in the game.  VU left 10 runners on base while DSU had 7 runners left on base.

Taylor Boerger (W, 3-3) earned the victory on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He pitched six innings and gave up two runs on six hits.  Richard Sternberg worked for two innings in relief, allowing four runs on five hits.  Trevor Pitsor closed out the ninth inning and gave up a hit.

Colton Andresen (L, 0-2) recorded the loss for the V-Hawks.  He tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits.  Wyatt Cook pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on two hits.  Mike Misrasi pitched in the bottom eight inning and allowed three runs on three hits.  Willie Mancini closed out the eighth inning after giving up three runs on three hits.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Viterbo (Wis.) 6 – FINAL

Trailing 6-5 heading in the bottom sixth inning of the second game, the Trojans stormed back by scoring four runs and held off the V-Hawks 9-6 to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Dakota State quickly grabbed an early lead in the opening inning.  Hofer led off with a walk, followed by Poncia's RBI-double to score Hofer for DSU's 1-0 lead (Ponica was out advancing to third base on the same play).

On the next batter, Harris blasted a solo home run over the right field fence to extend DSU's lead to 2-0.  It was Harris' second home run of the day and his fourth home run on the season.

The V-Hawks answered back with two runs in the top third inning.  Lowe hit a single with one out.  Ramos hit a 2-run home run over center field fence as Viterbo knotted the game at 2-2.

DSU plated three runs to break a 2-2 tie into a three-run lead in the bottom third frame.  Poncia hit a single with one out.  Harris followed up with a single to advance Poncia to second base.  Barker recorded base-on-balls to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.

Arlt produced an RBI single to score Ponica, while Harris was able to score on the same play caused by VU's misplayed grounder as DSU's lead went up to 4-2 (Barker advanced to third).  The Trojans made it 5-2 after Mullins' 2-out RBI single to score Barker.

Ramos reached on base by a walk in the top fifth finning for Viterbo.  Alvarez hit a double down the left field line to advance Ramos to third base.  De La Rosa recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ramos as VU trailed 5-3.

Viterbo scored twice after the first two outs were recorded in the sixth inning.  Vince Lozano hit a single, followed by Bouley reached on base by DSU's defensive error.  Stoughtenger hit an RBI single to score Lozano, while Bouley scored on the same play caused by another Trojans' defensive miscue to tie the game at 5-5.

The V-Hawks earned a 6-5 lead after Lowe hit an RBI single to score Dylan Bjork – pinch runner for Stoughtenger – in the top sixth inning.

The Trojans answered with four runs scored in the bottom sixth inning to regain their lead.  Shiquing Santana – pinch hitter for Lopez – led off with a single to right-center.  Santana advanced to second bae after VU's wild pitch.  Hofer reached on base by a walk.  Ponica recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Santana to third and Hofer to second base.

Dakota State tied the game at 6-6 after Harris' RBI single to score Santana.  Barker followed up with a 3-run home run blast over the center field fence as DSU overtake a 9-6 lead.  It was Barker's third home run on the day, his eight home run of the season.

Viterbo could not come back in the final inning as the Trojans ended the game in a double play.

Harris was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run and tallied two RBIs for DSU.  He scored three times in the game.  Barker added a home run and collected three RBIs.  Ponica tallied a double, single and an RBI.  Arlt earned two hits and an RBI.  Arlt and Barker each swiped one base.  Mullins had a single and an RBI.  Santana recorded a hit.  Hofer reached on base by a walk two time and scored twice.

Ramos recorded a home run and two RBIs for VU.  Alvarez added a double and single.  Lowe had two singles and an RBI.  De La Rosa and Stoughtenger each had a hit and an RBI.  Fisher and Lozano each had a single.

DSU outhit VU 11-9 in the game.  The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the V-Hawks six runners left on base.

Garrison Collier started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.  He struck out four V-Hawks' batters.  Brady Wauer worked for two outs and gave up three unearned runs on two hits.  Tyler Pruszynski (W, 2-1) earned the victory in relief as he tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, yielding two hits.

Zach Benson pitched the first 4 2/3 innings of the game for Viterbo.  He gave up five runs on eight hits.  D.J. Raasch (L, 2-1) recorded the loss after working for two outs.  He allowed four runs on three hits.  Jon Grana pitched the final two outs of the bottom sixth inning.

The Trojans honored eight seniors after the game.  They are Barker, Fleming, Luke Gassman, Harris, Jorgensen, Poncia, Pruszynski and Ratkie.
