MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned back at Flynn Field Sunday afternoon for their North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference regular-season doubleheader finale versus Waldorf (Iowa).  The Trojans closed out their regular-season by holding the Warriors to one run in each game, posting scores of 7-1 and 3-1 victories.  

DSU took the final three games of the NSAA's four-game series finale with WU, earning a doubleheader split in Forest City, Iowa Friday afternoon.  The Trojans held the Warriors to one run in the last three games.  DSU outscored WU 18-5 in the four-game series.

Dakota State raised their overall record to 20-25 and 13-10 NSAA conference record (third-place in the NSAA conference standings).  Waldorf, who is in their first year member with the NSAA conference, finished their regular-season schedule with an overall record of 17-31 and 13-11 NSAA record.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Waldorf (Iowa) 1 – FINAL

After back-to-back walks by Jacob Tedesco and Kellan Mick in the top second frame of the nine-inning game, Ryan Villarreal hit an RBI single to score Tedesco to give Waldorf a 1-0 lead.

Dakota State scored once in the bottom third inning to knot the game.  Tony Poncia hit a single with one out.  Ian Barker reached on base caused by WU's defensive miscue and advanced Poncia to second base.  Jacob Arlt followed up with an RBI single to score Ponica as DSU tied the game at 1-1.

Tyler Ratkie reached on base by base-on-balls after WU recorded a double play in the bottom fourth inning.  Jordan Hofer drilled an RBI double to deep down the right field line, scoring Ratkie for DSU's 2-1 lead.

The Trojans added three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Shiquing Santana was reached on base after a fielder's choice.  Dylan Colman followed up with a hit-and-run play for DSU, recording an RBI double to score Santana to extend Dakota State's lead to 3-1.

DSU made it 5-1 after Hofer followed up with a 2-run home run over the right field fence in the bottom sixth.  It was his sixth home run of the season for the Trojans.

Dakota State scored two more runs in the bottom seventh inning.  Barker reached on base by WU's defensive error.  Arlt followed up with a single and advanced Jose Lopez – courtesy runner for Barker – to second base.  After Jamie Jorgensen's sacrifice bunt to advance Lopez to third and Arlt to second base, Santana hit an RBI single to score Lopez.  On the same play, Arlt advanced to third and was able to score home after the Warriors committed an error for DSU's 7 -1 lead.

Waldorf left one runner on base when the game ended, recording back-to-back 7-1 victories for DSU (Trojans defeat Warriors 7-1 in the second game on Friday afternoon).

Hofer was 2-of-5 at the plate with a home run, double and drove in three runs for Dakota State.  Poncia also went 2-of-5 at the plate with two singles.  Arlt collected three singles and recorded an RBI.  Santana and Colman each had a hit and an RBI.  Jake Harris registered a single.

Villarreal went 2-of-3 with two singles and an RBI for Waldorf.  Tedesco and Bruce Mau each added a single.  Garrett Gillen swiped one base.

DSU outhit WU 12-4 in the game. 

Barker (W, 2-3) tossed a complete game victory on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He allowed one run on four hits and struck out a career-high seven WU batters. 

Michael Keeran (L, 4-4) recorded the loss for the Warriors.  He worked for six innings and gave up five runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.  Dean Mick pitched two innings in relief, allowing two unearned runs on two hits.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Waldorf (Iowa) 1 – FINAL

Both teams did not score in the first three innings of the second game (seven-inning game).

The Trojans strike first in the bottom fourth inning.  Arlt reached on base by Warriors' defensive error.  Jorgensen reached on base by a fielder's choice after Arlt was forced out at second base.  Santana smashed his first collegiate home run, hitting a 2-run home run over the left field fence with two outs to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

Dakota State added a run in the fifth inning.  Ratkie led off with a double.  Poncia reached on base by base-on-balls.  Harris followed up with a hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Barker produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ratkie to extend Trojans' lead to 3-0 in the bottom fifth.

Waldorf ended their scoring drought with a run scored.  The Warriors hit three straight singles by Villarreal, Ryan McCabe and Elvin Nunez with one out.  Mau hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Austin Robbins (pinch runner for Villarreal) as WU reduced DSU's lead to 3-1.

DSU secured the victory after the Warriors left runners on second and first bases to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Santana was 1-of-3 at the plate with a home run and drove in two runs for Dakota State.  Ratkie added a double and single.  Barker registered a single and an RBI.  Poncia had a hit.

Villarreal went 2-of-3 with a double and single for Waldorf.  McCabe, Nunez, Gillen and Mitchell Keeran each had a hit.  Mau collected an RBI.

WU recorded six hits in the game compared to DSU five hits.

Richard Sternberg (W, 3-4) pitched a complete game for the victory on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He allowed one run on six hits and recorded five strikeouts.

Michael Miller (L, 2-1) recorded the loss for the Warriors.  He worked for 4 1/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on five hits.  Trevor Bauer pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one run.

It was the final career home collegiate baseball games at Flynn Field for DSU's eight seniors--Barker, Travis Fleming, Luke Gassman, Harris, Jorgensen, Poncia, Tyler Pruszynski and Ratkie.

Both Dakota State and Waldorf await to hear the pairings for the upcoming NSAA Baseball Conference Postseason Tournament, which will be held in Jamestown, N.D. and Valley City, N.D.  The opening round will start on Friday afternoon.  The bracket and pairings will most likely to be announced Monday.
