MADISON, S.D. – Viterbo (Wis.) won the first game 8-6 in ten innings to take the third game of the North Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball conference four-game series Sunday afternoon at Flynn Field.  The Trojans overcame VU's late comeback with a walk-off RBI single by Jordan Hofer as Dakota State (S.D.) earned a 6-5 eight-inning series finale victory, taking three of four games with the V-Hawks.

Dakota State raised their overall record to 17-23 and 10-9 NSAA conference record after the victory.  The Trojans finished their nine-game home stand with a 5-4 record.  Viterbo is 11-29 overall record and 7-13 NSAA.

Game 1 – Viterbo (Wis.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL/10 innings

The Trojans quickly grabbed an early lead in the opening inning of a nine-inning game.  Tony Poncia reached on base by a walk with one out.  Jake Harris blasted a 2-run home run to give DSU a 2-0 lead. 

Ian Barker followed up with a triple deep down to right field line for DSU in the first inning, breaking the DSU school record for most career triples with seven (old previous mark was six career triples set by Danny Flahie and Chaz Palmer).  Jacob Arlt produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Barker as the Trojans extended their lead to 3-0.

The V-Hawks plated two runs in the top second inning to reduce their deficit by one run.  Adam Lowe hit a double to deep left with one out.  Mike Misrasi reached on base by a walk, followed by Mark Strazzeri's RBI single to score Lowe as VU trailed 3-1.  After Ethan Bell reached on base by a walk, Brent Stoughtenger recorded an RBI walk as Viterbo trimmed DSU's lead to 3-2.

VU tied the game at 3-3 in the top third frame after Brandon Alvarez's lead-off solo home run.

Viterbo scored twice in the top fifth inning to take their first lead of the game.  Alvarez hit a single, followed by Angel Ramos' single to advance Alvarez to third base.  Mannie De La Rosa reached on base by DSU's defensive error, allowing Alvarez to score for VU 4-3 lead.  Lowe added an RBI single to score Ramos to extend V-Hawks' lead to 5-3.

Dakota State responded back with two runs scored in the bottom fifth.  Jordan Hofer was hit-by-pitch and advanced to second base by VU's wild pitch.  Poncia flied out to right field and advanced Hofer to third base.  Harris recorded an RBI ground out to score Hofer as the Trojans trimmed V-Hawks' lead to 5-4.

Barker followed up with a solo home run as DSU knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom fifth.  It was his ninth home run of the season and his fourth home run in the series versus the V-Hawks.

Viterbo regained their lead in the top seventh inning.  Ramos and De La Rosa hit back-to-back singles with one out.  After Sam Bachmeier – pinch runner for De La Rosa – swiped to second base, Ramos scored home caused by DSU's defensive miscue for a 6-5 lead.

Harris hit a single with one out in the bottom seventh for the Trojans.  Barker drilled a double to advance Jose Lopez – courtesy runner for Harris – to third base.  Arlt recorded his second RBI sacrifice fly of the game and scored Lopez as Dakota State tied the game at 6-6.

Both teams were unable to score in the eighth and ninth innings, extending the game into extra innings.  Viterbo left runners on third and first bases in the top ninth, while Dakota State left a runner on first base.

The V-Hawks opened the tenth inning with Misrasi's hit-by-pitch.  Strazzeri followed with a single to advance Dylan Bjork – pinch runner for Misrasi – to third base (Strazzeri advanced to second base on the throw).  Bell hit a 2-RBI double to score Bjork and Austin Schlaker (courtesy runner for Strazzeri) as VU grabbed an 8-6 lead.

DSU went 1-2-3 in the bottom tenth inning as Viterbo secured the victory.

Harris went 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run, two singles and drove in three runs for the Trojans.  Barker added a home run, triple, double and an RBI.  Richard Sternberg collected two hits (double and single).  Arlt had two sacrifice flies with two RBIs.  Hofer and Shiquing Santana each added a single.  Santana swiped one base.

Ramos was 3-of-5 with a double and two singles for the V-Hawks.  Alvarez added a home run, single and recorded an RBI.  Bell had a double, single and two RBIs.  Stoughtenger and a hit and an RBI.  De La Rosa and Lowe each registered two hits and an RBI.

Viterbo outhit Dakota State 14-10 in the game.  The V-Hawks left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans seven runners left on base.

DSU recorded three double plays defensively.

Jamie Jorgensen started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He pitched seven innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on 11 hits.  Trevor Pitsor (L, 1-3) took the loss in relief after working for 2 1/3 innings.  He gave up two runs on three hits.  Luke Gassman worked the final two outs of the top tenth inning.

