BROOKINGS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) had a 3-1 lead Tuesday afternoon in their final non-conference regular-season game at Erv Huether Field versus NCAA Division I South Dakota State.  The Jackrabbits scored each of the first four innings and went on to defeat the Trojans 12-6.

Dakota State fell to 17-24 overall record on the season.  South Dakota State improved to 16-24 overall record.

The Jackrabbits opened up with a 1-0 lead in the bottom first.  Luke Ringhofer produced an RBI single to score Anthony Schneider, who reached on base by a fielder's choice and swiped to second base.

The Trojans took advantage of SDSU's four defensive errors in the top second frame, plating three runs for a 3-1 lead.  Ian Barker reached safely on first base by an error committed by the Jackrabbits.  Jacob Arlt followed up with a walk.  Jamie Jorgensen hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Barker and Arlt one base. 

Tony Poncia reached on base by another SDSU error, recording an RBI to score Barker and allowed Arlt to score for DSU's 2-1 lead in the top second.  The Jackrabbits committed another error when Andrew Hesse reached safely to first and advanced Poncia to third and Hesse to second base with another error by South Dakota State.

Tyler Ratkie hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ponica as Dakota State extended their lead to 3-1 in the top second inning.  The Trojans recorded just one hit in the inning with Jordan Hofer's single.  DSU was unable to continue their scoring surge as they left bases loaded.

SDSU answered back in the bottom second inning with four runs scored, regaining their lead at 5-3.  The Jackrabbits added another run in the third inning for a 6-3 lead.

South Dakota State produced another four-run inning in the fourth inning as their lead grew to 10-3, highlighted by Ringhofer's two-run double.

DSU cracked back in the scoring column in the top sixth inning after scoring three runs.  The Trojans hit three straight hits with one out, starting with Hofer and Shiquing Santana with back-to-back singles.  Dylan Colman produced an RBI single to score Hofer as Dakota State trimmed SDSU's lead down to 10-4.

Brad Frandsen reached first after base-on-balls to set up bases loaded situation in the top sixth for DSU.  Garrett Mullins and Zach Sutera produced back-to-back RBI singles as the Trojans cut their deficit to 10-6.

Newt Johnson hit a 2-RBI single as SDSU expanded their lead to 12-6 in the bottom seventh.

Dakota State left one runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for South Dakota State.

Hofer and Colman each registered two singles and scored once for the Trojans.  Santana and Arlt each added a hit and a run scored.  Mullins produced a single and an RBI.  Poncia scored once and recorded an RBI.  Ratkie collected an RBI and a walk.  Brad Frandsen reached on base by a walk two times. 

Ringhofer went 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and drove in three runs for the Jackrabbits.  Phil Velez, Matt Johnson and Skyler Wenniger each added two singles.  Newt Johnson had a single and two RBIs.  Cody Sharrow, Tony Kjolsing and Josh Kunzmann each added a single.

SDSU outhit DSU 12-8 in the game.  The Jackrabbits committed five defensive errors compared to the Trojans four defensive error.  Dakota State left 12 runners on base, while South Dakota State had seven runners left on base.

Richard Sternberg (L, 2-4) took the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He pitched the first two innings and gave up five runs (two unearned) on four hits.  Garrison Collier tossed the third inning and yielded one run on two hits.  Brady Wauer worked the fourth inning, allowing four runs (two unearned) on four hits.  Luke Gassman pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up two runs on two hits, while recording two strikeouts.  David Kirby worked for 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Joe Erickson (W, 2-0) earned the victory after tossing two innings the Jackrabbits.  He gave up three unearned runs on one hit.  SDSU used six different pitchers in relief.

Dakota State swings back in the North Star Athletic Association conference action this weekend, play their final four-game conference series.  The Trojans host Waldorf (Iowa) at Flynn Field in Madison, S.D. with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and another doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m.
