FOREST CITY, Iowa – Waldorf (Iowa) won the battle of pitchers' duel in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball four-game series at Forest City High School Baseball Field Friday afternoon.  The Warriors held on to 2-1 victory over the Trojans in the first game.  DSU answered back in the second game with a late surge, plating seven runs in the last two innings for a 7-1 victory to earn a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 18-25 overall record and 11-10 NSAA conference record.  Waldorf is 17-29 overall record and 13-9 NSAA conference record.

Both teams conclude their NSAA conference season Sunday with another doubleheader at Flynn Field in Madison, S.D.  The first game is set for 2 p.m.

Game 1 – Waldorf (Iowa) 2, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

In the first game of the doubleheader (nine-inning game), DSU was unable to convert their scoring chances in the top third inning with runners left on third and second bases after Jamie Jorgensen's double and Tyler Ratkie's single.

The Warriors scored its first runs of the game with two runs in the bottom fifth inning.  Jacob Tedesco led off with a single.  Kellan Mick followed up with a walk and advanced Tedesco to second base.  Ryan Villarrel recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Tedesco and Mick one base.  Garrett Gillen produced a 2-RBI single to score Tedesco and Mick to give WU 2-0 lead.

Dakota State ended their scoreless drought in the top eighth inning.  Tony Poncia reached on base by a walk.  He advanced to second base after WU's wild pitch.  Jake Harris also reached on base by a walk.  Ian Barker reached on a fielder's choice, but the Warriors committed a defensive miscue to allow Poncia to score as the Trojans cut Waldorf's lead to 2-1.

DSU went 1-2-3 in the final inning as Waldorf sealed the victory.

Jorgensen went 3-of-4 at the plate with two doubles and a single for Dakota State.  Poncia, Ratkie and Harris each added a single.  Poncia reached on base by a walk two times.  Jordan Hofer, Harris and barker each added a walk.

Gillen collected a single and two RBIs for Waldorf.  He swiped one base.  Michael Keeran added two singles.  Tedesco had a hit and a run scored.

DSU tallied six hits in the game.  Waldorf, who leads the NSAA conference in hits' category (246 hits in 20 conference games – 12.3 hits per game in NSAA conference games), was held to four hits in the game.

The Warriors recorded two double plays, defensively.  The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the WU five runners left on base.

Taylor Boerger (L, 3-4) took the loss despite tossing a complete game for Dakota State.  He allowed two runs on four hits.  He struck out four WU's batters.

Dave Erickson (W, 1-3) earned the victory after pitching eight innings for Waldorf.  He gave up one unearned runs on six hits.  He recorded four strikeouts and gave up five walks.  Trevor Bauer (S, 4) notched the save after tossing a shutout ninth inning.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Waldorf (Iowa) 1 – FINAL

Dakota State used a late offensive outburst in the nightcap, scoring a combined seven runs in the last two innings to earn a 7-1 victory over Waldorf.

The Warriors took the first lead of the game in the bottom third frame.  Michael Keeran hit a single with two outs.  Jimmy Quirk added a single and advanced Michael Keeran to third base.  He stole for home to give WU a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans got on board in the top sixth inning with five runs.  Barker hit a double to right field.  Jacob Arlt reached on base by base-on-balls.  Jorgensen added a single to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Shiquing Santana hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Barker as Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the top sixth.  Dylan Colman was hit-by-pitch as the Trojans set up a bases loaded situation for the second time.

Ratkie drove in two runs as he hit a single, scoring Jorgensen and Arlt to give DSU a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning.  On the same play, Ratkie and Colman each advance one base after WU's defensive error.

Dakota State continued its scoring surge as Hofer hit a 2-RBI single to score Ratkie and Colman, extending their lead to 5-1 in the top sixth frame.

The Trojans plated two more runs in the top seventh inning as their lead grew to 7-1.  Harris hit a single, followed by Barker's double to advance Harris to third base.  Jorgensen smashed a 2-RBI double – his third double on the day – to score Harris and Barker to expand DSU's lead by six runs.

Waldorf left one runner on base when the game ended, thanks to DSU's double play by Ratkie, Santana and Arlt to secure the victory for Dakota State.

Jorgensen and Hofer each collected a double, single and drove in two runs for DSU.  Barker added two doubles.  Ratkie had a single and produced two RBIs.  Harris recorded a hit.  Santana tallied an RBI. 

Bruce Mau, Mitchell Keeran, Michael Keeran, Quirk, Villarrel and Tim Pasiuk each had a single for WU.

The Trojans outhit the Warriors 8-6 in the game.  Both teams left seven runners on base.

Garrison Collier (W, 3-1) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He allowed one run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.  Collier recorded a career-high nine strikeouts.  Richard Sternberg closed the game by recording the last two outs of the game.

Adam Kovash (L, 3-5) took the loss for Waldorf.  He pitched six innings and gave up five runs on five hits.  Tony Manna tossed the seventh inning in relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