John Costello tossed 5 2/3 innings for Viterbo.  He allowed five runs on eight hits.  Tyler Fischer (W, 1-4) earned the victory after working for 4 1/3 innings in relief.  He gave up one run on two hits.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Viterbo (Wis.) 5 – FINAL/8 innings

Viterbo took the first lead in the series finale in the opening inning of a seven-inning game.  Noah Bouley led off the game with a single.  He swiped to second base with one out.  After Ramos reached on base by a walk, De La Rosa hit an RBI single to score Bouley for VU's 1-0 lead.

Dakota State answered back with a run scored in the bottom first frame.  Santana singled to center field with one out.  He recorded a stolen base with two outs.  Arlt followed up with an RBI single to score Santana as the Trojans knotted the game at 1-1.

Alvarez started the top third inning with a single for the V-Hawks.  He advanced to second base after Ramos' ground out.  Alvarez advanced to third base after a passed ball by the Trojans.  De La Rosa hit an RBI ground out to score Alvarez as VU earned a 2-1 lead.

DSU tied the game in the bottom fourth frame at 2-2, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Poncia and Tyler Ratkie (RBI double) with one out.  Harris – pinch hitter for Jay Thaler – smashed a 2-run home run as the Trojans take their first lead at 4-2.  It was Harris' sixth home run of the season, hitting a home run in each of the four-game series versus Viterbo.

Dakota State added a run in the bottom fifth inning.  Barker led off with a single.  Lopez (courtesy runner for Barker) advanced to second base by VU's wild pitch.  Arlt reached first base by base-on-balls.  Dylan Colman hit a single to set up a bass loaded situation.  Poncia produced an RBI single to score Lopez with one out to extend DSU's lead to 5-2.

The V-Hawks mounted a comeback in the final inning, scoring three runs to tie the game.  Bell reached safely to second base after DSU's wild pitch on dropped third strike.  Stoughtenger followed up with a single and advanced Bell to third base.  Alvarez hit a 3-run home run as VU knotted the game at 5-5.

The Trojans went 1-2-3 in the bottom seventh inning, extending the game into extra innings for the second straight game.

Viterbo did not score in the top eighth inning as Dakota State ended with a double play defensively.

Poncia and Ratkie recorded back-to-back hit-by-pitch to start the bottom eighth inning for the Trojans.  Thaler reached safely on first base after a bunt single to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs.  Hofer hit a walk-off RBI single to score Jalen Boyd (pinch runner for Poncia) as the Trojans earned a thrilling victory.

Poncia and Arlt each had a double, single and an RBI for Dakota State.  Ratkie had a double and an RBI.  Hofer had a single and an RBI.  Barker tallied two singles.  Harris had a home run and two RBIs.  Santana, Thaler, Colman and Jorgensen each recorded a hit.  Santana swiped two bases.

Alvarez went 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run, single and registered three RBIs for Viterbo.  De La Rosa added two singles and two RBIs.  Lowe, Bell, Stoughtenger and Bouley each recorded a hit.  Bouley and Bell each had a stolen base.

DSU pound out 13 hits in the game compared to VU 8 hits.  The Trojans left ten runners on base while the V-Hawks had five runners left on base.

Dakota State produced two double plays in the game.  Viterbo recorded one double play.

Barker earned a no decision on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He pitched seven innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.  He struck out five VU's batters.  Tyler Pruszynski (W, 3-1) earned the victory after tossing a scoreless eighth inning.

Brian McGill started the game for the V-Hawks, going 3 1/3 innings.  He gave up four runs on eight hits.  Ryan Boelk worked for one inning in relief, allowing one run on three hits.  Jon Grana (L, 0-4) recorded the loss after allowing the winning run after tossing 2 2/3 innings.  D.J. Raasch came in the bottom eighth inning, giving up two hits.

Dakota State plays their final non-conference game of the season Wednesday afternoon as they visit NCAA Division I South Dakota State.  First pitch for a nine-inning game is set for 3 p.m. at Erv Huether Field in Brookings, S.D.  The Trojans then return home for their final regular-season games, hosting Waldorf (Iowa) in a four-game NSAA conference series.

Viterbo returns home for their final six regular-season games in La Crosse, Wis.  The V-Hawks host Mount Mercy (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.  VU welcomes Winnipeg (Manitoba) for a four-game series in the final weekend of NSAA conference play.
